Report – Newcastle Chase Prolific International Striker

There is an exclusive report in the Chronicle that Newcastle have set their sights on 20-year-old Nigerian international striker Victor Osimhen.

Like another winter target in Sevilla winger Rony Lopes, Osimhen just joined his current club, Lille, this summer. Unlike Lopes, however, Osimhen is making a significant impact with his new club.

He has already scored 8 goals in his 12 appearances for the French club who are currently 6th in the table. Lille is also the club of summer target Thiago Maia who wished to stay in France to play Champions League football at Lille.

Osimhen joined Lille for £10.8m from Belgian club RS Charleroi, who had just signed the Nigerian permanently after activating a £2.5m option to buy the striker earlier in the summer. He had been on loan in Belgium last season, where he scored 20 goals.

He had previously been at Bundesliga club Wolfsburg but failed to score in his 16 first-team appearances for the club. Newcastle played against Osimhen when he was still with Wolfsburg in a preseason friendly in August of 2017.

He was recently named the Ligue 1 September player of the month. Here is what he had to say to BBC Sport about the award:

“It’s been an amazing time at this club and to get this award is surreal,” Osimhen told BBC Sport.

“I’m grateful to those who voted, thankful to my teammates, our backroom staff and the entire Lille fans for the love.

“I never expected this to happen so soon but I guess this is what comes when you are surrounded by great players, loved ones and the blessings of God.”

Whether the 20-year-old can make the jump up to the Premier League is an unknown. Lille will also not want to sell their newly acquired striker, so his fee is likely to be quite high.

However, he is one to watch and certainly has an eye for goal. He’ll be 21 when January rolls around. With Newcastle looking anemic in front of goal, we expect the club to be scouting quite a few strikers over the next few months.

    How much !!!!!!

“Mike says need change from £5 million”

Let’s hope we are still close to 4th bottom by the time January is here.

Really concerned at our lack of goalscorers.

Nufc 83 – The switch to back 4 wasnt the problem it was midfield having non mobile players such as Shelvey and utter crap like Krafth playing. No coincidence Krafth played vs Norwich and Leicester our heaviest defeats. Also Bruce set team up as playing deep. He needs to play high line with all our players aggressively pressing where when we win ball back we should be automatically near opposition goal. This current set up wont get us many if any goals. We didn’t create anything yesterday and i didn’t think Chelsea were that special performance wise hence we should have created more. We are just a poor defensively set up team that just hopes we get a goal. ASM our best player in terms of making things happen but once opposition see that and mark him tight and close him down quicker we are doomed

I’ve given up on a super rich buyer! I’ll settle for anyone other than Ashley with even modest ambition for the club. He has no interest in the club, the city nor the fans!

Tom it was sarcasm pal, lol I’ve said on here before I wouldn’t want to be bought by a company who are scraping the bare minimum of funds together, that would spell complete disaster. Although I think were probably screwed anyways, I think Bruce has to be given till January but that will be far too long, he will do so much damage we wont be able to make up the points to avoid relegation.

SB is not the worst PL manager although he will never be one of the top!
In fact we’ve had at least 2 worse in McClaren and John Carver. I would argue SB is better than Pardew as well!

I don’t think we know all the stuff about Ashley. I think he’s been legally robbing us for years. The Joelinton £40 million transfer stinks of money laundering and the ridiculous 140 million loan is a joke. He bought the club then decided through incompetence he would loan us money to pay off the mortgage! He is thick but his legal team must have known about it.
So I think he is the worst we could get!

It’s easy to criticize Joelington, but how many chances did he miss? None. Even the best CFs in the world miss over 75% of their chances.

He isn’t the type of CF who’ll make his chances out of nothing, granted. But that’s an extremely rare breed. Most CFs are handed chances, they convert some.

So, how to make more chances? That’s the issue, right now. How do other teams do it?

Well, when they attack, their whole team pushes up, including CBs. Every player plays a part, there’s plurality and players are seldom isolated.

Conclusion: when we attack, don’t do it in isolated units. No matter how good m, they’ll lose the ball, with no passing options.

Does this make us vulnerable to counters? Yes and no. They won’t be camped in our half if we’re attacking, they’ll be pushed out themselves.

When we’re defending, ok, park the bus.

    Try it Bruce.

As soon as Rafa left Jabba went straight back to buying players he, or whoever hes got finding these players, can make money on
We didnt even have a manager but he already had lined up who he wanted to gamble on
Its obvious over the years its one of the ways hes made money for himself

It wont ever change till hes gone

    Drop Joelinton and start Gayle.

Gayle gets harshly judged. His record at PL level is a goal every 280mins or just over 1 in 3. This is in bottom half teams, coming in and out of the side, appearing as sub etc.

If he starts from now until the end of season, stays fit, I’m confident he could get about 10 league goals in this counterattacking set-up. Joelinton will not. His intelligent movement and running the channels is what we need. He played a similar role for us in the final 6 months of his last PL season with us

Joelinton has zero ST instinct. People say he doesn’t get service, he had ample service yesterday and failed to get shots off by making the wrong decisions, most notably when he cut back inside on the edge of the box when he had 1 defender ahead of him, all it needed was for him to advance to the right a little bit and get a shot off to the far corner.

He is always on his heels in the box and has no knack for sniffing out chances – it is as much a STs responsibility to make moves with conviction in the box as it is on wide men to find them. It’s called anticipation and by making a decisive move it demands wide players to play it in. Compare him with how Perez often got across his man or was on his toes for those scrappy moments in the box. Gayle has similar qualities.

See this is the kind of blinkered analysis I’m talking about. He had a headed chance provided by ASM, he should have done better with. The scenario I described in my previous comment was a clear chance to get a shot away and he failed. There was 2 or 3 other occasions after good work by ASM to create a dangerous attack it broke down with Joelinton too.

Agree with Cyprus re: the Joelinton critics. Very harsh and he certainly doesn’t deserve dropping.
The lad is strong, quick wins most duels with his back to goal and holds the ball up well imo. The team give him zero service from crosses/ through balls and create maybe 2 half opportunities a game for him.
I can think of two chances in last 2/3 games where his touch let him down or a header should have hit the target but aside from that how much better do people think Gayle can do with the same service? Bloody Alan in his hayday wouldn’t be scoring in this team.
