It’s been close to three weeks since Neil Redfearn walked out as the head coach of Newcastle under-23 team. For the time being, Academy head Ben Dawson has taken up his old position in place of Redfearn.
Dawson has taken the helm for two cup fixtures, a 1-0 loss at West Brom in the Premier League Cup, and a 1-1 draw against Benfica in the Premier League International Cup.
The fixtures pick up for the youngsters over the next month as they face competition on the three fronts of league play and these two cups. The lads have six matches beginning today against Stoke before a two-week break begins on 12/21.
Redfearn and Dawson– the search continues for a new under-23 coach
This heavy schedule begs the question of how the search for a new under-23 head coach is progressing. The Chronicle have spoken to Dawson about the situation surrounding the search and how the players are getting on.
This is what Dawson had to say about the youngsters and the plan going forward:
“The lads have just carried on. I don’t think much has changed and that is how it should be.
“We’re trying to put something in place where no matter who is in charge, what we do stays the same.”
It looks like Newcastle are trying to put a plan in place to counter any situations like this that occurs in the future. It’s been a blessing having Dawson at the club who was the coach of the under-23s just last season. That has made the transition that much smoother.
However, it’s a lot on Ben’s schedule at the moment as he has to coach the reserves and run the Academy at the same time. But this is an important decision for Newcastle and they need to get it right. It looks as though Redfearn was not the right fit, so the club will have to be diligent to get the right man in place for the job.
This time around, there will also be input from Steve Bruce. Hopefully, the position gets filled soon, and it will be someone who can work well with Bruce and the newly returned Steve Harper.
The Chronicle also touched on a timetable for getting in a new under-23 head coach. This is how Dawson responded:
“At this moment in time we are going to have to look at that because of the number of games coming up.
“Getting another person we think is right for the job might take some time, it might not.
“We’ll just have to wait and see as we go through the process.”
It doesn’t seem like it is going to happen too quickly from that response. But what does at Newcastle, who seem to drag out every process to it’s the agonizing end.
In the meantime, the lads are in the very capable hands of Ben Dawson. We’ll just have to wait and see who next person will be to help develop our top youngsters into future first-teamers.
