Newcastle Again Tracking Versatile Everton Defender – Report

Football Insider are reporting that Newcastle are tracking Everton defender Mason Holgate.

The 23-year-old has broken into the Everton first-team with starts in their last seven league games after playing just 20 minutes in the league previously. He’s also started all three of Everton’s Carabao cup games.

Holgate was on loan for the second half of last season with West Bromwich Albion in the Championship. He became an instant hit making 19 starts, however it was at right-back that he was used primarily for the Baggies.

For Everton he’s been playing centrally with either Michael Keane or Yerry Mina as his partner with Djibril Sidibe as the right-back.

Mason Holgate– former England u-21 international on Newcastle’s radar

The report says that Holgate is valued at just £14m by Everton even though his contract doesn’t expire until 2022. While the former England u-21 international is just 6 feet tall, he’s strong in the tackle but his lack of height does make him vulnerable a bit in the air.

We’ve been linked with a ton of central defenders of late even though that is our deepest position with six quality players there.

We do think Newcastle want to bring in a young center-back in the summer. Fabian Schar will turn 28 in just over a week and that will leave just Jamaal Lascelles at 26 as the only one not closing in on, or over the age of 30.

Newcastle were linked with Holgate in 2015 when he played at Barnsley before joining Everton for around £1m in August of that year.

Wow, that bus caught me out!

I suppose that’s the reason we have squads of players, injuries are an ongoing problem for any team, we can still put a team out that’s more than capable of beating Burnley especially with Dubs in goal!

Be a shame if Jonjo is out but it would make sense not to play him if he is carrying an injury. He’d play on crutches I reckon if Brucie let him! 🙂

As for Holgate don’t see the need to bring him in, I’d prefer to see Kelland Watts (not sure when his loan ends) bought into the squad to let the yunguns see there is chances for them to step up. I’d also like to see Tom Allan in the match day squad this weekend.

Looks like Bills-Son is on tabloid autopilot. Ah, a working class hero is something to be. Some just have deeper pockets to fill the trough of the Mike Ashley ilk.

    Ki.
Plays when he feels like it. Probably on his way out.
The thing about getting players in is you have to get some out.
25 in squad on wage to go with it.
    Plus Savait and Colback.

This five have made little cotribution and they probs want them out.
Colback, Savait, Muto, Ki and Gayle.

Central defenders are in their prime in their late twenties and early thirties. Can’t see the point of buying a playing who won’t get a game assuming the existing squad members have contracts renewed. Spend the money elsewhere please…we know where.

So 22, you can’t think of ANYWHERE ELSE Ashley advertises his tat? Oldham Athletic changed their ground’s name in 2014 to Sports Direct Arena, on a five year deal that was extended to six.
It only just recently changed back to Boundary Park but has retained an advertising deal with the club.
Nobody likes Ashley, despite what you think, but he does advertise extensively throughout football and trying to claim we are his only advertising outlet doesn’t help your argument much.
Although as this was connected to football, I suppose you can be forgiven.

Gonna, be a massive miss if both St Max and Almiron are out for Saturday. Their runs are a major part of our attacks, even if they don’t score many or get many direct assists, they are usually involved in the goals somewhere along the way. Our pace on the break is our most powerful weapon; to lose both would be bordering on a disaster. That said, we can’t afford to take chances on Miggy with St Max definitely missing for a month/six weeks.
That would definitely ensure a run out wide for Jo, with Atsu on the other flank. Nowhere near as quick or skillful, we’ll just have to make the most of a bad situation.

It’ll be an interesting line up for sure
It’s almost certain we play 5 at the back but will need a bit of pace upfront, wouldn’t be too surprised to see a front 3 of Gayle, Atsu, Joelinton
My Fifa team for the weekend:
    Dubs
    Manquillo, Schar, Fede, Dummy, Willems
    S.longstaff, Hayden
    Atsu, Gayle, Joelinton

This weekend will be a good test for Brucies management skills and the squads capabilities.

I’d definitely start AC no matter what team is picked, they’ll be robust, so should we be.

If Almiron is out as well as ASM we’re probably going to just pack the defence more than ever and hope for a 0-0 draw – although ASM and Miggy don’t score or assist much they do get us up the field and gain us free kicks that our defenders can score from

I wouldnt pick Gayle to start, especially against a physical side like burnley, we’ll need carroll at both ends of the pitch.

Not sure why gayle is rated so highly, he is a championship player who isnt a goalscorer in PL, nor does he contribute anything if he’s not scoring

It’s good to see Florian Lejeune back into the mix, it’s not all doom and gloom just yet.

Migs and Shelvey have late fitness tests, I really want to see Joe on the wing in his preferred position and have big Andy up front hopefully on the end of some Joe crosses. Having both on the pitch would be good for free kicks and corners add in Florian with his height and Burnley may find that difficult to defend against the big three.

If Miggy and Shelvey are out I would use Matty Longstaff in Miggys position, with Joelinton in the Wide Left, and Sean Longstaff in Shelveys role. Start with Carroll up front, and keep Gayle or Muto on the bench.
