Newcastle have not been publicly linked with a player from either team recently. Though ex-Magpie Romain Amalfitano, currently with Dijon, and former target Clement Grenier, now at Rennes, both started the match.
Seventeen-year-old wonderkid Eduardo Camavinga plays for Rennes. However, the French midfielder missed out on the trip to Dijon due to a slight muscle injury he picked up playing internationally a few weeks ago.
The player is likely not a target for Newcastle as he is considered one of France’s future stars. He is being tracked by Barcelona and Manchester United, who would have to fork out £51.5m to pry him from Rennes.
Like the Monaco at Bordeaux match that Newcastle reportedly had scouts at on Sunday, this match also had some quality young players that Newcastle may have been tracking.
Dijon’s 18-year-old midfielder Enzo Loiodice started the match and is a French under-20 international. Loiodice will turn 19 in a few days but has already made over 20 appearances for Dijon.
Dijon– celebrating Mounir Chouiar’s goal
Similarly, another French under-20 international, Mounir Chouiar, started on the left-wing and scored the clinching goal. Though, the 20-year-old just joined Dijon from Lens in September.
Matheus Pereira also started for Dijon in the midfield. The 21-year-old is on a season-long loan at Dijon from the mighty Juventus.
For Rennes, M’Baye Niang has been on Newcastle’s radar for almost five years. Our initial interest in the Senegalese international dates back to January 2015 when he played for AC Milan.
Niang is still only 24-years-old and has scored an impressive 6 goals in all competitions this season. However, the striker just joined Rennes from Torino this past summer for £13m.
It seems like Newcastle may be ramping up their scouting missions in France again. There have been links with a fair few players in Ligue 1 and 2 recently.
