Newcastle came out in their green away strips for the first time since preseason. We have to say they look very nice indeed.
Even better was the first goal by Allan Saint-Maximin, who bullied and outleapt Blades defender Chris Basham for the header that put Newcastle in front.
After that, it was all Sheffield United as Newcastle decided to sit deep and let the hosts come at them.
Sheffield United actually had the better chances in the first 20 minutes, but Martin Dubravka came through big time.
He made a terrific save on a Javier Manquillo deflection that came whipping at him in the 5th minute.
In the 10th, it was the Slovakian to the rescue again. On a corner he made another crucial save from a Billy Sharp effort.
Then in the 15th minute, it was the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Andy Carroll won the ball deep in the Sheffield area and laid a pass to Javier Manquillo.
The Spaniard whipped in a very dangerous cross. Allan Saint-Maximin jumped over Chris Basham to head the ball into the bottom corner.
The goal came against the run of play as Sheffield United were starting to ask questions of Newcastle.
They almost leveled within three minutes, but Martin Dubravka made another world-class save on an Oli McBurnie header.
We didn’t like the way Newcastle sat way too deep after scoring. They allowed Sheffield United too much space, and Bruce needs to put that right during half-time.
He just can’t have eleven men behind the ball for the second half or it will be inviting trouble.
