Football Insider are reporting that Newcastle are tracking Everton defender Mason Holgate.
The 23-year-old has broken into the Everton first-team with starts in their last seven league games after playing just 20 minutes in the league previously. He’s also started all three of Everton’s Carabao cup games.
Holgate was on loan for the second half of last season with West Bromwich Albion in the Championship. He became an instant hit making 19 starts, however it was at right-back that he was used primarily for the Baggies.
For Everton he’s been playing centrally with either Michael Keane or Yerry Mina as his partner with Djibril Sidibe as the right-back.
Mason Holgate– former England u-21 international on Newcastle’s radar
The report says that Holgate is valued at just £14m by Everton even though his contract doesn’t expire until 2022. While the former England u-21 international is just 6 feet tall, he’s strong in the tackle but his lack of height does make him vulnerable a bit in the air.
We’ve been linked with a ton of central defenders of late even though that is our deepest position with six quality players there.
We do think Newcastle want to bring in a young center-back in the summer. Fabian Schar will turn 28 in just over a week and that will leave just Jamaal Lascelles at 26 as the only one not closing in on, or over the age of 30.
Newcastle were linked with Holgate in 2015 when he played at Barnsley before joining Everton for around £1m in August of that year.
