Newcastle have been linked with quite a few center-backs in the past few months. Hellas Verona’s Koray Gunter, Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall, and Burnley’s Ben Gibson, to name a few.
While we have six currently at the club, the youngest is 25-year-old Jamaal Lascelles. Once Fabian Schar turns 28-years-old later this year, all will be that age or older except for Lascelles.
With three of our current crop looking at their contracts running out by the summer of 2021, it makes sense that Newcastle are scouting some new blood at the position.
While we feel it should be priority number one to get Fabian Schar on a new deal, that looks unlikely for 30-year-olds Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark.
One of the central defenders we really like is Preston’s Ben Davies. During the summer, Newcastle were linked with the player as one that Steve Bruce really rated from his time in the Championship.
Ben Davies– attracting interest from Premier League clubs
Earlier this month, there were reports saying that Newcastle still maintained an interest in 24-year-old.
He has put in some top performances for the Championship club this year. On Tuesday night against Leeds, he was outstanding, and the Preston fans sang his praises on Twitter after his display.
With Newcastle, Wolves, and Everton tracking their star defender, some Preston fans seem resigned to losing him after this year.
Here are what some had to say after his Leeds’ performance.
Ben Davies has got to be best centre half in the league. Pleasure to watch. #pnefc
