Newcastle started the game well enough as Manchester City held the lion’s share of possession. However, the defense held their shape well and were hard to break down.
Newcastle were again wasteful on the counter in the first 20 minutes though they showed signs of a threat, primarily through Allan Saint-Maximin.
In the 22nd minute, Manchester City made their breakthrough. It was a bit unlucky for Newcastle as the ball was deflected a few times in the box and fell to Raheem Sterling, who sublimely put the ball past Dubravka.
Just when it looked like hope was dwindling, Newcastle responded only a few minutes later. Miguel Almiron from the right played a nice back pass to Jetro Willems in the box. The wing-back had loads of space to settle himself, and he struck the ball cleanly with his right foot into the bottom corner. It was a beautiful goal for Willems and Miguel’s first assist for Newcastle.
Newcastle held firm to close the half, but Sterling is causing problems and looks like he has another goal in him. Bruce also needs to get more from Joelinton, who started decently but has been very poor to close the first half. With Andy Carroll out, Gayle would be the only option to replace the Brazilian.
We need the lads to dig deep and try to keep Manchester City at bay in the second half. We can get a result in this game which looks to have a few more goals in it.

Comment #84Love the way that Shelvey used the spin on the ball as it was moving to get the needed curl.

Comment #85Hahahaha Yessss!!!! What a comeback yet again!!! Hahaha get in!!! Shelvey playing one of his best games for us today. After I slated him last match he has done me proud in this one. And ran his socks off too which has surprised me. Take a bow son.

🙂
Amazing spirit shown to hit straight back twice and throughout the match we never let up. Never any nervous moments or slacking off where the goal was under seige and a goal looked inevitable. Took a cracker to get them back in front, but then Shelvey served one up for us.
Very enjoyable watch.
6pts from the next 4 at least and we’re doing alright with some January business to do.
MOTM between Willems, Shelvey and Manquillo.

Comment #104Shelvey so good, ran all over the pitch, set up our limited attacking play and a great goal.
Really great shift from the lads. Notable mentions for Willems (sign this lad up), Manquillo (should not lose his spot from here, great work from Bruce bringing him in over Krafth), Fernandez (he is an absolute monster of a defender)
Mom – Shelvey, he had it all, desperation around the box and closing down as good as anyone

Comment #109It’s far too early to suck shelvey off yet as he often has 1 decent game followed by a number of god awful ones. Let’s hope that’s not the case. If he can start getting himself up the pitch rather than playing so deep he can definitely have a major impact.

Comment #110If Shelvey can keep that level up, that concentration and energy he can be essential. Just needs to iron out some of his habits.
Never been so torn on a player. I picked him as my predicted player of the season 3 of the last 4 seasons, but I also admit how much of a liability he can be. Just has to play in the same vein as today, finally realise his potential and not think he can occasionally coast.

Comment #111City can’t defend. I’ve said it before but that was Peps biggest mistake EVER getting rid of a 31 year old Kompany. Yet he keeps a 34 year old Fernandinho playing in MIDFIELD. Pep has lost the plot. Title race is over.

Comment #113Wow, what a difference to villa. chalk and cheese, very brave and gutsy performance today. Manquillo should stay in, shelvey covered the ground today, almiron might push on now and we just have to get Willems signed up. Credit where it’s due to bruce today.

Comment #116What a great match and we can relax now after that. Saint-Maximin, Shelvey, Manquillo, Willems, Fernandez all up there for man of the match. Hard to pick. I think I have to go with Shelvey after a lung-busting display and the leveller for us to nick a valuable and well deserved point.

Comment #117Williems was great, Manquillo was great, Miggy was the most effective I’ve seen him all season, but I think MOTM has to go to Dubs, just edged it.

Comment #119What is with you deluded people the performance was garbage why do you go on like it was a sensational game it was mediocre from city and woeful from nufc 2 class goals granted the other 89 minutes was dross
This was another point to help the relegation fight that’s all
The falsehood that nufc fans sorry that’s unfair you old farts on here somehow know anything about football spells it out with your ridiculous comments
NUFC are still relegation candidates Steve Bruce is still a poor manager and I wish all the other teams supporters in the epl could read your comments on nufc performances
They would render you ga ga
