Bruce Confirms Two In Contention But Still Too Soon For Star Defender

Steve Bruce has given his press conference this morning. With four players missing from last weekend’s match, he gave an update on the injury situation. Matt Ritchie and Jamaal Lascelles are long-term injuries; however Andy Carroll and DeAndre Yedlin were late omissions on Saturday.

Both Carroll and Yedlin were seen training yesterday. Bruce has confirmed that if they come through today’s training session ok, they will be in contention for tomorrow’s match.

However, he is taking it very cautiously with center-back Florian Lejeune. He’s all but ruled the Frenchman out for the time being. Ciaran Kelly has also tweeted what Bruce had to say about the 28-year-old.

We think this is sensible from Steve Bruce. There is no reason to bring Florian Lejeune back at the moment with such depth at his position. It was almost two months ago that injury analyst Ben Dinnery tweeted about the risk of players returning from cruciate ligament injuries.

This is what he said at the time in response to Chris Waugh’s article in the Athletic.

If Bruce was to wait the full nine months as Dinnery suggests is best, that would be the first week of January. Lejeune’s injury occurred on April 6th at Crystal Palace.
