Newcastle redeemed themselves with a late surge spurred on by the appearance of Andy Carroll, who changed a dire affair into a full three points.
Newcastle came out after their poor first half by making one change with Fabian Schar coming in for Ciaran Clark. This was a positive move by Bruce as Newcastle relied too often on pumping the ball up the pitch.
However in the 52nd minute, Newcastle conceded a disgrace of a goal. Southampton center-back Jack Stephens punted a ball that cleared the Newcastle backline. Danny Ings ran onto and was able to hold off Fede Fernandez to beat Dubravka. Just an inexcusable goal to concede.
Newcastle brought Andy Carroll on for Joelinton in the 58th minute. It was an abject display from the Brazilian.
The Geordie made an immediate difference as he flicked on a ball to Allan Saint-Maximin, who Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg had to take down.
Newcastle then remembered that today was a game day. They started to ask questions of Southampton with Allan Saint-Maximin and Andy Carroll being the focal points.
In the 67th minute, Newcastle won a free-kick in a dangerous area. Shelvey tried to lob a ball to Andy Carroll at the back post but it was cleared. Carroll gathered the ball on the right and whipped in a wonderful cross which that man Jonjo Shelvey headed into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
After the goal, Southampton again put Newcastle under pressure thanks in part to Paul Dummett having to retreat down the tunnel to receive treatment for a blow to the jaw.
In the 84th minute, Steve Bruce brought Sean Longstaff back for his first appearance since his sending off against Wolves. He was on for Miguel Almiron.
Just like with Andy Carroll, Longstaff would play a part in a Newcastle goal. Sean Longstaff struck a bullet from outside the box that Southampton keeper couldn’t keep hold of. Federico Fernandez was there to take the spoils and give Newcastle the lead.
Newcastle saw out the game however, Allan Saint-Maximin went down with a hamstring injury so that is a big worry.
But it was a massive turnaround when Andy Carroll came on. It’s four wins in six and Newcastle are now in 10th place 2 points behind Manchester United. It is points over performance today but we’ll take that if we can get it.

Comment #3Massive blow that and was because he got carried away by the crowd and sprinted quicker than he ever has since he’s been here 94 mins into a match.
Silly.
Gritty win! Carroll > Joelinton every time. Loving the Shelvey/Carroll partnership that’s emerging.
Without ASM the winter is going to be harder than it would have been. So daft of him.
22pts. Another 4 from our next 2 needed.
Need to get Bowen or Fraser from Bournemouth in early Jan now as a matter of urgency.

Comment #5Why oh why does it take the opposition to score to spark us into life? AC’s enthusiasm rubs off on the rest of them and his defending was tremendous. Just hope Ashlie won’t think job done for another season and won’t give Bruce any money to spend in January. But we need to replace our No 9 who is a disgrace to all those who have worn that shirt previously.

Comment #6Willems and Schar got away with poor performances today. Joelinton isn’t a ST in any way shape or form. Night and day with Carroll. You can just sense in defenders when he is out there they’re very comfortable and don’t feel the least but threatened, unlike bug AC.

Comment #7Andy Carroll is more effective than Joelinton and he was £40m cheaper. He’s got better balance and ball distribution. I’d sack Joelinton. Just take the loss. Don’t understand why Bruce is desperate to keep Gayle. He hasn’t started him once. Get rid in sign someone else. Need a Loic Remy/Demba Ba type player.

Comment #8Credit to the defence as much as anything today, don’t think Dubs had to make a save in the second half, but the AC substitution made all of the difference, if he had been on for the whole game he’d be my MOM.

Comment #12Against the physical Burnley bruisers, with ASM likely out unless he was putting it on, it might be the time to see Joleinton in the LWF position with Carroll most probably starting as ST.

Comment #17Newcastle’s Federico Fernandez: “The three points mean a lot for us. Everyone is happy. We are working hard to keep our shape. We feel OK, we took our chances. Great points.
“We need to enjoy this period and build a winning mentality. You never know where we can arrive at the end of the season but we take it game-by-game.

Comment #18Joint 8th, a points away from European places?
Amazing.
Andy Carroll changed the game.
MOM? I’m going to give it to Dubravka, again, though he didn’t need to do as much. Close, in second, the big man.

Comment #20Villa stuffed by Leicester a good result for us too.
7pts clear of the dropzone.
Got to deal with a physical test next weekend against Wood, Barnes and co. Bunrley have a poor home record this season though.
Looking in a very healthy position. Right in the top-half pack.

Comment #23Steve Bruce is a genius. Honest.
We have three forwards who have scored TWO goals between them in 16 league games. Thats 48 games between the three of them and TWO goals. We should be sat on 5 points not 22.
An absolute genius.
We are a really bad team and todays performance was par for the course but we won again.
Almiron has no goals and no assists in about 25 games and Joe has one goal in 16 games. St somebody has one goal and hardly any assists.
The manager is a genius.Has any team ever done as well just relying on backs and one midfield player to carry the team. A genius.

Comment #25I was there today, last minute decision and wanted to see for first time our new players.
Impressed massively with Almiron, yes he hasn’t scored but brings so much to the team.
ASM – there is a player there, no doubt about it. Great worker and once he gets this season under his belt we will see more from him next year.
Joelinton – I cant see anything, seriously there is no way Mick Tait has sanctioned this signing as a scout. If we have spent £40 million on him Panarama need to look into the deal. Not his fault we paid this fee, but he is not a PL striker.
Dubs was class, great shot stopper but I would like to see him come for a few corners.
Andy Carroll was just a typical fan wearing a black and white shirt gave everything .
We won so that will do me.

Comment #28For everyone who was moaning when Rafa left and Bruce was appointed to replace him, it has to be noted that Bruce is doing far better than Rafa ever did at this point in the season.
2019-20 (Bruce): 22 points from 16 matches
2018-19 (Rafa): 13 points from 16 matches
2017-18 (Rafa): 15 points from 16 matches
