Steve Bruce does not agree with Sean Longstaff’s sending off this afternoon. He also thinks that Ruben Neves should be ashamed of himself for rolling around after Sean’s tackle.
This is what Bruce said after the match as tweeted by the Chronicle’s Ciaran Kelly:
Steve Bruce felt Sean Longstaff's red was 'harsh'. "When they're [Neves] rolling around like that, you know they're not hurt because if you're hurt, you stay motionless. He's not in control of his foot but then again how he is supposed to be when he's just played ball?" #NEWWOL
— Ciaran Kelly (@CiaranKelly__) October 27, 2019
Steve Bruce also spoke to NUFC TV after the game and commented some more on Sean’s sending off:
“He’s played the ball. Yes, I understand he’s got a flailing right foot. But what is he supposed to do with it? You know it’s in the air.
“It’s a difficult one. I would expect Longstaff to make that challenge. And he’s won the ball. I think it’s very harsh.”
When asked about if Longstaff’s challenge was under similar circumstances to Isaac Hayden’s at Leicester City, Bruce had the following to say:
“You put your hands up with Isaac. Today, I’ve got to try and help the boy because I don’t think it’s a red card. Maybe in today’s world, but I think he’s been hard done by.”
Steve Bruce does not appear to just be covering for his player. He was candid when Isaac Hayden received a straight red for his challenge on Dennis Praet. This is what Steve Bruce said about Isaac’s tackle at the time.
“In today’s game, you can’t follow through and be reckless. When he looks back, he’ll know he was wrong.”
We tend to agree with Steve Bruce on this one. Isaac’s challenge was a lot more dangerous and could have seriously hurt Praet.
That was not the case with Sean’s tackle on Neves. While he did catch him high on his leg, and Sean was not in full control, the power behind the challenge was not enough to put Neves in any real threat of injury.

Comment #2Hayden went in in a fifty fifty, the other guy pulled out. In football, the weaker challenger pays the price.
In this case, it was a red. Won the ball, also, but he was way high.

Comment #3Sending off today might of been a blessing as seemed to gel the players into a team that were going to defend as one and we nearly caught them on a break- away – just need a bit more composure/ belief

Comment #10One word terrible. Why can’t we pass. We had a little spell when we got it together. Sean Longstaff not very good today. Still don’t think he’s back to what he was end of last season. Matty ok in first half. Joelinton!!! Miggy I agree saved us a few times in defence. Fernandez my man of the match. Great assist for the goal. Shelvey got o lot of stick from the the Wolves fans should have won this. Subs too late. Shelvey a great pass from defence for Gail. Depressing

Comment #20Just got back from the match,
Best players were Willems, Maxi and Almiron, Fernandez did ok but also gave the ball away quite a bit.
I’ve been patient with Joelinton but that’s it from me (and virtually everybody that sits around me in the East stand) pure garbage, no mobility, can’t beat a man, laziest player on the pitch by a mile, yeah yeah no service etc. etc. Gayle or Muto must play ahead of him.
Shelvey and Hayden for the midfield pairing against West Ham.
I said after Arsenal we were going down and nothing i’ve seen (Bar a manager change) has changed my mind.
Bruce is absolutely clueless.

Comment #27Nufc83 – I miseed this earlier but can’t let it slide – “Bleatin because shelvey is a defensive liability so why do we want him on with 10 men under the cosh? It’s not rocket science is it”.
Why would we need Shelvey to be defensive (and “liability”? Really?) If the midfield functions well enough not to be sucked into getting carded because they got desperate and outplayed ? If Shelvey was in the right shape midfield we would have needed to be much less defensive.
Not rocket science but even the simple stuff you have difficulty working right through before typing.

Comment #28What I find rather bemusing is the same people who said get over rafa that was the past etc etc, are the same people defending Bruce (and Ashley for that matter) by comparing each result Bruce achieves compared to the same result under rafa. For example rafa never beat man u or wolves.
Why don’t these people lay off the brown nosing of Bruce and wait until the end of the season and compare directly.
P.s rafa never had a 40 million player at his disposal. Just stating a fact not looking for an argument.

I thought we dominated the first half and really should’ve punished a very poor Wolves side whilst we had them allover the place, but we didn’t.
Second half we did what we seem to do in most games and switched off completely. Wolves are an ok team but that’s about as good as they are, just ok. We don’t need to try sitting back and holding onto a 1 goal lead against teams like Wolves, it’s annoying.
Not the worst result given the red card and how poor we were in that second half but it’s a game we could’ve won by half time.
Big plus for me Today was Almiron. Always looked a threat and was also our best defender (how about that). The lad will score soon if he keeps giving his all.
Joelinton is a player I actually feel very sorry for. As a former striker myself I know how difficult playing on your own is, but in our system he’s fighting an impossible battle up there. There’s definitely a good player in there but unfortunately for him, I think he joined the wrong club.
Anyway a point is a point. Up the TOON!

Still trying to measure Bruce against Rafa, ffs give it up man. Rafa didn’t have a 60M strike force but I know who I’d rather have, our last season’s player of the season and a guy who’s just scored a hat trick which he also managed to do under Rafa earlier this year. How many goals have we scored this season?
If Bruce had won as much or a fraction of what rafa has achieved then you could possibly fleetingly compare them but one bad start from Rafa in a season measured against bruce’s and Rafa’s entire respective careers is not really a stick to to keep hitting Rafa with.
Rafa was still very well organised even when we were struggling and many of us had faith he would turn things around as of course he did. No way can any right thinking person have the same confidence in bruce, a guy who was never even offered a coaching role at Manu by SAF, to turn this round when he doesn’t even know people’s right positions..
I really thought today, even under Bruce, we would win and handsomely after Wolves European exertions, but apart from the goal and almiron’s miss did we even register any other attempts at goal.
Re – Firmino, he went to a well run cub with a top coach, while Joel came to a toxic club with a very poor coach and ashley was advised not to blow 40m.

Comment #33Bleatin you have made yourself look even more of a fool there. You talk about him not needing to be defensive if we were set up correctly for Christ’s sake man we were down to 10 men and under immense pressure. How are we ever going to be set up correctly to the point in which Shelvey does not have to play defensively in the scenario? To be fair to him he done ok when he come on but that’s besides the point.

If anything the MPs should be cracking down on his Shirebrook base and company which resembles working conditions similar to a Taiwanese or asian sweat shop.
