Newcastle Turn It On Late To Make It 1-1 At The Half

Newcastle were able to turn it around late against Bournemouth after a very frustrating start.

Martin Dubravka was called upon early and often as Bournemouth edged the first thirty minutes in what became a back and forth affair. The Cherries were on the front foot early, creating some excellent chances on the counter.

None better than in the 9th minute as Ryan Fraser got on to the end of a Callum Wilson cross from the byline but somehow didn’t get the ball past a waiting Dubravka. It looked a certain goal.

However, Newcastle fell asleep in the 14th minute on a corner as Bournemouth fashioned a terrific move leaving Harry Wilson unmarked, and he easily slotted the ball into the net.

A few minutes later, Jamaal Lascelles was forced off after he couldn’t recover from an early knock after being pushed into Martin Dubravka. Paul Dummett came on, and Jonjo Shelvey took the captain’s armband.

Over the next twenty minutes, Newcastle started to get into the game and create a few chances but nothing to really threaten Ramsdale in the Bournemouth goal. The lads showed a bit of patience but were just so frustrating in the final third. Though Bournemouth’s defensive shape was excellent in keeping Newcastle at bay.

Bournemouth had another excellent chance by Ryan Fraser go wide and got a few decent set-piece opportunities to stem Newcastle’s tide a bit.

However, Newcastle got a couple of excellent chances in the 38th minute. A mistake by Bournemouth’s Steve Cook freed Allan Saint-Maximin, but his shot was fired against the crossbar. The Frenchman went for power instead of placement. Jetro Willems followed with a shot that Ramsdale was able to push wide.

Saint-Maximin would use that power again in the 42nd minute as he drove in a wide shot that a sprinting DeAndre Yedlin was able to head in at the back post. Last week a Saint-Maximin delivery to Yedlin was ruled offside; however, this time VAR held up the goal, and it was 1-1.

The late drive flurry by Newcastle helped awaken a quiet St James Park, and now the lads have to take the momentum from the goal into this second half. They are a bit shaky at the back and will have to shore up the defense a bit.

However, there are three points here for the taking, and the lads must show the fans that they can win games like this one.

Please stop with that long ball. Did we learn nothing 1st half? Soon as we got it down and was patient we piled on the pressure.

It’s time to bin Mike for good, long enough here fella, I now get zero enjoyment from my beloved football club, we are just so very average in every way, not worth a light.

Gayle or Carroll would be good.

Former will stretch them in the channels and provide much needed ST instinct in the box. Be good for counters. Carroll would dominate Ake and Cook.

On balance I’d go with Gayle.
