Loan Lad Fails To Make FA Cup Squad Despite Returning To Training This Week

Elias Sorensen did not make the matchday squad for Carlisle United this afternoon in their FA Cup 2nd round match at Forest Green.

The 20-year-old missed out on last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Cambridge due to an illness. It was thought that Sorensen would be back in contention for today’s match so his absence is a big concern. He was spotted at training yesterday in images released by Carlisle United.

Elias Sorensen– in Friday’s training session

Carlisle just announced Chris Beech as Steven Pressley’s replacement this past Tuesday. It was hoped that the new manager would opt to use Sorensen more than his predecessor. However, today’s developments have to be a big concern for all at Newcastle.

Just yesterday, Newcastle Academy head spoke about Elias’s loan spell to the Chronicle. Dawson still seems calm about the situation. However, he must see an issue with the youngster nowhere near a starting place.

“It is a difficult one for him. Ultimately he needs to try to get in their team (Carlisle).

“Sometimes showing a bit of will can send a message to the manager by showing he is prepared to play in those type of games.

“It’s him saying: ‘Look I am digging in here and working hard and want to play’, so in that respect it’s not a bad thing.

“We are obviously monitoring the situation closely. Shola Ameobi is speaking to Elias and Carlisle on a regular basis.

“We haven’t got any major concerns at this point in time. We will meet next week as we always do with the loan manager to discuss not only him but also the other lads we have on loan.”

If Sorensen can’t break into the team at Carlisle under three different managers, then alarm bells should be ringing. Sorensen made just 6 appearances under Steve Pressley in the league and only a very late cameo under his assistant Gavin Skelton after Pressley was sacked.

Now Sorensen has failed to even make the squad in the FA Cup second round. While the lad could still be suffering from his illness, he was at training yesterday, so we have to hold out hope that he just wasn’t ready to return.

However, Carlisle play at Morecombe next Saturday and we need to see Sorensen in Chris Beech’s team, or it could be time to recall the striker back to Newcastle.

Who Was Newcastle's Man Of The Match Against Manchester City?

Great point today and a Rafa type performance.

    Couple of negs for me…

Dubs was doing my head in kicking the ball upfield every time instead of throwing it or passing to one of our defenders – Jo is so isolated that City just put two or three players around him and won it back time and again.

This is making Jo look a mug but one, he wasn’t signed as a Rondon type hold up player and two he clearly isn’t. And Dubs STILL kicked it out high and long when Gayle came on. No chance!

Giving any team the ball back easily is a mugs game but giving it to the likes of City is madness. Bruce – tell Dubs to pack it in and you should have done that at half time.

Having said that, Dubs made some great saves, especially the one from Sterling near the end.

Back to Jo. We’ve got two wingers ASM and Al who rarely cross the ball, both usually win it deep and run forward and then cut in, ASM especially. It is pointless imo playing Jo if this continues because if he has anything to offer the team he’ll never show it with the total lack of support and service he’s getting. I notice in a brief read of previous comments some are saying Gayle did plenty when he came on – not from where I was sitting, and it wasn’t his fault – the only time he got near the ball was trying to out jump City defenders for Dubs long punts.

The good bits – Willems is class, Manq and Fede were warriors and Dubs made a two or three great saves plus Shelvey put a big shift in and well deserved his goal.

This was a game we could have won and that says more about the problems City have defensively than it does about our attacking force.

I would seriously consider playing ASM in the CF position and bringing in Atsu. ASM would be dynamite further forward on the break instead of tiring himself out by mid 2nd half chasing back and running from deep.

If Bruce keeps playing Jo in this set up his confidence, which can’t be good now, is just going to get worse.

The minority of loudmouths who tell everyone on the blog they are “idiots” and “know-nowts” are my target. The start of today’s match thread was a complete backfire for them.

No, I don’t want the calibre of Bruce here. Yes, I want better players and more ambition. But I also don’t will our players to fail or talk clappers about players who are the only thing between us and relegation.

Come on jane that’s not really the right way to look at it now is it. We wouldn’t have conceded 3 goals in any match under Rafa and we would certainly have more clean sheets.

Bill’s I’m glad you weren’t the only one who noticed City were swarming Joe. But still people expect him to just magically keep the ball against 3-4 players all on his own.

The frustration of not being able to do anything with no support and so many opposition players around him is starting to make him not try enough and become disinterested. But hey keep blaming the poor lad for something he CANT fix.

Bleatin so we can’t have opinions on players now? Even though I don’t think shelvey or Joel are the answer at the moment at least I god dam hope they both prove me wrong and rip it up. I was so excited by the signing of Joelinton and it wasn’t long ago I was saying shelvey should be part of the England team.

IrishRob – Our defence was one of the best in the league under Rafa it’s now one of the worst in the league under Bruce.

Strange how we’ve got more points at this stage than last season.

We conceded 5 at Leicester with 10 men for 55 mins and had one 3-1 shocker at Norwich.

A gross exaggeration to say we have one of the worst defences in the League.

