Newcastle Holding Strong In 1-1 First Half Against Reigning Champions

Newcastle started the game well enough as Manchester City held the lion’s share of possession. However, the defense held their shape well and were hard to break down.

Newcastle were again wasteful on the counter in the first 20 minutes though they showed signs of a threat, primarily through Allan Saint-Maximin.

In the 22nd minute, Manchester City made their breakthrough. It was a bit unlucky for Newcastle as the ball was deflected a few times in the box and fell to Raheem Sterling, who sublimely put the ball past Dubravka.

Just when it looked like hope was dwindling, Newcastle responded only a few minutes later. Miguel Almiron from the right played a nice back pass to Jetro Willems in the box. The wing-back had loads of space to settle himself, and he struck the ball cleanly with his right foot into the bottom corner. It was a beautiful goal for Willems and Miguel’s first assist for Newcastle.

Newcastle held firm to close the half, but Sterling is causing problems and looks like he has another goal in him. Bruce also needs to get more from Joelinton, who started decently but has been very poor to close the first half. With Andy Carroll out, Gayle would be the only option to replace the Brazilian.

We need the lads to dig deep and try to keep Manchester City at bay in the second half. We can get a result in this game which looks to have a few more goals in it.

City play a very high defensive line.

Gayle seems a lit faster than the day he came on for his first match over a month ago. But straight away I notice were gonna miss Joelintons height. But at least Bruce made a change early enough to matter.

Ancient C – exactly. Fresh legs with Gayle. We could catch them out at the back if ASM breaks down the wing and Gayle goes with him.

ASM isn’t getting back now. Willems overloaded, might be time for Atsu.

If Gayle offers nothing then he’ll have the same impact as Linton this game who has had a poor game even by his standards – he’s just not a striker who can hold the ball up, if that’s how Bruce is going to play he needs to stop playing Linton in that position

Shelvey is doing nothing now. Replace him for one of the Longstaffs.

Gayle has already done more than Joelinton with one touch

Gayle has won two balls in the few minutes he’s been on so far and knocked it on for a teammate. That’s more than Joelinton did in seventy minutes!

I’m worried about corners now we have no Joelinton to defend headers.

ASM now needs to come off. That was the last bit of his legs. Would usually fly past Walker.

Amazing goal mind. Not many players in the world can finish like that lad. If we had to concede a goal, at least it was a cracker.

Ah well, we need 6 from our next 4 and It’ll still be ok. 21pts at the halfway stage. Then we need to get Bowen and a ST in January. Even if it’s Rondon back on loan for a couple of months during the China off-season.

Well we didn’t get bladdered today. And we played quite canny too. Had the odd chance but spent most of the game defending, which we did well against class players. Disappointed not to get a point obviously but not annoyed like I was after the Villa game.

Rob – I’ll rewatch the game later and keep an eye out for what you’re saying about Joelinton. Mind, with what you’re saying about Joelinton’s forward play, I’m wondering if you’re watching the same game too.
