Newcastle Holding Strong In 1-1 First Half Against Reigning Champions

Newcastle started the game well enough as Manchester City held the lion’s share of possession. However, the defense held their shape well and were hard to break down.

Newcastle were again wasteful on the counter in the first 20 minutes though they showed signs of a threat, primarily through Allan Saint-Maximin.

In the 22nd minute, Manchester City made their breakthrough. It was a bit unlucky for Newcastle as the ball was deflected a few times in the box and fell to Raheem Sterling, who sublimely put the ball past Dubravka.

Just when it looked like hope was dwindling, Newcastle responded only a few minutes later. Miguel Almiron from the right played a nice back pass to Jetro Willems in the box. The wing-back had loads of space to settle himself, and he struck the ball cleanly with his right foot into the bottom corner. It was a beautiful goal for Willems and Miguel’s first assist for Newcastle.

Newcastle held firm to close the half, but Sterling is causing problems and looks like he has another goal in him. Bruce also needs to get more from Joelinton, who started decently but has been very poor to close the first half. With Andy Carroll out, Gayle would be the only option to replace the Brazilian.

We need the lads to dig deep and try to keep Manchester City at bay in the second half. We can get a result in this game which looks to have a few more goals in it.

Is Joelinton banging the goals in during training? What is doing to stay in this team? What does he bring to our play? It’s like we’re playing with ten men every week. I think it’s time for Gayle to get a solid 45 minute run out. He must be sitting there wondering how Joel is starting ahead of him.

I’m not saying Gayle is Premier League quality, but he’s got to be better than Joelinton. Maybe it’s the big price tag that he came with and pressure to make it look like he was worth the money? I can’t see him ever doing anything to make him look Iike a forty million quid striker!

I would move ASM up top and when we are deep defending ask him to drift into the channels so when the defenders get the ball they have a quick out. At the moment hitting Joelinton and it sticking is not very often.

Joelinton looked Like he had some scoring instinct when he first arrived I think the lad is running on empty in terms of Confidence. Rather than persisting I would let him sit and bring him through slowly building it back up

Joelinton is asked to play on his own again 3-4 man city players. Instead of complaining about him, just watch everytime he gets thr ball there isnt a teammate within 10 yards of him.

Now imagine how frustrated youd feel when you have to try beat 3-4 players just to bring another team mate in to the move.

How do people not see this. The problem IS BRUCE NOT JOELINTON. but continue to ruin him by jeering him everytime the INEVITABLE happens and he loses the ball.

Miggy also looks decent on the left, he should alternate with asm every 10 mins to confuse City. Because he can certainly play on the left.

Irish I agree he is isolated but that doesn’t stop him from doing the easy things right which he is not at the moment e.g losing the ball when under little pressure

Nufc-83 well said. For a big lad, he doesn’t even hold the ball up very well. When Big Andy comes on he’s like a brick wall. Defenders just bounce off him. Joelinton can’t even impose himself physically to allow the players behind him to catch up and join in.

Joelinton static again when Maximin was out wide. Waiting for the ball to come to him. You would think he was joined at the hip with the Man City CB.

He’s not isolated, bogus argument. All target men playing that role, some deal with it better than others. Joelinton doesn’t work hard enough and plays like a player who thinks he’s technically better than he is.

Gayle is better – he scores a goal in the PL roughly every 350 mins throughout his career. ST instinct and movement on the shoulder and down the channels.

Has great understanding with Shelvey too.

Why is Shelvey shooting there ffs?

83 but look how many City players are ALWAYS swarming him. He gets swarmed like no other player. Even when he wins it he has no kind near him to poke it to.

Another player beside him and City just cant swarm him as effectively because the can stay close and work together BUT HE HAS NO ONE!

Almiron has got zero composure in the final third. I love the lad but he’s under so much pressure to get that first goal that his decision making is totally off. Still, I’m over the moon he’s got an assist today.

He gets swarmed because he takes forever to control it and then make a pass.

He’s no better than Joselu, who at least got into scoring positions even if he fluffed them.

I actually hope City don’t go down to ten men here. When that happens the team who lose a player tend to double their efforts and sometimes get better. I can see City being tougher to beat with a disadvantage.
