Clutch Defender Not Named As One Of Three Set To Leave This Summer

Newcastle have quite a few players in the 25-man squad whose contracts are due to expire at the end of this season. They are goalkeepers Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow, right-back Javier Manquillo, defender Federico Fernandez, and midfielder Ki Sung-yueng.

There is also striker Andy Carroll but his situation is a bit different from the others. We have also not included Jack Colback or Jamie Sterry as they did not make the squad but their contracts will also run out in the summer.

It will be interesting to see what transpires with these players over the next few months. There has been talk of a new contract for Karl Darlow recently but nothing for the other four.

We would hope that Newcastle will see if they can work out a two-year extension for Fede Fernandez. The thirty-year-old is so experienced and such a model professional. It makes perfect sense to try to keep him around rather let him leave on a free this summer.

There is a report in the Daily Star that names three players who Newcastle will not offer new deals to. They are Rob Elliot, Javier Manquillo, and Ki. It could be good news that Fernandez is not mentioned in this report.

Hopefully there is something afoot behind the scenes for the former Argentina international. He’ll be thirty-one when his deal ends but could certainly continue at his current level for the next couple of seasons.

We also hope that Newcastle can see if they can offload Javier Manquillo for a minimal fee this winter. If we make a move for an incoming player, a squad place will have to become available.

It would make sense to try to get something for the 25-year-old rather than just allow him to leave for nothing in the summer. There was also some reported interest in him from Spain this summer. Even if he leaves on loan until the end of the season, that would at least open up a squad place for a new arrival.

Newcastle’s plan should become a lot clearer over the next few months as we see who gets offered new deals and what we do in the January window. But it’s shaping up to be a big summer at Newcastle where we could see a lot of players leave and hopefully some real quality arrive.

Neil – not sure if this is a typo or an American expression but what is ‘a clutch defender’?

No but I reckon the 40 million figure that they have blasted about is transfer fee, wages and bonuses combined to make it look like we paid out that huge amount!

Ron Knee – cheers – actually I’d just looked it up myself and it is an informal US expression – I’ve certainly never heard it before.

Yes Fernandez is well worth keeping and can still do a great job for NUFC but……

Will Mr Ashley see it that way I wonder?

We all know, only too well, his policy of having over 30 year olds in our squad!

See another turn out around the early 40k mark is likely on Saturday:

    Alex Hurst
Bournemouth took an 1,100 allocation which they haven’t yet sold for this weekend

So looking like around 42-43k for this Saturday, at best…..

It was commented on recently there’s posters not coming back as often as before?!
Well I am one of them, the main reason being I was tired of the personal insults, the bickering, the school yard mentality… boring boring… Hopefully things will pick up and the trolls will be exterminated and the posters will increase once more… Won’t hold my breath though.
