Newcastle were reported to have an interest in Portuguese right-back Aurelio Buta earlier this month.
There are new reports that Newcastle have sent scouts to Belgium to watch the Royal Antwerp star. According to the Daily Express, both Newcastle and Wolves have had scouts watching the 22-year-old recently.
Unfortunately, Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has had Buta on his wish list for some time and they look to be the runaway favorites to sign the speedster in January.
However, they are reportedly looking at an initial loan deal for the wing-back to provide cover and competition for Matt Doherty.
Aurelio Buta– Newcastle and Wolves scouting pacy right-back
Buta is a right-sided attacker who has a lethal cross. He came through the excellent Benfica Academy before joining Royal Antwerp in 2017 initially on loan. Antwerp made the deal a permanent one the following summer.
He has made 55 appearances for the Jupiler Pro League side in just over two years and has 10 assists. Buta is mostly deployed as a right-back but can play further forward as a winger or fill in at left-back if needed.
Newcastle are not in need of a right-back with three on the books in DeAndre Yedlin, Emil Krafth, and Javier Manquillo. However, Manquillo will likely see out his contract this summer and leave on a free. Yedlin also will have just 18 months left on his deal when the winter window opens.
If Wolves are unable to reach an agreement for Buta, maybe Newcastle can come in for him. He is likely to cost in the £5-10m as his contract with Antwerp will only have 18 months remaining on it as well.
While right-back is certainly not a priority now, if Yedlin’s contract situation is not sorted by this summer, it could become an issue then.
He would be a perfect replacement for Yedlin with his pace and attacking mentality. However, he looks to have a better final ball than the American. If Newcastle are not going to offer Yedlin a new deal, then bringing in Buta could be some good business.
