It was another outstanding result for Newcastle on Thursday as we secured the full three points against the in-form Sheffield United. It ended a run of seven unbeaten Premier league games for the Blades.
Our big win yesterday also was Sheffield United’s first defeat by more than one goal since a 3-0 loss to Middlesborough in August of 2018.
However, none of that could have been achieved without the performance of one man. That is goalkeeper Martin Dubravka who was absolutely superb at Bramall Lane.
With that performance, the 30-year-old has won our poll for Newcastle’s best player for the third straight match. Incidentally, Allan Saint-Maximin won three straight polls before Martin started his run.
This one was not even close as Dubravka is the runaway winner. Of the 2,388 total votes, he has collected 1,782 for 75%. Jonjo Shelvey gets second with Federico Fernandez getting third.
Martin generally makes the saves that keeps Newcastle in the game. That was never more evident than on Thursday night when Martin made some world-class stops early on.
Allan Saint-Maximin was able to get his debut goal against the run of play. That turned out to be the game-winner with Martin turning away everything Sheffield United threw at him.
It was his 65th straight start for Newcastle United. What a find the Slovakian has been.
