Captain Jamaal Lascelles spoke to NUFC TV after the very disappointing draw against Wolves yesterday.

Lascelles is pitch-perfect in his assessment with the second half being a major disappointment. Newcastle just tried to hang on to a one goal lead and that never works in this league. If you invite that much constant pressure, you’re always going to find it difficult not to concede.
We don’t fault the effort from the lads as they still put in a shift. However, the mentality to just sit back and cede the game to Wolves at home is quite concerning.
The back three played well, and it was ultimately a mistake from goalkeeper Martin Dubravka that ended up being Newcastle’s undoing. But when you let a team like Wolves dictate the tempo and get their rhythm, they are generally going to find a breakthrough.
The first half was decent if not spectacular. While the first 30 minutes were a mundane affair for both sides, Newcastle came to life a bit after that. Jamaal was able to get the 1-0 lead from a superb Fede Fernandez cross.
It was some towering header by the captain. We haven’t seen too many of those lately from the 25-year-old. It was Jamaal’s first goal for Newcastle in almost two years. He last scored in January of 2018 against Burnley.
Lascelles was pleased to get on the scoresheet; however, he was more concerned that we did not get the win. This is what Jamaal said later in the interview about his goal, which was his 9th for Newcastle:
“Obviously I’m pleased that I got a goal, but it would have been better if we’d got the three points. That’s all I really care about, to be honest.”
If we are to take anything from this performance, it’s that to a man all agree that a draw at home against Wolves is a letdown. We at least don’t have to hear how this was a good point against an in-form Wolves side.
This was a match that we should be winning and but for an imprudent ultra-conservative second half, Newcastle could have gotten all three points yesterday.
