Newcastle have reportedly been scouting Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salius recently. The 20-year-old defender is putting in some impressive displays in La Liga this season, which is his first for the Spanish club’s senior team.
Recently, Sevilla denied interest in the 6’3″ center-back. It was thought that they were the strongest contenders for the Ghanaian’s signature.
However, a few new clubs have been reportedly tracking the youngster. Norwich City have reportedly had scouts watching Salisu, who has a £10m release clause.
Now, there is a report in the Daily Mail that Manchester United have also been tracking the defender.
According to the Mail, Manchester United may have an inside track due to the player’s agent being the father of Juan Mata. They are reporting that the Red Devils maintain a high interest in Salisu.
Newcastle are flush with center-back options at the moment but don’t have any in the first-team squad under the age of 26. In the Academy, there is Kelland Watts, on loan at Stevenage, and Ludwig Francillette. However, both are not close to the first-team at the moment.
A lot will depend on what Newcastle decide to do with Frederico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark, who are both over the age of 30 and have limited time left on their contracts.
However, if Newcastle have a keen interest in Salisu, they may have to act fast as Manchester United, Everton, Southampton, Norwich City, and Schalke all have reported interest in the defender.
