Before it was revealed that Andy Carroll had tweaked his groin in the Chelsea match, Bruce had spoken about the 30-year-old’s training schedule. Bruce disclosed some details about the regimen Andy was following to stay fit.
At the tail end of his comments, Bruce said the following:
“Hopefully in the next week or two weeks he will be in a position where we can start him.”
Of course, any plans to start Andy this Sunday are done with the news of his groin injury. The positive news is that it’s a very minor injury and has nothing to do with his ankle.
This is what Bruce said at his press conference about Carroll’s injury situation:
“With Andy, it’s not his ankle thankfully. Everyone can pick up those types of niggles especially when you sit on the bench for a while.
“He has stretched and over-stretched. It’s fortunate it is not his ankle. There is no one more disappointed than Andy.
“He was getting himself in a position, where the more he trained, getting on against Man United and Chelsea, he was maneuvering into a position where he could start, it’s disappointing, but we have to carry on.”
We have to wonder if Steve Bruce has any intentions of shaking up the strike force at Newcastle. With just one goal and no assists coming from the trio of Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin, and Miguel Almiron, Newcastle are in desperate need of production from the front three.
During the press conference today, Steve Bruce also talked about the lack of goals his team has produced thus far:
“But the more Saint-Maximin and Joelinton play, the better. It is one area we have to improve. We’re aware of that.
“We just have to keep working away at the training ground, but it is the hardest part of the game. I hope we have enough firepower up there, and we need to start scoring more.
“We need to start showing it as it is the one area we’re working on to do better. We have been working on it all week. We will continue to do so.
“It is easy to do it on the training ground but not so easy on a Saturday.
A few days ago, Bruce talked about Dwight Gayle and his excellent finishing in training. It’s likely been every week that Bruce has had the lads doing finishing sessions as goals have been a problem since day one.
However, Dwight Gayle has only been back for the past month and seems to be doing quite well in the training sessions.
This is what he said about Dwight after his return to action against Chelsea:
“It’s vitally important that he stays fit because he reminds me of why I have tried to buy him that many times.
“In training, I get those reminders as his finishing is excellent, excellent. I am delighted to have him.
“He’s booming around the training ground, and again he gives me another option which is good.”
Bruce also talked about Gayle today. With Carroll out of consideration, we have to wonder if Gayle could find himself in position for a start on Sunday.
This is what Bruce said to the Chronicle about the 29-year-old:
“I have made it common knowledge I have tried to sign him at least three times now.
“I have never been able to afford him.
“To see him in training in the last three weeks. So he’s knocking on the door, but I’ve got a squad to pick.
“As the eight-year-old I spoke to this week said everybody has got their opinion, let’s hope I get the right one!”
We think Bruce will just make the one forced change for Wolves with Fabian Schar being injured. He may have been mulling over bringing Carroll in recently, but his groin injury has nixed that for now.
However, Bruce has sung the praises of Dwight Gayle since he arrived at Newcastle. With only 5 goals in 9 games and Big Andy out injured, Bruce has the chance to give Dwight Gayle a massive vote of confidence on Sunday by starting him.
What Will Be The Result Against Wolves At St James Park?
- Win (43%, 494 )
- Loss (35%, 410 )
- Draw (22%, 255 )

He fits into this Leicester system amazing his little flicks are cutting teams apart and its just sickening to watch how good he is doing with them as it should really be us with pacy additions to challenge top 4 instead we are stuck with Brucey bonus hoping Wolves flights are delayed to have any chance of a point……

Comment #45I think Joelinton has to get moved wide or to play as the 2nd striker if we are to have any success with him he likes to come deep for the ball and needs someone like Gayle to make runs in behind to create space
Wouldn’t mind seeing us have :
Saint Maxim LWF
Joelinton RWF
Almiron No 10
Gayle CF
That front 4 potentially could cause a lot of damage with all of the players in their most natural positions Almiron is much better in a free role and would make sure we weren’t outnumbered in the middle as well

Comment #52Thing I like about Perez the most is his desire to get goals none of our “attackers” have that instinct or desire that can’t be coached the only one that we have that has that knack is Gayle but hes never bloody fit….
All of our players wan’t to dribble but then don’t continue the run into the box to finish

I actually think we got done for 30 million the guy has consistently been involved in a minimum of 15 goals for the last 4 seasons through scoring or assisting in our domestic league if that’s not worth 30 million what is?!
Would like to see Gayle given a good run in the team to see what he can do with the current team his pace and movement might open up space for us to be more effective hes got to stay fit though which is always the problem with him

Comment #63BBC:
Leicester are just the second team in Premier League history to establish a five-goal lead in the first half of an away game after Manchester City managed the same feat against Burnley in April 2010.

Comment #64We have the fourth worst goal difference in the league thanks to our 5 nil loss at Leicester who hopefully will now put ten past Southampton.
Sunday is not a chance but a necessity that we get three points and some goals for.

What do you mean, he featured in 35 (? I can’t remember him being in that many) games a couple of seasons ago and scored 6 goals, he didn’t score more than 7 for Palace, if it’s purely because he might be looking the best of a bad bunch then we’re totally screwed for goals.

Was talking about Perez his tally has been impressive last few seasons mostly 10 goals and lots of assists and even if you look at our goals in the last few seasons hes always involved even if he doesn’t get the final touch he either starts the move or has a little flick here and there !
Gayle for me is our best bet of any kind of attacking fluency our front 3 at the moment are far too similar they need someone ahead of them who will make piercing runs and Gayle currently is our only option to do that “best of a bad bunch” maybe but this could finally be his turn to shine in the premiership ?

Comment #74Leicester 7up…Southampton should be flamin ashamed of themselves… Bruce WON’T be the first manager to lose his post this season… Maybe second.
It bugs me.. and brobaly thousands of others also that, the manager gets the boot yet the club keeps the same playing staff.. they’re the lazy, useless so and sos who’ve got the club and manager in that position… I’ve always said, the bubble will burst in the Premier ship and players will actually gave to WORK to keep their place…… UNTIL then… Clubs will keep sacking managers for their players laziness
