With Andy Carroll now out with a rib injury, Dwight Gayle’s place in the team is that much more important at least for this weekend.
While Bruce has relied on Andy to be his first substitute for Joelinton, that could fall to Dwight Gayle against Manchester City.
The 29-year-old has barely featured this season due to a calf injury he suffered in July. Though he’s been available for close to two months, Dwight has only played 22 minutes this season in 3 substitute appearances.
His longest outing was this past Monday in the 2-0 loss at Aston Villa when Gayle came on as a 78th-minute substitute for Joelinton. Andy Carroll had already come on for Paul Dummett as Bruce transitioned from a back five to a back four.
Gayle only managed two touches on Monday, and the reports were that he was extremely frustrated with the lack of service.
The interest in the 29-year-old from Championship clubs is well documented. It is expected that Nottingham Forest, West Brom, and Leeds could make a move for the poacher in January.
With just 18 months left on his contract and him fast approaching 30, it could be a sound move financially to offload Gayle this winter.
However, Steve Bruce is going to fight against any approaches for Dwight in January. The Chronicle have published some of Bruce’s comments on his rarely used striker. This is what the head coach had to say about allowing Gayle to leave:
“I don’t want to let Dwight Gayle go. I made that pretty clear in the summer. How would I replace him?
“And I wouldn’t want to let any of our good players going in January. I fought hard in the summer to keep him and that will be the case again.”
It’s all well and good for Steve Bruce to fight to keep Gayle at Newcastle. However, if he isn’t going to be used, then it may be best for Newcastle to get some funds so that he can be replaced.
While the amount of money Newcastle could get for Dwight would not fund a suitable replacement outright, it could help offset the fee for another striker. However, if Bruce is willing to give Gayle a chance then we are all for it.
Though his value diminishes with each passing window and since his contract is up in 2021, Bruce needs to either see what he can get out of the player or cash in on him to bring in someone who will actually get a game.

Comment #43Bruce is likely to keep faith with his goal-shy front three of Joelinton, Miguel Almirón and Allan Saint-Maximin against City……
With their attacking trident having scored one goal – Joelinton’s winner at Tottenham in August – during a collective 57 hours since joining the club,

Lord Haw-Haw was a nickname applied to the US-born Briton William Joyce, who broadcast Nazi propaganda to the UK from Germany during the Second World War. The broadcasts opened with “Germany calling, Germany calling”, spoken in an affected upper-class English accent.

Comment #45Joyce was convicted of one count of high treason in 1945 and sentenced to death, with the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords both upholding his conviction. He was hanged on 3 January 1946, making him the last person to be executed for treason in the United Kingdom.

I wasn’t comparing goals record, I was pointing out that bringing a player from the Champo to the PL in most cases takes a bit of time, Maddison clicked straight away Murphy didn’t at all, if we’re spending big in January we need it to be on a proven goal scorer not a lad who may or may not make the grade.

Howay man, not playing Mitro nearly cost us the title? Nothing to do with Ashley going back on his promise to strengthen in January then sending Bishop, Barnes and Carr to the games creating a truly horrible atmosphere. While all our rivals added to their squads Rafa was told just to get on with it. Via Churnley of course, Mikey was too busy to pick up the phone and explain why he was breaking his promise.

Comment #56It’s entirely moot naming proven goal scorers because the first rebuff will be that the club will not buy them. End of proven goalscorer discussion.

Comment #57I’ve yet to see a convincing argument beyond entirely wishful thinking that selling mitro was a “huge mistake”. It was absolutely anything but a mistake of any sort. I’d love to see the proof that anything good would have come in keeping him here. There are some strange theories knocking about that just won’t die.

Comment #63“Mitrovic is a good Championship striker,” yes, he most certainly is that, 27 goals in 35 games for Fulham in the Championship good, which let’s face it, is pretty damn good alright, as has been his disciplinary record in that time.
We had him and Murphy in our Championship squad, both good, or more accurately, one very, very good, the other very good, that’s two top target men, and we had Perez and Gayle ready made to play second striker, both also very, very good Championship players, but we played Gayle up top, Perez awkwardly behind him, struggling to form an easy partnership, and for a while Diame, go figure, even more awkwardly, while Mitro and Murphy cooled their heals on the bench restricted to bit part roles.
We basically played one way, probe, probe, probe, till Gayle got in behind for Shelvey to pick off, while 4 other good quality outfield offensive players ran around in support rather than being given the level of individual responsibility that their capacities fully warranted.
Look at this 11, formation and bench and tell me that it doesn’t have plenty more football and ways to score goals in it than the one we most often played, which was essentially a two man show, and tell me what other sides in the league had anything like the same overall quality, or anything like as good a manager.
……………….Darlow.
Mbemba..Lascelles..Clark..Dummett
…………..Diame….Shelvey….
……Ritchie….Perez….Gouffran
………………….Mitrovic.
Yedlin, Anita, Atsu, Gayle, Darryl Murphy, Colback, Hayden, etc.
Rafa is the best thing to happen to Newcastle under Ashley by a country mile, but that really was not his finest moment in football management, and yes, it did nearly cost us the title. Not promotion, which was pretty much all that really mattered anyway, but 1st place certainly, and with it the silverware, if not for Brighton inexplicably handing it to us at the death.
To be honest, I think he overthought it, being unfamiliar to the league, but man for man we were streets ahead of anything else in the division, yet we were sent out to play within ourselves.

Comment #69Nicky that whole squad was good for the championship winning project, but nowhere near what we needed to continue in the PL which of course we did. And you have to be short – sighted to not be able to discern after all this time that not only was benitez making absolutely certain of promotion by consolidating the team as a defensive unit first, building a squad from the back, but he was also looking well forward to the first season in the PL and more than likely working on the knowledge that he had found the owner less than enthused about spending once the job was done.
And “nearly cost us” – what are you on about? You make it sound like you had your foot trapped in railway points but just managed to free it in time before being hit by the 08:20 to York, stopping at Darlington.
Now we are being handed the Championship by Brighton, not that their strategy wasn’t as good and not being as robust they failed to concentrate? What kind of narrative are jokers like you trying to promote?

An accurate assessment. Rafa was the best thing to happen to the club under this owner, but curtailed by his own beligerence as much as being shafted.
