Newcastle’s Federico Fernandez is receiving some high praise for his performance on Saturday. The 30-year-old Argentine started his third straight game for the injured Fabian Schar.
Fernandez was outstanding and seemed to go into another gear when Jamaal Lascelles went off injured after 20 minutes. It was the best we’ve ever seen Fernadez play.
With his performance, Fede has earned some accolades. BBC’s football analyst Garth Crooks has selected Fernandez for his team of the week. He joins Leicester’s Ricardo Pereira and Sheffield United’s Chris Basham as the pundit’s top defenders of the weekend.
Crooks points out that the center-back led Newcastle with 62 touches, and his 35 passes were joint top. Crooks says the despite Fernandez not being one of the defenders who scored on Saturday, his gritty performance was a dominant factor in Newcastle securing all three points.
However, Federico Fernandez may have a legitimate claim for the game-winning goal. He tweeted a video of the goal from a new angle. It appears to show that Ciaran Clark may not have gotten a touch on the ball.
VAR please I think it’s my goal ? https://t.co/iMCxyXd7rl
— Fede Fernandez (@pajarofernandez) November 11, 2019
Well, it’s a very close call whether Clark did get his foot on the ball. Whether he did or didn’t, he played a crucial role as his presence allowed the ball to get past Bournemouth’s Aaron Ramsdale.
Either way, both Fernandez and Clark have been exceptional since they returned to the fold. Both are consummate professionals who have stepped up when Newcastle needed them the most.

Y’see, Bills, I’m having a perfectly reasonable debate with Tsunki and then you wade in with the insults. Why? What’s the point? I may not always agree with Tsunki, but I do respect him.
Tsunki “As has been mentioned we finished last season as one of the top in form sides. Based on your stats we are a top form side based on three games.”
If you’d rather we took the end of last season in isolation as we were towards the top of the form table, over the last 6 games we won 3, lost 2 and drew one. Solid form, for sure, for which Rafa was rightly praised as we drew away from the relegation zone.
Over the last six games under Bruce, we’ve won 3, lost 2 and drawn 1. We’re in 6th place in the form table and have moved away from the relegation zone.
I’m just saying, maybe Bruce is due some praise also.

Comment #5“…not sure Rafa is showing his world-class management there yet though, been a while since he has anywhere.”
Given the players he had to work with, he did very well in his last two seasons with us.

Comment #6Nothing against our players who are trying, but the fans deserve so very much more from our club, this latest carry on selling the land to be built on by a couple of p oxy office blocks is a total travesty, I can’t bring myself even to comment on our games, the clubs hiarchy have spoilt everything about my club.
Add the view of SJP will now be null n void, you f in horrible man, GET OUT.

Comment #7No I’ve not been “done” just rounded on by the usual suspects all chirping in with insults and the usual idiotic cameraderie. I know you’re desperate to support Bruce and everything to go back to “normal” but rewriting history and the form books to make Bruce’s “stellar” performance after a handful of games is truly desperate. Tell you what, rather than us all claiming bragging rights, let’s see how the season goes to half way and mid point then we can revisit this little scenario.
I hope we continue to win. I’d be ecstatic to see us actually do something meaningful. And Hail, you sink to new lows by pulling the old “plastic fan” thing I suppose next I will be a mackem eh? What a chump.

Comment #13Actually, the form tables are fairly interesting. If you look at the last ten matches, we’re up to fifth in the form table, behind Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester and Man City P10, W 4. L3, D3 = 15 points.
(For the sake of transparency, our last 10 matches last season were P10, W4, L4, D2 = 14 points).

Comment #17No, I’m quite sure you’re not a Mackem, you’re not particularly an NUFC fan either though, just a sad, strange little man who has my pity. Go get your glory fix supporting Man City. You’ll be much happier and we could cope without ya’. Promise.
Saving that tell me how many points Rafa is good for compared to Bruce with a given squad, over the course of a PL season. We can then add it to the total we get at the end of this season and judge if Rafa was correct and truthful to say he left on the basis of a lack of willingness to progress, or if it were just an excuse to chase the ££££.

Comment #20i for one at the start of the season was one of Steve Bruce’s biggest detractors but he’s done better than i thought he would . he’s our manager/coach i’am not saying everyone should get behind him as it’s never gonna happen . at least give him a chance. if he’s balls it up then you can start having a go . as much as we all loved Rafa he’s never coming back . playing decent football healthy position in the table (for now) …

Comment #26Tsunki the comment you made about not accepting SB until he won you someting or got into europe clearly exposed you fir what you are. It was a ridiculous comment but clarified your stance well and educated us all about you. You will have noted the large number of stars that Billson and others have got for their fairer position on the issue. Besides getting Rafa back from his 6m non entity club mid table existence in China, can you clarify exactly what you want on the management side?

Comment #38Tsunki “Rafa started with garden shears and built a lawnmower. Are we praising Bruce because he’s inherited the lawnmower?”
Nope, but when the owner forced the old gardener into retirement, he ditched the instructions for how to use the mower. The new gardener has written a new set of instructions and has got the machine purring quite nicely.
Of course, the blades could come spinning off and cause a horrendous injury at any point, but I reckon if the mower makes it through till Spring in good working order, the lawn could be looking quite tidy overall by Summer.
