Newcastle went down 0-1 on a first minute Sergio Aguero goal last season against Manchester City. They triumphantly fought their way back to claim the full three points behind two second half goals from Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie.
All three goal scorers from that game will be missing in this one with Aguero and Ritchie out injured and Rondon with Rafa Benitez in China. So Newcastle will need some other heroes today if they are to pull off another massive upset at St James Park.
Coming off the back of the dismal display on Monday, expectations are very low for the Magpies to get anything other than a hammering today.
However, Alan Shearer has given Newcastle fans a sliver of hope by identifying some positives for the Magpies. Here is a clip of Alan speaking about today’s match at St James Park.

The positives for Newcastle are that both Sergio Aguero and Aymeric Laporte are out through injury. Aguero is the big one since he scores for fun against us.
The other thing in Newcastle’s favor is that Manchester City played in the Champions League on Tuesday. While the match was at home, they only managed a 1-1 draw against Shaktar Donetsk.
Finally, the early kickoff is something that Shearer thinks could help Newcastle.
Alan also believes that Newcastle can improve from the performance against Aston Villa. While he agrees it will be a tough game, Shearer says the lads can come away with a result if they are at their best.

Comment #45“Sorry but putting benitez in the same line as keegan as a club legend is pretty ridiculous.”
That would be why my cousin cancelled his ST when Rafa left. Er, hang on…

Comment #46“you learnt me nowt” sigh. Let’s leave it there geordietom. It started off with constructive criticism then ended with the one thing worse than “grammar police” – a rant from an enraged “kids are starving in Africa you know” rager.
On with the win against city then!!!!

Well, I have to admit I’m surprised by that. I expected a greater number of changes. Schar is still only on the bench, with Dummett continuing at centre-back in the 3. No changes in midfield either – &, as Bruce confirmed yesterday, the front 3 remains unchanged. #nufc

Comment #52One thing I’ll hand to Bruce though – it’s nice to hear a Newcastle manager say we have to be absolutely at “wor best” against Man City ha ha.
I fancy us to bog them down to a draw they aren’t flying like they were when we tripped them up last year.

Comment #54Ron your cousins choice is irrelevant. Bit like your yourself. You dole out “legendary” accolades easily. Rafa arrrives to a mess. Plays highly conservative football in two six pointers. Relegated. Promoted with a seriously talented team in championship terms. Stabilises us as a lower mid table team, not assisted by a crap owner. Leaves for money to go to a team nobody has ever heard of. nufc legend? My backside.
