Newcastle were linked with a move for attacking midfielder Lovro Majer a couple of summers ago. There were reports in Italy that Newcastle and Sampdoria were vying it out for the Croatian under-21 international.
However, despite the interest, the player had his heart set on playing for Dinamo Zagreb, who completed a £2m deal for Majer from NK Lokomotiva in July of 2018.
Majer, who’ll be 22 next month, was featured earlier this season in 90min’s article on the seven best players not playing Europe’s top five leagues along with his teammate Dani Olmo.
Lovro Majer– do Newcastle still hold an interest in playmaker
The playmaker could prove to be a shrewd signing for Newcastle as he fits the club’s profile being a youngster with a lot of room to blossom.
He’ll add a playmaking element to the attacking third that Newcastle lack at the moment. With him being born after January 1st, 1998 he’ll also not eat up a squad place so Newcastle would not have to offload any players to bring Majer in.
The player has some huge potential which he is still yet to realize and has been linked with the likes of Manchester City, Celtic, and Everton over the past few years.
Majer has been thwarted somewhat at Dinamo Zagreb due to the form of teammates Dani Olmo and Luka Ivanusec but is still a player who has caught the eye when he’s played. He’s made 12 appearances with 4 assists this season.
With Newcastle being so closely linked to the player just 18 months ago, we have to wonder if the club is still tracking him as a potential target.
