Newcastle Again Too Passive But Up 0-1 At The Half

Newcastle came out in their green away strips for the first time since preseason. We have to say they look very nice indeed.

Even better was the first goal by Allan Saint-Maximin, who bullied and outleapt Blades defender Chris Basham for the header that put Newcastle in front.

After that, it was all Sheffield United as Newcastle decided to sit deep and let the hosts come at them.

Sheffield United actually had the better chances in the first 20 minutes, but Martin Dubravka came through big time.

He made a terrific save on a Javier Manquillo deflection that came whipping at him in the 5th minute.

In the 10th, it was the Slovakian to the rescue again. On a corner he made another crucial save from a Billy Sharp effort.

Then in the 15th minute, it was the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Andy Carroll won the ball deep in the Sheffield area and laid a pass to Javier Manquillo.

The Spaniard whipped in a very dangerous cross. Allan Saint-Maximin jumped over Chris Basham to head the ball into the bottom corner.

The goal came against the run of play as Sheffield United were starting to ask questions of Newcastle.

They almost leveled within three minutes, but Martin Dubravka made another world-class save on an Oli McBurnie header.

We didn’t like the way Newcastle sat way too deep after scoring. They allowed Sheffield United too much space, and Bruce needs to put that right during half-time.

He just can’t have eleven men behind the ball for the second half or it will be inviting trouble.

Wheres your fair and balanced critique of our surrendering of possession to a newly promoted side?

Or is the excitement of being in the Oposition half for 3 minutes per half to much for you to take.

Come on post something, I need a laugh.

I’m almost sure JJ has completed more passes backward than forward

We’re dominating them with 25% possession then. Durable keeping them at bay. Crazy idea thinking Gayle would be a solution there’s a very good reason Carroll is playing in this game when we are playing mostly in our box and taking crosses. Gayle would be desperately lonely until they tire a bit and we can spread forward.

Shelves is a big problem for the team in this formation, simply no engine and can’t run, so everyone just drops deep and allows teams to have the ball with no press. If we stay up it will be a miracle. Long staff for Jonjo sharpish

There is no way Carroll will last 90 mins but who does he bring on Joelinton or Gayle? Will also be happier when Lejeune and Schar are back as we look vulnerable from set pieces. Perhaps Longstaff will pep up the engine room in the second half. Really need to get something out of this game preferably three points.

Carroll is clearly putting more effort in than Joseluinton. Just closing down players as an example.
Plain for any football connoisseur to see.

They are getting too many crosses in – if it continues they’ll score.

Carroll upfront is turning into a disaster
We cannot survive another 45 minutes not pressing from the front
Get him off and bring back Linton

Ha ha shelves the problem when nobody is running forward? Gour problem here is sideways passers like harden and dropping back into our box while the defenders hoof it aimlessly to their midfielders. You need someone to take the pressure off shelvey so he doesn’t have to get pegged back and if nobody is getting forward on the wings then there’s nobody to let the ball out to. What game are you watching? 🙂

Lucky to be 1-0. Our tactics are horrible, back to kicking the ball wherever hoping it goes to one of our players.

The only problem is Carroll’s lack of mobility. Hurting us defensively as much as he has cleared a few set-pieces. A change for one of the others and it’ll be a more even match. For me Gayle to give them something to worry about in the channels and on the shoulder would change the dynamic best. Would be able to press more effectively too which we really need for the integrity of our shape.

AC is playing as an extra defender at the moment and doing a good job of it, but bloody annoying as he should be up front creating chances. But as someone just said we have to be much better second, surely!

An awful game to be watching. Everyone looks slow and just happy to defend. How on earth can every other team play half decent football and we’re just sitting back on a one nil lead, we haven’t even tried to counter once since scoring

Jenas just stated what every one including stevie wonder can see
Carroll is not mobile enough to play the lone striker role
Especially when we are defending so deep

I hope people are developing better appreciation for the hardwork Joelinton puts in
playing as a striker in an innately defensive side

Carroll is not on the pitch to be an extra defender!
He is there to be a striker
    And defend from the front
Neither of which he is doing right now

It’s going to be difficult keeping the game at 1:0.

Giving away so much possession almost always leads to a defeat.

If we are going to play like this we need an outlet to Atleast maybe break, but we aren’t even attempting to keep the ball or break, just hoof it to them and prepare for the next attack even when we had a second to think and pick a pass

A bit of a thankless and forlorn task leading our line. I think Carroll, Joelinton, Gayle and Muto might get together and withdraw their labour if we don’t improve their working conditions.

Another challenge against one of our lads that goes unpunished? Sounds about right. Yet when one of our lot does the same thing the refs are falling over themselves to get us down to ten men. What a joke.
