Sport Witness have a report saying that Newcastle are interested in Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu.
The 20-year-old has just broken into the La Liga club’s first team this season. According to reports in Spain, Newcastle have watched the 6’3″ center-back this season.
He joined the Real Valladolid youth setup in 2017 and made his debut for the first-team in the Copa Del Rey in January. The youngster started both legs in the 2-1 Cup defeat on aggregate to Getafe.
Salisu has become a first-team regular this season, starting all thirteen matches in La Liga. Real Valladolid are currently mid-table a full eight points above the bottom three.
Mohammed Salisu– breakout start to La Liga career
Salisu extended his contract with Vallodolid this past May to 2022 and there is a €12m buyout clause in his deal.
Everton, Sevilla, and Schalke are also credited with having watched the Ghanaian in action this season.
While Newcastle are stocked in central defense, they don’t have many youngsters looking ready to make a jump into the first team just yet. There are a few in the ranks like 20-year-old Kelland Watts, who is currently on loan at Stevenage.
Newcastle’s youngest first-team defender, Jamaal Lascelles, is 26-years-old and the second youngest, Fabian Schar, will turn 28 next month. We have been linked with a few other central defenders recently in Preston’s Ben Davies and Burnley’s Ben Gibson.
Salisu is still early in his career, having just broken into the Vallaolid first-team. He could be one that Newcastle track over the next few years to see how he gets on. Of course, the interest in the youngster is very high with his recent La Liga displays.
