Mikel Merino’s Teammate Claims He Turned Down Summer Move To Newcastle

Mikel Merino played just one season at Newcastle. While he started well, the form of Mohammed Diame limited the midfielder to only three starts in the second half of that campaign.

Real Sociedad activated the Spaniard’s release clause the following summer, and Newcastle were powerless to prevent his departure.

The move proved to be a good one for Merino as he is a vital member of Real Sociedad’s squad. This season the Basque club is up in fourth place in La Liga.

One of the big reasons for Real Sociedad’s success is their Brazilian striker Willian Jose. The 27-year-old has been scoring the goals of late for his club with four so far this season. He has 49 in total in his three years at the club.

Speaking in the Spanish outlet Marca, Jose has claimed that he turned down a move to Newcastle this summer. This is what the 6’2″ striker had to say on the subject:

“The Premier is the best championship in the world, but La Liga is not far behind. For me, the best team is Real Madrid and then Barcelona.

“I could be in the Premier League, but I am in the right place.

“I want to play one day in the Premier League, but now I am happy here. I had an option to go to Newcastle last year, I’m happy at Real Sociedad, and I ended up staying.”

Newcastle were linked with a move for Jose a few seasons ago but nothing ever materialized. With the player turning 28 next month, he would have been on the fringes of Newcastle’s transfer policy.

It would be interesting to find out what size the bid was for the Brazilian as it would likely have taken more than the Joelinton fee to have brought him in.

Newcastle are unlikely to make another move for the player if his claims are valid. Jose would probably not change his mind on Newcastle now with Real Sociedad flying high in La Liga.

Dunno, I think he’s had starts and games as a sub but not sure how close he is to the 1st team yet.

the trouble with almiron, joelinton, and maximin is that they are all the same type of player. the speedy dribbler type that causes havoc and creates space in a cat amongst the pigeons way. similar to kieran dyer who was useful, but you wouldnt want 3 kieran dyers in the same team as you’d never score any goals. atsu is also this type of player as is murphy. i’d swap all of them for ben arfa in his prime, maybe even as he is now. i feel our scouts/ board believe if they get a fast exciting type they could rocket up to £100m. but these fast types rarely go on to become a messi, ronaldo, hazard, bale. they mostly go on to become a tony daley and fade away by mid/ late twenties. i really rate 2 of the three players i mentioned, but truthfully we should have only signed one of them. harry wilson, che adams, and bowen should have been signed alongside one of the above. but ashley seemingly refuses to pay over 15m for a championship player but is willing to pay 30+ from the low quality top leagues of europe on players who might not even adapt to the country or physical nature of the english game. conversely he won’t take a risk on a high performing manager from the european leagues, preferring any old failure who has experience of england. he should have these preferences the other way round and we’d be flying.

I don’t agree with this policy that has seen us bring in older youths released from teams like Everton, Celtic, Man City and most recently Chelsea & West Ham. Although the Chelsea rejects may be good enough, our scouting should be a bit better than let’s see who West Ham release. We should be more than a last chance saloon for unwanted players. It seems like we’re just bringing them in to make up the numbers or because they’re just good enough to stop us being relegated and then losing our 1 or 2 most talented local players.

Just checked up on Joselu and he’s scored 3 goals in 8 games for Alaves. I had a feeling he’d do OK in Spain. He had a decent scoring record in Germany too. He’s just too slow on the ball for England.

Those allegations were made when he was England manager, I think, so it’s more likely to have been about his health. Whatever the reason, utterly despicable – and illegal!

Is wor Linty Joe going to outscore Hoser Flu in his first season? I think Hoser Flu had 4 one season didn’t he? Anyway he had 6 goals in 46 total appearances for us. So more than 5 more needed from Linty Joe in the next 37 matches. And Linty Joe only cost about 30-34M pounds more than Hoser Flu!

It seems a coincidence that BZG stated they did proof of funds on the
17th March and we contacted Stam the same week.
Ashley’s legal people stated several times that the club need a manager in place
at the time of a takeover even with all parties aware that the new owners will bring
    their own guy in.
