What a glorious way to enter the third international break. It’s two wins in a row and Newcastle did this one the hard way by willing themselves back into the game after a tepid start.
This was a match filled with terrific performances. Our defenders were excellent as Fede Fernandez and Ciaran Clark put on a clearance show at the back. Paul Dummett came in for the injured captain Jamaal Lascelles and was as committed as ever.
The wing-backs were unbelievable especially going forward. It may have been the best performance by DeAndre Yedlin in a Newcastle shirt. Jetro Willems was outstanding as well. If we do make his deal a permanent one for just £10m, that is looking like a steal.
Jonjo Shelvey put in a shift for the second straight match and Isaac Hayden was his typical combative self in the midfield.
Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron were outstanding again. Allan was able to get an assist on the first goal by DeAndre Yedlin. He also hit the bar and had another one on one that he should have scored on. But some of his runs were pure artistry.
Miguel was all over the place and I think between him and Yedlin they could have covered the entire earth today. What a shift from those two this afternoon.
Andy Carroll also came on late and was outstanding as he helped defend the slim lead.
We also have to give Steve Bruce credit for sticking with this side and how they played in the second half. This team got off to a poor start but continued to work hard. They ended up with three points in what turned out to be a thrilling affair.

Took a gamble and sent it in with a flying header. Great attacking outlet. Non stop flying up and down on the flanks.

Comment #9Hail I was very much one who was going to give Bruce a chance but I’ve only seen negatives since he arrived. Even if on occasion I thought Rafa should have put a sub in I always felt comfortable he was managing the game and tactics. I honestly believe Bruce just stands there with his fingers and toes crossed.

Comment #10To the misers relucatnt to give any credit to Bruce.
Bore off. We clearly moved up the pitch, pressed and played it on the deck more once we went 1-0 down. That wasn’t just the players. Even if it were, it’s Bruce and his team who have got them in that mentality to carry it out, stay strong and briefed them on what to do.
Suppose we’ll be back to that old bag of bollocks with the Bruce haters: opposite of what they used to say about Rafa. Good performance – all Rafa. Bad – poor Championship players. Now it’ll be good performance – all down to the players. Bad – solely on Bruce.
Never mind Bruce is doing so much better at the same stage as last season, despite having sold 30 goals from last season.

Comment #11A bit topsy turvy this team: defenders scoring, forwards defending. But I’ll take it! 😉

Comment #12Carroll won a few free kicks but nowt else, is that his new role?
ASM, Miggy and Yedlin offer so much pace on the counter attack – worrying that ASM has had about 4 one on ones and has fluffed them all – thank fk our defenders have started scoring!
Good win today – as usual we were hanging on at the end and they thankfully missed a great chance at the end to equalise

Comment #13Interesting to see Arsenal have thrown Özil in against Leicester. Looking for a scapegoat incase the game goes wrong now that Xhaka is out of the team?

a few negatives though:
– we are too sloppy (could’ve scored 6 and conceded 5)
– our passing is awful at times (too many long balls)
– Shelvey looks way too slow for the PL
– our strikers still can’t score
– Joelinton needs to score a goal soon
positives:
– our commitment
– we look threatening going forward (ASM/almiron)
– Almiron and ASM our only players with pace and skills
– defensively we look decent (if we do not constantly hoof it forward)
Bruce doing better than Rafa at the moment, who would’ve thought that? still not a fan though.. Imagine what an Eddie Howe could do with this team

Comment #17it was an energetic and superb overall display from yedlin but not without its flaws
1. he gave the ball away a lot playing out from the back
2. he always seems to “defend” one on ones by slowly retreating into the box. very weird.

Comment #21Hail why did we start so deep and allowed them so much time to play through us? Surely Bruce has the most impact on team shape etc from the start and the players adapt during the game (as well as receiving some limited instructions)?

Comment #22He brought Carroll on to hold it up, occupy their CBs, use his experience to win freekicks and help in defence – it worked a treat. He trusts him to come on and give his all and that he did. loved seeing him at RB when Yedlin was recovering from a knock up field. That’s what NUFC is all about – all for one.