Enjoyed the match (four good goals) yet in a funny way as for all Man City’s possession they looked laboured and had a feeling even when we went 2-1 down – we got a chance we would equalise.
Joe Linton is getting a lot of stick on here but I thought he did OK being the lone striker who had two and sometimes three players on his back all the time. also defended their free kicks well with a couple of clearing headers.
Thought the back five stuck to their task all game and when they were breached Dubravka was at hand.
Midfield Shelley playing ten fifteen yards further ups a different player to when he is sitting on the centre halvers shoulder.
Bruce not sure about his substitutions tho once we took JoeLinton off were still hoofing the ball long to Gayle.
Just wish our boys were a bit more confident on the ball and passing instead of wanting to get rid of it all to quick and often putting the opposition into possession.
Going to be a different proposition on Thursday night as City give our players space and time on the ball – Sheff Utd are bigger and stronger and press all over the pitch and have runners from deep – going to have to be physically strong to get anything

    My merit Marks
Dubravka 8 – had no chance with the goals but aprt from that had a excellent game pulling of a brilliant double save and tharting Sterling at the end with a top draw save.
Manquilla 7 – for being left in the cold the past month came back and excelled at the back – got in some great blocks and got forward at every opportunity – driving run led to free kick that led to our second goal
Clark 7 – been a revelation since coming back into the team didn’t put a foot wrong and started to Marshall the defence in Lascalles absence
Fernandez – 8 Pick of the defenders – cool under pressure and carried the ball out of defence to set up attacks a couple of times – seems to have a understanding with Clark
Dummett – 6-5 defence well but his distribution let him down and looked for the back pass all to often
Williams 8-5 my man of the match just pipping Fernandez with his goal – cool finish – should teach our forwards how to do it. Not just attacking but defended well – skilful on the ball and set Saint Max away time and time again.
Hayden 7 – did ok but never really seen him until second half when he pushed a lot further up the pitch and tidy but the game went past him for long periods – looked tired
Shelvey 7.5 – great goal – played a further ten yards up the pitch and makes a difference to his all-round play – again some great balls but in with that his tackling he has got to watch as he goes in to many times with his studs showing
Almiron 6.5 a bloody enigma – does some excellent things but – good set up for goal but needs to be stronger and his shooting is weak or wayward – also when crossing needs to hold the ball up until players get up to him when crossing as today put in two excellent crosse but our players could not get up in time to cash in – oh for a goal.
JoeLinton 6.5 – battled away on his own all game in a thankless task of holding the ball up when no one can get near him for the knock-downs – chest downs. still not a centre forward and needs someone up alongside.
Saint Max 7.5 pick of our forwards – caused City problems all game with his dribbling ball carrying and runs out of defence – was knackered at the end – not sure if push in pen box was a pen.
    Subs
Gayle 5 – did ok but looks slower than he did when last here.
Atsu – not on long enough
Bruce 6 set up team well but subs left me wondering – might of put Sean longstaffe in for Hayden and Gayle for Almiron.
Ref – 4 was poor give Man City to many decisions second half and defender should of seen red for to yellows for pushing over Manquilla and also missed the pushing of Almiron off the pitch.

Never mind good result in the end team showed resolve to come back twice against the champions.

going to be a lot tougher Thursday night – heres to that game

Well if you look at the table it clearly shows there are only 4 other teams who conceded more, and if you look at the clean sheet records we are behind on that from last year two.

We are far less secure at the back now than we were last year surely you can’t deny that? We have more points became of two things, that was one of the worst starts to the league we have had in living history. Amd second where our defence falls down this year they are picking up by getting the goals that are winning us these games. But it still doesnt mean they are not far poorer defensively than last year.

I remember going into games thinking we cant loose because we certainly wont concede a goal. I most definitely dont have that same confidence this year.

We won’t get many crosses in whilst we play Miggy and Max as inverted wingers. They’ll cut inside every time to get on their good foot. So our tactics aren’t about getting crosses in. Might be worth Bruce switching them around now and then.
Our forward line is stepping up massively in quality from their previous standard. Not like we’re blessed with options is it?
Personally I’d sell Gayle to a Championship club pushing for promotion in January and put that money towards another striker. Joelinton has time on his side, but we need a more prolific striker now.

I never thought I’d say this but the exact player we need is a 34 year old. Even if he could do nothing else, if we had a finisher like Ronaldo wed be in a champions league spot atm. It’s our huge huge downfall.

But then again maybe even Ronaldo might not score goals in this team playing the way Bruce sets his forwards up.

ASM is making me fall in love with football again… That kid is class but Walker with his pace nullified his runs in behind today but he still had a decent game. Dubs won us that point today, some of his saves where outstanding and he held everything today too. Dummet is the most at risk of the centre halves at the moment I think, but he had an alright game but I’d rather see one of the more natural leaders in the centre and Clark edges the left side position. The Sheff Utd game is gonna be tough, watched them a few times and really like how they play, and they’re a very fit side.

83, maybe that’s why Bruce sets us up with inverted wingers then? Like I say, we’re not blessed with options so perhaps this is the set up to get the best out of him. He spends too much time on his own really,
If the forward line gets in the goals we could be a dangerous team. Still think we need to get the midfield closer to the attackers though. Still, a good point today against the reigning champions and I enjoyed it thoroughly. 🙂

Well everything we’re hearing is saying Bowen is worth or valued at 20M. I would definitely say we would get 10M for Gayle but he is definitely worth 8M to a championship side.

Wasnt he touted as a straight swap for the 16M Rondon only 4-5 months ago? I could be wrong there though.
