Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player In 2-0 Defeat At Aston Villa?

Well, so much for the lads not feeling the effects of the two-week break. While a lot of this performance had to do with the decision to just sit back and let Aston Villa have their way, the two goals came from our inability to defend set-pieces.

Our front three just never got in sync though Allan Saint-Maximin had his moments. Joelinton and Almiron were just not good enough in the final third. This match just hearkens back to our early season struggles in front of goal.

There were few notable performances, but Martin Dubravka kept us in this game with some crucial saves. Without our goalkeeper, this could have been a lot worse.

We lacked any semblance of putting together a good run of play except to open the second half. However, Aston Villa were able to pin us deep with a sequence of set-pieces at the 55-minute mark and we never really got going after that.

Steve Bruce changed the formation and brought Andy Carroll on for Paul Dummett, which showed an inclination to try and get a result. However, it just never amounted to much, and we basically ended on a whimper.

This was just such a disappointment and is not an encouraging way to start our string of 9 games in 38 days. Now we face Manchester City at home on Saturday. While we won this fixture last year, it’ll take some turn around to get the same result this time.

Terrible display and frustrating from start to finish. The international break has caused our players to suffer from amnesia as they all forgot how to play footie today. Woeful effort. We made Villa look like world beaters.

I still do not see what Joelinton brings to the team.

If we are playing him out of position or not to his strengths then it makes you wonder why we bought him in the first place to play at no9