Comment #23What a result and quality performance to go with it, front 3 again created havoc but just isnt going for them in terms of scoring. Itll come though, the big difference is the serious hard graft, especially from almiron, him and yedlin can run for days!!
Still find it amazing that quite a few think manquillo is better than yedlin. ASM managed to even block what would have been almiron first goal. Overall very good performance against a side that has been very good defensively this season. What a difference 2 weeks make.

Comment #25Our left side looks really strong. Willems has added a lot and works well with Saint-Maximin. Defensively overall strong too. But there asre obvious issues too…I thought we were quite fortunate today overall. Cannot criticise the players for lack of effort though.
Will ne interesting to see what happens in the transfer window.

Comment #27Mindshaft. Couldn’t agree more, he will earn any respect he’s due by having a good season. If he gets us into a position of not fearing for relegation in the last 5-10 games then I will hold my hands up and admit I was wrong. Until then he is still, in my mind a distinctly average manager who is doing an okay job.

we would of finished 4th due to some really poor teams that season, however P45dew started believing his own press and mucked things up in the final few matches. Losing 5-1(?) to a relegated Wigan being one.

Comment #30Zero evidence? This season he has put players on in the wrong positions, subbed Almiron who was defending well only to concede straight away from that side, tried changing shape only to get hammered, isolated Joelinton, not made changes when players are gassed, not made changes when players are having a stinker or ineffective the list goes on. Plenty of evidence.

We weren’t any deeper than usual. We were just porous in CM, their nimble players dribbled beyond our two time and again 1st half. Something they clearly targeted. Got more of handle on it 2nd half, but it did happen on occasion still. Not much can be done about that – all formations and personnel have their strengths and weaknesses and sometimes they will be exposed more than others depending on the opposition. It’s for the manager to do the cost/benefit analysis initially and then if weaknesses are being exposed to try and rectify them best they can.
Managers don’t just send players out there with no plans on what to do if certain events happen.
Anyway I’m not going to argue anymore about whether a manager got it wrong, in a game which we won again and looked the more dangerous in for the most part. A slow start, yes, but the response was excellent.

Comment #32Bleatin.. you say about me… “I’m happy just to go along for the craic, the day out and the entertainment such as it is and as long as the team turns out I don’t care about tomorrow contingent”.
You couldn’t be more wrong.
I went to my first match in 1961 and I can honestly say that supporting NUFC has given me some of the most gut wrenching days of my life, I’ve watched us lose three FA Cup finals, a semi final, a League Cup final, have the Prem snatched from the jaws of victory by Man U and Rafa leaving to name but a few.
I still hate losing any game and it’s only in the last 20 years that I’ve succeeded in not letting that affect my mood for the whole weekend.
The craic, entertaining football and the rest is of nothing compared to seeing us win. That’s why I go to support NUFC… to see us WIN. Nothing else matters. Entertaining football is totally secondary to winning, but if we can get both, great.
And, of course I care about tomorrow.
I’m 66 and desperately want to see NUFC win trophies in my lifetime. I’m lucky to have seen one, the Fairs Cip in 1969, but I’d swallow hot coals to see us win an FA Cup or League Cup or, pray God, the Prem.
And we WON toay!!!

Comment #37the biggest positive is that we’re not playing that well (or there’s lots of room for improvement) and already have 15 points in the bag! if our strikers can score a goal, who knows what might happen.
I’m no bruce fan but so far he’s done as well as Rafa.
Rafa played negative tactics as well. I’d agree that Rafa is a better tactician but I also think Bruce has a bit more guts than Rafa

Comment #39muto would be great in the current set up
he does his best work outside the box
chasing balls down and nicking possession off midfielders
He has tremendous workrate plus he is a good goalscorer
surely deserves his chance in the starting line up
Gayle has great chemistry with shelvey.
and is probably the best goalscorer in the squad
if we are not going to use him, he needs to be sold in January
im certain some championship side would be willing to pay us £10m+ for his signature
