Who Was Newcastle’s Man Of The Match Against Manchester City?

It was a terrific result this afternoon as Newcastle were able to rescue a point despite going down twice to Manchester City. Each time the lads went down the response was swift and punishing.

It was a terrific goal from Jetro Willems just minutes after Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the visitors. After a goal of the season contender from Kevin De Bruyne, Jonjo Shelvey responded with a blast from outside the box of his own.

Allan Saint-Maximin was again our main threat as he tried to create chances on the break. We also thought Isaac Hayden was excellent in the midfield as he helped shield the back three who were under constant pressure.

Probably the most crucial performance was that of Martin Dubravka in goal. The Slovakian was at the top of his game as he made some top drawer saves to keep Newcastle close.

Steve Bruce also deserves some credit for instilling belief in the lads. He stuck with the team that had gotten the wins over the past month and it paid dividends today.

Who Was Newcastle's Man Of The Match Against Manchester City?

  • Martin Dubravka (33%, 354 )
  • Jonjo Shelvey (18%, 191 )
  • Jetro Willems (15%, 163 )
  • Federico Fernandez (12%, 132 )
  • A. Saint-Maximin (7%, 76 )
  • Miguel Almiron (6%, 60 )
  • Isaac Hayden (4%, 47 )
  • Javier Manquillo (2%, 17 )
  • Joelinton (1%, 11 )
  • Ciaran Clark (1%, 9 )
  • Christian Atsu (1%, 7 )
  • Paul Dummett (0%, 3 )

But 83 did you not notice Gayle was asked to play in different position to Joelinton. And did you not notice that soon as Gayle came on he had the other 2 forwards right up beside him for the full 20 min. Yet Gayle was still anonymous.

I don’t think Joelinton is anything special and I think he was poor today, but my whole point is there are reasons why he is poor, its because hes alone and asked to do stuff he just cant do.

The minute gayle comes on he gets 2 players right up beside him for support, but Bruce won’t do the same for Joelinton. Joe was bad I’m not denying that, but it’s not him or his desire that is the cause, its 100% how Bruce is playing him.

Difficult to choose, we hardly had the ball. Shelvey, apart from two wasted free kicks, did alright, great goal. Willems had another decent game. Hayden was all action, stole the ball from them the most along with Fernandez. Clarke, solid display.

Most impressive players: Almiron, tireless runner with close control and an assist. ASM just puts a smile on your face.

Still, giving MOM to Dubravka. 23 chances, they had. He kept us in it.

Aye and Gayle has a goal every 4 matches in the PL when you add up his minutes. Joleinton is on one in 14 and doesn’t look like scoring. Joselu was more dangerous.

I have been so impressed with Willems. He has made a noticable difference on the left and has offered something going forward too. He is better than anyone else we have in that position – all the others are a compromise to some extent. – whereas he looks solid defensively but also great going forward. Today, the main threat from City came down our right side and that is no coincidence. It would be pure lunacy to not sign him up. He and Maxi have a good partnership. I don’t know why Frankfurt did not like in him or what the situation is (maybe a personal falling out), but we need him permanently.
Great credit due to Manquillo too, tioday. Stirling was kept pretty quiet.

Off tack but Ashley seems to have the idea that buying players without the input of the manager/ head coach is ok presuming that the player will be coached into fitting into the team.

We can see that his idea is completely flawed when we look at Joelinton, who clearly isn’t doing the business. So, that means either Joelinton can’t adapt and respond to training or the Bruce and his staff just aren’t up to the job.

Rafa told Ashley he didn’t see Joelinton being a good buy at £40m but Rafa was pushed and his advice ignored. So, to the big questions:

Is Joelinton not up to the job?

Or, is it that the scouting team got it wrong?

Or, is Bruce, Ashley’s head coach of choice, not up to the job of training Joelinton to fit in with other players playing to his instructions and set up?

Or could it be that Ashley’s royally screwed up – yet again?
