Newcastle remain in 14th place after a very disappointing 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa. It was a superb display from Jack Grealish who ran the game for Villa. It came down to Conor Hourihane’s set-piece deliveries that sunk Newcastle.
Allan Saint-Maximin showed some flashes and Martin Dubravka had some excellent saves but this is another Monday night to forget for Newcastle
Both sides came out unchanged after a 2-0 Aston Villa lead at the break. Newcastle started on the front foot to open the second half highlighted by an Allan Saint-Maximin shot that was pushed wide by Villa keeper Heaton.
However, Aston Villa got a flurry of set-pieces that kept Newcastle pinned in their end. It was a mix of excellent saves and good luck that Aston Villa didn’t put the game away during this run of play.
After 62 minutes, Newcastle made their first change bringing Paul Dummett off for Andy Carroll switching the formation to a 4-4-2.
In the 69th minute, Andy showed his technique as he won a cross and chested it down for a right-footed strike that was unfortunately right at Heaton.
Joelinton, who took an elbow to the nose earlier, was replaced by Dwight Gayle in the 72nd minute. It was another frustrating display from the Brazilian.
Aston Villa still couldn’t put the game out of reach as Dubravka made a superb save in the 77th minute on our former target Wesley who should really have scored.
Newcastle brought Christian Atus on a few minutes later for Miguel Almiron. Newcastle had a few chances to close the game but just couldn’t find a way to get on the scoreboard.
Well, there are now many places up for grabs for this weekend’s match against Manchester City. Newcastle were just not good enough and some of the players who have come back into the fold could find themselves back on the bench after tonight’s display.

Comment #41The midfield is a shockingly disjointed and mismatched setup. Bruce knows nothing about holding the bulk of play there. He somehow has forgotten what it’s like to be on the back line and bring exposed by a non existent defensive midfield who can’t get the ball moving away from him and upfield. He knows even less about how to use the midfield to open up the park widthways and exploit spaces at the wings. And he has a 100% overpriced forward who crucially lacks the one skill his trade requires. Anticipation. Oh dear. This will not end well unless he can fix it.

Comment #42What’s most important is that we had a go at them while they were there to be taken and didn’t sit back with all that negative defensive stuff…oh…wait…wait…I’m thinking … wait…

Comment #43After some managerial musical chairs and furious January purchases I seriously doubt West ham and Everton will be down here in the mud with us. So I expect we will be one of two teams yo-yoing for the third bottom place in two months because for definite there will be no managerial change or furious buying at this club. No sir- eeeee.

Comment #46There’s only one person to blame for tonight and other toothless performances and that is the owner.
It was he who forced our only hope of on-field success out of the door. It was he who insisted that his minions choose which players to buy.
It was he who, despite advice supposedly spent £40m on a player who just doesn’t fit in with the players we have, their skills and vision. £40m for Joelinton? No chance it’s probably been whatever agency fee’s been agreed with his agents (hasn’t the club signed them up to act on their behalf?) plus a fee for the Joelinton.
Yes, Mr Ashley, the master of everything has screwed up yet again.

Ashley thrives in the excitement of football – not the excitement of the will we win a major trophy, but the excitement of rele-frigging-ation!

Comment #48It’s not rocket science that when you have three unproven players up front that can’t score goals that your not going to win games. The defenders have pulled us out the shit recently with goals but that isn’t going to happen every week.Bruce has no ideas during games to try and change things and that’s why he’s the second worst manager in Premier League history, soon to be the worst. Its a Championship squad and unless we get a striker in January who knows how to score in this league it’s not going to end well.We also need a serious upgrade in CM and another winger who can provide assists.I don’t think the parasite will provide any of these and therefore I think relegation number three is on the cards.

Comment #49Only the deluded would have thought AVFC would be 3 points for our taking. I was just hoping we could sneak a point out. I think thus far we’ve over achieved. Another 25 points could be tough coming riding on flukes without tweaking our front and the middle. Two issues need immediate fix. First, we need an enforcer in the middle, and second we need to widen our game upfront. SeanL could be prepped to deal with the first (although prepping players doesn’t appear to be Steve Bruce’s forte) and juggling the front three could address the second. Although it’s not doom and gloom yet, I don’t see us getting anything from the next game. I’m also worried about potential trouble due to injuries as games come thick and fast.
