Bruce Touches On Two Key Moments In Yesterday’s Win

It was two goals against the run of play that secured three points for Newcastle on Thursday. The first one was a debut goal by 22-year-old Allan Saint-Maximin, who seemed to pierce the sky to connect with a Javier Manquillo cross.

The powerful winger skyed over the 6’3″ Chris Basham to head the ball into the bottom corner and break the stalemate. It was a timely goal as Sheffield United were starting to dominate the proceedings.

Steve Bruce spoke after the game about Allan Saint-Maximin’s debut goal.

The second was a moment of clarity in a cloud of confusion for captain Jonjo Shelvey. He kept his wits about him when the linesman flagged Andy Carroll offside, but the referee didn’t blow the whistle.

While Sheffield United’s players stopped once the flag was raised, Jonjo sauntered down the pitch and passed the ball past Dean Henderson into the goal.

The 27-year-old immediately looked over the Newcastle bench and tapped his head. The goal ended up counting, and Jonjo should get the plaudits for understanding the situation entirely.

Steve Bruce also touched on Shelvey’s controversial goal after the game.

Jonjo also said after the match that the referee told the players to continue playing if the whistle wasn’t blown. So it’s kudos to Jonjo for that cerebral passage of play in such uncertain circumstances.

Who Was The Man Of The Match At Sheffield United?

  • Martin Dubravka (75%, 1,782 )
  • Jonjo Shelvey (6%, 132 )
  • Federico Fernandez (5%, 121 )
  • A. Saint-Maximin (5%, 108 )
  • Andy Carroll (3%, 68 )
  • Ciaran Clark (2%, 59 )
  • Javier Manquillo (2%, 56 )
  • Isaac Hayden (1%, 28 )
  • Miguel Almiron (1%, 12 )
  • Joelinton (0%, 6 )

my favourite moment was Shelvey tapping his head when everybody thought it was offside. other than that it was dubravka vs sheff utd. I think their bubbles burst and theyll slide down now.they have too many players inthe squad that were league one two years ago which makes it all the more horrible we only got 25% possession and put 9 men behind the ball.

What a fantastic result last night. ASM gets his first goal; Shelvey shows his experience; and we take home all 3 points! Sheffield must be wondering what on earth just happened to them. Perfect timing too. I’m about to make the 13,000 km journey to SJP to watch the Southampton game with my son and his mates. Can’t wait!!!! See you in the Toon on Sunday – HWTL

joelinton looked a bit better. hes ok when hes running at people. two decent runs near the end although they ultimately fizzled out. at other clubs he would expect to have runners on either side to lay it off. both times he was alone so had no choice but to run into three defenders. although he doesnt help himself, he was hardly busting a gut.to support almiron near the end.

last season he played in a team that had very high possesion in the attacking third and he constantly had players around him to pick out. and even then he didnt score many. if carrolls starting now id like to see joelinton used on the wing or number ten. but this could mean switching formation. and I think bruce is too scared to change anything. as weve seen tonight theres no plan b. its 20% football and hope for some luck until January at least.

going back decades weve fared very well agsinst Southampton at home and very bad away. I think the long journey doesnt help the away team. ive won so many bets on this fixture. bruce cant park the bus against soton. it will play to their strengths and theyre on a little run now. we have better players than them in nearly every position so a draw at worst.

Lying seems to come naturally to the two I mentioned and they seem hell-bent on doing and saying what they believe will help their megalomaniac cause, no matter to whom they do or say it. Shown to have lived to the queen still hasn’t stopped one of ’em and the talk is that he’ll be at Workington for next year’s World’s Biggest Liar Competition.

Brighton looked really good again. They will end in the top ten. Hard to believe just six months ago they were playing worse football than us. Now theyre one of the more entertaining teams. Potter will go to a bigger team after them. Where will Bruce be heading?

More money to be made in China, OP. Rafa has shown that you can be a dud EPL manager, but it looks on the CV, and in their Sunday pub league standard competition that counts for a lot.

So, any positives from a deep defensive display with possession in the 20’s?

    Simple answer, plenty:

ASM scored a great goal, a forward finally scores!

Andy has reminded us that he’s also good at setting others up. BTW, SB, you read my posts, good on you for following my advice to start him 🙂

Dubravka is in form. Despite their good chances, it was evident he wasn’t letting anything through. Best game with us.

We play to our strengths. It’s ugly, I’m a football guy and I don’t like it. But that’s what one must do. Well, our defence is super strong and resilient. All those defenders deserve credit for the clean sheet. Fernandez is our best CB.

Our league position and points haul is our best in the last 5 seasons, that can be too be bad.

    And… I won 25 Euros.

I see a bit of autocorrect in the previous post but you get the idea.
