Defender Spot On With Post-Wolves Assessment

Captain Jamaal Lascelles spoke to NUFC TV after the very disappointing draw against Wolves yesterday.

Lascelles is pitch-perfect in his assessment with the second half being a major disappointment. Newcastle just tried to hang on to a one goal lead and that never works in this league. If you invite that much constant pressure, you’re always going to find it difficult not to concede.

We don’t fault the effort from the lads as they still put in a shift. However, the mentality to just sit back and cede the game to Wolves at home is quite concerning.

The back three played well, and it was ultimately a mistake from goalkeeper Martin Dubravka that ended up being Newcastle’s undoing. But when you let a team like Wolves dictate the tempo and get their rhythm, they are generally going to find a breakthrough.

The first half was decent if not spectacular. While the first 30 minutes were a mundane affair for both sides, Newcastle came to life a bit after that. Jamaal was able to get the 1-0 lead from a superb Fede Fernandez cross.

It was some towering header by the captain. We haven’t seen too many of those lately from the 25-year-old. It was Jamaal’s first goal for Newcastle in almost two years. He last scored in January of 2018 against Burnley.

Lascelles was pleased to get on the scoresheet; however, he was more concerned that we did not get the win. This is what Jamaal said later in the interview about his goal, which was his 9th for Newcastle:

“Obviously I’m pleased that I got a goal, but it would have been better if we’d got the three points. That’s all I really care about, to be honest.”

If we are to take anything from this performance, it’s that to a man all agree that a draw at home against Wolves is a letdown. We at least don’t have to hear how this was a good point against an in-form Wolves side.

This was a match that we should be winning and but for an imprudent ultra-conservative second half, Newcastle could have gotten all three points yesterday.

Who Was Newcastle's Best Player Against Wolves?

  • Allan Saint-Maximin (35%, 345 )
  • Federico Fernandez (17%, 165 )
  • Miguel Almiron (16%, 155 )
  • Jamaal Lascelles (15%, 149 )
  • Ciaran Clark (5%, 47 )
  • Jetro Willems (4%, 43 )
  • Matty Longstaff (2%, 22 )
  • Sean Longstaff (2%, 17 )
  • Dwight Gayle (1%, 13 )
  • DeAndre Yedlin (1%, 12 )
  • Martin Dubravka (1%, 12 )
  • Jonjo Shelvey (1%, 9 )
  • Joelinton (1%, 6 )
  • Christian Atsu (0%, 1 )

I saw a comment on a previous thread that we’re ‘on target for a 37-38 point season’ (i.e. as per the club’s target to scrape over the line yet again).

The trouble is, having 9 points after 10 games means after 38 games we’d be on 34 points.

And chances are we won’t get many more fluke results like the Spurs game again this season either.

I hope we do it, somehow, but it’s impossible to imagine anything other than a continually depressing season-long struggle.

Two points from our next four games would leave us on 11 points after 14 games, which projected to 38 games would mean 30 points. 🙁

Shelvey and Hayden next game please. Don’t think either of the Longstaffs had good games today. Ok in the first half. The red card Was Sean’s fault because he played a terrible pass to Joelinton, then dived in trying to make up for it. Whether it deserved a red would have to look again. Not watching match of the day hate it now.

Atmosphere there wasn’t any at all NYmag. It was freezing cold. But a great goal. We should have won, Maxime good but when he comes to shoot, he blast’s it against a defender. then we were hanging on in the end.

NY Mag did you watch on the match on TV? The Wolves fans were in fine voice. I thought we should have beat them, we just can’t get that second goal.

I see Joelinton is getting a bit stick on here but to be fair to the lad he’s not really getting a decent service is he?

It’s funny how that goal came about, lascelles came from a long way out to connect with that cross, it’s strange that he seemed to be really angry about something (he was having several exchanges with the ref – don’t know what it was about).

The goal seemed to lift the confidence of all the players, but the second half was pretty dire.
We seemed to be hanging on in the end, of course the red card didn’t help – I don’t think there was any maliss in the tackle, but can understand why it was given.

I suppose the only consolation is that 1 point is better than none.

Bleatin you have made yourself look even more of a fool there. You talk about him not needing to be defensive if we were set up correctly for Christ’s sake man we were down to 10 men and under immense pressure. How are we ever going to be set up correctly to the point in which Shelvey does not have to play defensively in the scenario? To be fair to him he done ok when he come on but that’s besides the point”

Would you always start setting up your team properly after a red card arrived or…hmmm…let’s see…what about before you started the game now thats a novel twist. 😀

You won’t have to set up reactively if you don’t fudge a cobbled midfield out of academy promotees and ill-matched “star buys” you gladly accepted as de facto in your desperate bid for any pl gig on offer. Get some chicken down your neck and beef up because your brain isn’t going to help you out ha ha. We are always in trouble defensively because the midfield is the DMZ at our matches you clamp. 🙂

Joelinton don’t think he’s a centre forward. Would like to see him play with Andy Carroll or Dwight Gail. He struggled today. But no one near enough to him. He also looked slow today.

The thing that would worry me about our next couple of games is we might actually get pounded off West Ham or Bournemouth it could easily happen! They are far superior to us all over the pitch and have managers who will be able to change tactics which Bruce seems unable to do!

Then we have City as well…..

Thought almiron was our best player today.
Him and maxi just need to shoot first time.
Thought i was going to witness miggys first goal.

On crowd, was dead, wolves fans in good voice until goal. Then when they scored they went wild again

Thought wolves were there for the taken.
Maxi and miggy put there chances away today we win.
