Phew! That was a little much for us, but thankfully it is now over and with three points in the bag. What a performance today from this Newcastle team. Yeah, in typical fashion, the lads couldn’t make it a 0-6 cakewalk for the fans but instead brought us a 2-3 nerve-fest.
However, we looked an entertaining and threatening side this afternoon. Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron were unbelievable even if they couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net.
The defense was a little shaky, with the two second-half goals conceded. However, we did get two first-half goals from Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez from some inventive set-pieces. DeAndre Yedlin and Jetro Willems were too much for West Ham’s fullbacks.
Jonjo Shelvey put in a fantastic performance in the midfield, and Isaac Hayden was stout with some very timely tackles. It was indeed a terrific performance, but it just goes to show that we have to put away our chances. This one should not have been this close.
A special mention to Christian Atsu, who was superb as an outlet late in the game. He may have lost his place to Allan Saint-Maximin, but he made the right decisions on the ball to help the lads close this one out.
