Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player Against Wolves?

It was a game in which Newcastle were not good enough except for a patch of play to end the first half. The first 30 minutes were a snoozefest from both sides as there was little to threaten either goalkeeper.

Newcastle would start to show signs of life around the thirty-minute mark resulting in a Jamaal Lascelles header and a 1-0 halftime lead.

It was then that the nonsense began. We don’t know what Steve Bruce’s plan was for the second half. But if you told us it was to hold out for a point despite having a 1-0 advantage, we would believe you.

You cannot just let a team like Wolves find their rhythm with such ease. Especially not at St James Park. It was just not good enough but was all too familiar.

The front three again failed to produce the goods. Miguel Almiron was lively today but just can’t score. However, his defensive contribution was outstanding.

Joelinton started well but faded significantly in the second half. Allan Saint-Maximin had his moments this afternoon but didn’t give Jetro Willems enough help with Adama Traore or Matt Doherty.

We can’t fault the defense or the Longstaff brothers in the midfield. They were all solid but the second half approach stacked the deck against them holding out for the full three points.

We don’t often comment on the referee but we don’t think Kevin Friend had a good afternoon. While Sean Longstaff did catch Neves with his studs, it wasn’t a brutal challenge and a yellow would have sufficed.

It also didn’t help that Ruben Neves put in an acting performance that Marilyn Burns in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre would have been proud of.

However, it’s another opportunity lost at home, and it’s just plain not good enough.

Defend him for what is the question. I don’t defend him for making appointments of the likes of Bruce. Issue is your focus is on him not appointing auditors etc rather than the many shocking things he has done to the club. Remember that big list I wrote that you chose to ignore (I don’t think you ever commented on it as it doesn’t fit with your agenda).

I dont particularly have an axe to grind with Bruce, he is here now so I will get support him – our problem is he is not Rafa, not as good as Rafa and we all feel he is an AshLIE yes man.

But you cant blame the bloke for taking the job, I have played at a decent level but never managed – if I was offered it I would of taken the job.

My biggest gripe is who picked Joe and ASM, Rafa had gone and Bruce was well down the list.

Both could turn out great players, I have my doubts about both, no end product. But who ‘buys these players’

I would not be surprised if Little Den is still on some commissions based scouting contract and he convinced Charnley it’s a great bit of business.

    Club is just a mess

Was willing to give Bruce the benefit of the doubt although I was completely devastated when the appointment was made. He quickly used that up and now I’m desperate to see the clown sacked.

Quite right there Neil – I felt a red was hash as well – Wolves weren’t exactly “Choir Boys” either.

It also didn’t help that Ruben Neves put in an acting performance that Marilyn Burns in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre would have been proud – Also l00% agree on this as well……..

But…… at the end of the day Home Games played 5 won 1 lost 1 drawn 3 is a p!ss poor return and on this showing we won’t be playing at the of Liverpool & Manchester unless is Toon v Everton in the championship!!!

I don’t see how Jib. He will win games for sure but that’s due to the team having some decent players (if unpredictable). Nothing will be down to Bruce the guy is absolutely clueless.

Lost that fiver I bet on a win, but, given turn of events, I’ll take that point. Last year they ‘cheated’ us of points in the last minutes.

Before the goal (and definitely before the red card) it was very clear that we were at a numerical disadvantage in midfield and it was only the extra man in defence that was preventing the opposition from scoring. This is why, too often in matches, the defensive line looks vulnereable to a counter attack. Our midfield is too flimsy, not because of the individual players particularly but because we play too deep and look to block the game out from the back.

Even back when Pardews days, we relied on the full backs to create width in attack and it was never sufficiently succesfull because the players would not be able to last more than 70 minutes. Having to run the length of the pitch, both forwards and back meant that once the fullback went for a cross in the attacking third it was either mishit or weak and vulnerable to a counter attack or giving away a free kick in the defencive third. The is simply just not enough enegry to run from end to end and hit accurate passes.

Newcastle haven’t scored more than once in any of their last 10 Premier League games (six goals), their longest such run since April 2015 under John Carver (10 games).

    Say no more!

And they let Rondon go when they could have secured his services for £16m Who on earth made that deccission? Err say no more I know the answer to that! MR M Ashley what a plonker he is….. You may know about finance MR Ashley but you know bu66er all about football.

Bruce got Longstaff his red card by not subbing Joelinton earlier. But not many managers lucky enough to get a position beyond their ability are going to take their most expensive signing off the field of play, unless they really have to.

Gave my man of the match to Almiron as we was our best defender when the wheels came off second half.
Time and Time again he broke up their attacks
Don’t know what Dubs was doing for their goal
Bruce should of brought on subs earlier as a couple of players were out on their feet
No real difference to last years football sideways backwards hoof to a centre forward who I felt sorry for him as no-one was within 20 yards of him all game(except for twenty minutes first half where we passed and moved with pace)
Missing Perez who was able to link Rondon and the midfield defence last year
    My merit marks
Dubravka 5 had nowt to do all game but what the hell was he doing for the goal
Yedlin 6 did ok but defending went missing to many time’s
Clark 7 had a decent game defended well got on some great blocks
Lascalles 7.5 steady away all game and a great header
Fernadez 7.5 got in some great last gasp tackles – passing a bit rusty – great cross for the goal
Willems 7 great going forward gives a lot more than Dummett going forward
nearly scored. Nearly scored – Had a rough time second half when Traore ran at him
Matty Longstaffe 7 had a excellent first half ran the show for us but faded second half
Sean Longstaffe 5 had a poor game give away to many stupid fouls – red card not sure. Did not get us going forward to many short balls and backward balls
Almiron 8 my man of the match – more for his defending second half got us out of trouble time and time again down our right – covered for Yedlin when he went missing. Some great runs and carries but needs a end product when put through – it will come!!
Maxi 7.5 had a great 60 minutes but ran out of steam – also like Almiron needs a end product – when to shoot – when to pass
JoeLinton 6.5 struggled today but who wouldn’t when nobody gets near him to help – needs help
Subs – not on long enough
Bruce 6 – needed to change subs earlier – maybe put Gayle up front next to JoeLinton and Atsu on earlier when Maxi was flagging
Also need to hook Sean Longstaffe after a hour.
Ref – did ok until we should of had a corner – from then on lost the plot
