BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson has given his predictions on this week’s Premier League matches. Lawrenson is predicting a 2-1 defeat for Newcastle at West Ham on Saturday.
Even though West Ham have been in shaky form, the former Liverpool man feels the Hammers are the safer bet in this one. This is Mark’s prediction in full:
Just when I thought West Ham were about to push on, they started a run that has brought only two points from their past four matches.
But while the Hammers are still horribly inconsistent, at least we know what to expect from Newcastle – they will come to London Stadium and try to park the bus.
Steve Bruce’s side cannot really do anything else, because they offer such little threat going forward – which is why I am backing West Ham, despite their poor form.
We would say we were a bit insulted with this prediction, but we really can’t make the claim that Lawrenson is entirely wrong. While we agree that Newcastle offer little threat going forward, we don’t necessarily think that they can’t do anything other than park the bus.
Steve Bruce does have some options available to him to try to get the attack on track. However, whether anything Bruce attempts will work is another question.
We should see Isaac Hayden back after his suspension, but his addition does little to dispel the “park the bus” sentiments from Lawrenson.
However, Andy Carroll did train today and should be fit enough for Saturday. Dwight Gayle is also waiting for his first start since 2018.
There have been murmurs that Jonjo Shelvey could have a place in the starting eleven. He may be able to create some chances for the front three with his vision and passing range.
We can see why Lawrenson is down on Newcastle, but we still have hope that the lads can get a result on Saturday.
