Fernandez, Hayden, And Shelvey Get Starts At West Ham

This is the team Steve Bruce has selected to face West Ham this afternoon.

As we suspected, Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey come into the midfield for the Longstaff brothers. Other than those two, it’s an unchanged side from last week’s draw against Wolves.

The front trio of Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, and Almiron will get another opportunity to try and get some goals. Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle will be ready to come on from what is a decent substitute’s bench.

Here is who Manuel Pellegrini will send out for West Ham.

This is another opportunity that Newcastle must take to get some points on the board. West Ham have struggled over the past four league matches with just two points. Let’s hope the lads can stretch that to five games without a win for the Hammers.

Howay The Lads!

Shelvey’s lack of mobility won’t be such an issue today given he;s up against Noble and Snodgrass. we can only hope he has found his motivation again, hopefully he’s watched his debut performance against West Ham this week for inspiration.

Joelinton needs to get himself into goalscoring positions and gets shots off when he has the chance, if he doesn’t look threatening again get Gayle on for 30 minutes this week.

    Fancy ASM against Zabalata..

Shelveys the kind of guy that can make you look stupid by putting in a good performance once in a while, but I dont like him or his attitude, hes not the longterm answer.

Yep Joelinton needs to stop coming too deep for the ball. We need more possession in MF so that we actually have more than just JL in our forward half to create some chances

    Team

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka; DeAndre Yedlin, Federico Fernández, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Jetro Willems; Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey; Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton, Miguel Almirón.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Emil Krafth, Paul Dummett, Matty Longstaff, Christian Atsu, Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll.

Looks like Manquillo is well out of favour!

@davetoon, I read recently Boleskine house is being rebuilt and people will be able to stay there. Seems like one for the bucketlist of Crowley fans.

Shelvey is shi*. We look better without him in the team. He’s a luxury player who will do better in teams that actually have idea on how to attack, like West ham. He should move to them in January.

We’ll be shi* today, as usual under clueless Bruce. I’ll be surprised if we have more than 1 shot on target.

    West ham 3 Newcastle 0.

Haller will punish us for not gettinh him when he was dirt cheap, seriously though i hope we atleast show up today, we have some good players we just seem to be terrible as a team attacking wise anyway..struggle so badly to keep the ball

ASM is a completely different dynamic to the side that could work well with Shelvey.

If Joelinton cannot find space today with ASM & Almiron dragging defenders out, and Shelvey supplying balls to run onto to, then he isn’t a natural striker.

Loic Remy didn’t seem like an out-and-out striker, but he had a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

One of the best articles I have ever read, especially this paragraph

But in hindsight, that at least felt like part of a process. Benitez described how surviving relegation would be a “miracle”, but he soon started walking on water. Between the beginning of November and the end of the season, Newcastle ranked eighth in the Premier League. More remarkable still was that from mid-January onwards, only four clubs scored more goals. Over that period, Benitez’s Newcastle outscored Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, West Ham and Everton.

@ancient I thought someone burnt it down? Some crazy stories were told by previous owners of strange occurances there. Crowley was supposed to have summoned a demon there and ran out of time before sending it back.

It’s a massive game for Shelvey this.Im hoping that our front three can make plenty of runs into space and hopefully Shelvey can find one of them once in a while and open the hammers up.Then it’s up to one of our front men to bury it..I think we’ll get chances in this match.HWTL.

ASM needs to do more tracking back when he doesn’t have the ball. Often leaves Metro exposed at the back

ASM tracks well for 60mins, then he starts tiring. Another obvious sub to make if that’s the case again today. Get on Atsu for him, I remember one of my favourite assists in recent years was when Atsu megged Zabaleta on the LW and then played it into the path of Diame to strike home in that mad 3-2 win a couple of years ago.
