Defender Gets In BBC Pundit’s Team Of The Week – Did He Actually Score On Saturday?

Newcastle’s Federico Fernandez is receiving some high praise for his performance on Saturday. The 30-year-old Argentine started his third straight game for the injured Fabian Schar.

Fernandez was outstanding and seemed to go into another gear when Jamaal Lascelles went off injured after 20 minutes. It was the best we’ve ever seen Fernadez play.

With his performance, Fede has earned some accolades. BBC’s football analyst Garth Crooks has selected Fernandez for his team of the week. He joins Leicester’s Ricardo Pereira and Sheffield United’s Chris Basham as the pundit’s top defenders of the weekend.

Crooks points out that the center-back led Newcastle with 62 touches, and his 35 passes were joint top. Crooks says the despite Fernandez not being one of the defenders who scored on Saturday, his gritty performance was a dominant factor in Newcastle securing all three points.

However, Federico Fernandez may have a legitimate claim for the game-winning goal. He tweeted a video of the goal from a new angle. It appears to show that Ciaran Clark may not have gotten a touch on the ball.

Well, it’s a very close call whether Clark did get his foot on the ball. Whether he did or didn’t, he played a crucial role as his presence allowed the ball to get past Bournemouth’s Aaron Ramsdale.

Either way, both Fernandez and Clark have been exceptional since they returned to the fold. Both are consummate professionals who have stepped up when Newcastle needed them the most.

At the risk of sounding stupid can the PR be pointed out as I don’t see any!

I do see some reasonably balanced comments making reasonable points but would be grateful if someone would show me the PR so that I know what to look for, Cheers

Jail you are turning into roger irrelevant. You ask about SB’s previous teams wanting him back. Do u think madrid want rafa. Or chelsea. Or liverpool? Nope. Arsenal will want a new boss soon. Maybe they will go for him but the fans will kill him for his ‘compact’ mantra. I was told by a leicester fan that they went for Rogers and not rafa for his style of football and man management. I dont see a reason to disagre. Rafa is v good but you became obsessed and deified him, hilariously. Rotunda and Co will see this as Rafa bashng. Its not. Rafa is a fine manager but was deified to levels beoynd criticism when he was here, because he didnt like Ashley. Thats what I objected to and the more intelligent observers on here know that . They also know that I am not hero worshipping SB. But we need to give his a chance to put his mark down and do his best. Thats called fair and balanced. Maybe the Taliban should try it. Same for the dimmer worshippers like OP.

    Beaten Bleatin,

You’ve gone full circle – from comparing (wrongly) Bruce’;s supposed poor performance this season to Rafa’s finish last season – to now saying ‘let’s judge Bruce at the end of the season’.

In other words you now know the stats don’t back up your anti-Bruce assumption.

Your more of a back tracker than a losing crab in a square off.

There are alot of unhappy people about and you think they would find a different pass time to football if it is causing such anger.

We haven’t won anything in my lifetime and haven’t won a league in almost everyone’s lifetime regardless of who the owner manager has been and if we have or haven’t shown ambition, but i have a lifetime of good memories from days out supporting the team and wins and games I’ve seen.

The look on my sons face when longstaff scored against man u and almost seeing him float home is worth more than any title or cup and ill keep going and supporting for the says when it is good and forget the bad ones

    E G Bill,

toon22’s default post is always to make alt accusations when positive posts are written about NUFC, Bruce or matches.

He is the kingpin, top of the heap, uno numero of the doomster brigade.

His posts are rank, repetitive and boring in the extreme.

    At the game.
Four buglers played the last post.
    It was class.

Something not done in recent years. Several service folks in the crowd in uniform.

It was supposed to be followed by a minutes silence on the Refs whistle.
Unfortunately the crowd broke out into spontaneous applause at the end of the last post.

Confused things for a few seconds. Could not be helped.

I’ll say it again. It was a touch of class.
    Repeat each year please.

Only when Ashley departs will anything get back to normal (I hope)…

    The Geordie Boot Boys.
In the late sixties they wore long Crombie coats and Dr Marten boots that came up to their knees.
    Hence the boot boys.
It has nothing to do with putting the boot in.

We are mental. It is a vernacular term. It means crazy daft in a fun sort of way.

Tsunki does have a valid argument that Ashley and the club are determined to try and get the fans to accept mediocrity with no ambition other than to stay in the PL with minimum outlay. If some fans want to accept this without kicking up a stink then that is their right as it is the right of others who can clearly see the policy not to accept it.
The appointment of Bruce was definitely an unambitious one after having Rafa here who despite all his achievements in the game was prepared to try and improve things gradually season by season with a sensible and sustainable model. He did appear to be making progress and to have a world renowned coach at the helm was very
comforting Rafa was obviously made promises that were’nt kept
which is the norm for Ashley so lost interest.

I am sure if we are all honest most of us expected to be floundering at the foot of the table with uninspiring performances every week. The fact that St Max has generated a bit of welcome excitement, as we have been starved of a flair player for so long, has rekindled some enthusiasm along with the team managing to get some unexpected victories. Whether this is down to Bruce or the team spirit that Rafa instilled who knows but we have not won anything in my lifetime and are unlikely to whilst Jabba is still here. Therefore we might as well take the positives and enjoy it when we win.

Take a look at the diminishing crowd at the ground on match day
This is what the PR will be tasked to address
They will try and give a positive spin on the utter mess of a club we have become

They will try and say the land sale wasnt that bad
We already have the start of yet another fakeover, Mexican this time

All for the same reason as usual
