It was not too hard of a selection for Newcastle’s best player at Aston Villa on Monday. There were only a handful of players who put in notable performances.
Martin Dubravka was in fine form and made some crucial saves. Allan Saint-Maximin tried his best to create some in attack even if nothing really came off for the Frenchman. Jetro Willems also got forward while playing solid defensively.
That is far too little to to witness on a Monday night especially for the travelling fans. The lads just didn’t put it together and it feels like we’ve regressed since the win against Bournemouth.
However, Martin Dubravka does deserve some praise for keeping Newcastle in the game. The 30-year-old made some crucial stops on Ezri Konza and Wesley.
Our readers have selected the goalkeeper as the best Newcastle player from Monday’s defeat. Out of the 728 votes, Martin gathered 322 for 44%. It was a comfortable margin for the Slovakian.
Allan Saint-Maximin fails to win for the first time in three matches. He last poll Saint-Maximin didn’t top was the defeat at Chelsea which also went to Dubravka.
The 22-year-old collected 28% of the vote for a respectable second place this time around. Jetro Willems was a distant third with just 8% of the total votes.
Who Was Newcastle's Best Player In 2-0 Defeat At Aston Villa?
- Martin Dubravka (44%, 322 )
- A. Saint-Maximin (28%, 203 )
- Jetro Willems (8%, 55 )
- Federico Fernandez (4%, 27 )
- Andy Carroll (3%, 20 )
- Isaac Hayden (2%, 17 )
- Jonjo Shelvey (2%, 17 )
- DeAndre Yedlin (2%, 15 )
- Miguel Almiron (2%, 11 )
- Joelinton (1%, 10 )
- Dwight Gayle (1%, 9 )
- Christian Atsu (1%, 9 )
- Paul Dummett (1%, 8 )
- Ciaran Clark (1%, 5 )

Not sure how you could feel proud on Monday night. Not so many goals shipped as at Leicester but still really dire.

Comment #9Tom so sre you trying to say we dony love the team as much as you do because we can be honest about how god awful we are?? What kind of person wants to go around lying to themselves by saying anything else? Seriously.
I WANT Newcastle to win I WANT City to loose, but I’m a terrible person because reality tells me were gonna get hammered?
You’re going after the wrong people entirely when you say crap like that. But whatever!!

“I wasn’t surprised to see Bruce set up so negatively, triggering my own PTSD of how he used to field the team when he was villa manager. But I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw not a single Newcastle player in our half. You guys have a decent side and more than enough quality to try and take the game to us – if you’re parking the bus against 17th in the table, you know you’ve got problems!

as i said yesterday we were crap on monday i said i’am a geordie and proud i wont come on here and say we are gonna get beaten , the only time we never looked like we wouldn’t lose games in the EPL was when Keegan was at wor club , even when the late great SBR was there we were never as good as when Keegan had us riding high in the league turning teams over playing with style . with SBR we never knew which team was gonna turn up even though he had us fairly high in the league ect ect , as i said i would never ever not even in the real world say we will lose a game get battered off other teams . yes i’ll say if they are crap after a game mate . but people on here never happy if we win they moan as well pisses me of big style …

Generally a lot of people tend to be more right than wrong. Just saying….

Comment #20I just couldn’t believe how deep we were playing against Villa fair enough if it was City but Villa were poor and we made them look like a top 6 team!
Shelvey should easily be able to do what Grealish does for them its not like hes that much faster a player he just has the desire to go make things happen!
I think Schar coming back in for Dummett would make a big difference as hes not going to let Shelvey come deep to just pick the ball up as he would drive forward which would force Jonjo to actually make some movement up top

If anything this was worse than the Leicester game as we had 11 men on the pitch and were playing Bruce’s preferred formation as Willems wasn’t fit against Leicester! If it wasn’t for Dubravaka’s saves it would have been the same scoreline

Comment #29Jib, Rhodes in the Grosvenor house posted closed until further notice in September (I think), at the time we thought it was a finance thing, but it appears not.
And yes, I went to one of his places years ago I don’t recall it as being as memorable as when i went to Ramsey’s “Verre” as was, it was one of his Chefs nights, so he was there, the couple we we with, well the guy was a producer of his back in the UK (we didn’t know it at the time), so we paid for the food and he foot the considerable bill for the wine. Now that was a night.
Anyway, sad to see him gone.

Comment #32“Other managers would have waited to make the change. Instead, he was proactive, wasting no time in attempting to find a way back into the game. The reward came just before the interval when Yassine Meriah’s error gifted a goal to Dele Alli and the momentum shifted.”
From Sky Sports about Jose last night for Spurs Champs game he made a sub at 30 mins to take Dier off which changed the game!
Oh how we could do with even 10% of that level of skill

You’ve kind of supported my contention about the difference
At Leicester it was just a shambles
with no discernible tactics or plan
On Monday night Bruce gave Villa
way too much respect the way
he set us up

Comment #36Alan Hutton speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:
“I think the way Steve Bruce sets his teams up, there is such a big gap between the midfield and the striker.
“It leaves them isolated, it is difficult and you are asking him to do something spectacular to score a goal.
“Everywhere Steve Bruce has went he has tried to play this formation…
“When we were at Villa he tried to make us play that formation, it didn’t quite work out and we didn’t get going.
“I find it quite difficult for the striker.
“It is very difficult to play that way.
“I think he has given his main front three a good go at it but it has not quite worked out.
“Maybe it is time to bring one of these [other Newcastle attacking players] in.”
Let’s stop kidding ourselves that the football is better (it really isn’t) and just start hoping there are 3 worse teams than us this season to somehow keep us up

There was no discernible tactics or plan unless you call hoof the ball to ASM or Almiron and expect them to beat 3 or 4 defenders to score all while having everyone else defend for most of the match a plan?

Comment #40Which incidentally that tactic worked quite well against West Ham but they had slow defenders once Villa had worked out that was the plan they dealt with us pretty easily!
