Granit Xhaka was reported to be a target of Newcastle before his big-money move to Arsenal in 2016. At the time, Xhaka was playing for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga.
The Mirror are reporting that Arsenal are trying to bring in another Swiss midfielder from Monchengladbach in 22-year-old Denis Zakaria, and will try to use Xhaka as a makeweight in the deal.
The report insinuates that Arsenal would allow Xhaka to join Monchengladbach in January if they were given the first refusal on Zakaria if Monchengladbach decides to sell in the summer. Zakaria is reportedly a target of both Manchester United and Arsenal. Liverpool have also been mentioned in the past as having an interest in the defensive midfielder.
So Xhaka’s move to his former club would likely be on loan until the end of the season, and in return, Arsenal would have the first bite at a transfer for Denis Zakaria in the summer.
Xhaka spent four years with the German Club, which he joined from FC Basel in 2012. According to the Mirror, the 27-year-old would be interested in a move back to his former club, who currently are the surprise leaders of the Bundesliga.
The Mirror also adds to the growing chorus of news outlets proclaiming that Steve Bruce is trying to bring Granit Xhaka to Newcastle. It seems that we are going to hear a lot about the Swiss international until his future is sorted out.
