Well that was something, wasn’t it? Just 26% possession and 6 shots, but Newcastle take all the spoils by winning 0-2 at Bramall Lane.
We can thank some timely defending and a superb performance by Martin Dubravka for that win and a clean sheet to boot.
Allan Saint-Maximin showed his power as he overpowered former Newcastle youth product, Chris Basham, to get on a Javier Manquillo cross in the first half. I bet Allan didn’t think his debut goal would be anything like that.
Then in the second half, it was borderline whimsical as Jonjo Shelvey was set free from an Andy Carroll flick on. The big man was flagged offside but referee Stuart Atwell did not blow his whistle.
Jonjo, with the cool head, kept playing as Sheffield United players just stopped. He slotted it past a complacent Dean Henderson. VAR correctly ruled Carroll onside, so it was Jonjo’s 4th of the season. We love the little head tap Jonjo made with his finger after he scored.
While it was not a rousing performance, we’ll take the three points all day long. Newcastle move into 11th place with 19 points as they hand Sheffield United their first defeat since September.
