Striker’s Season Of Frustration Continues To Grow

Dwight Gayle had the perfect opportunity to rescue a point at Burnley yesterday. Joelinton delivered him a flawless ball as he closed in on the Burnley goal. However, Dwight pushed it wide when it would have been easier to have scored.

It could have been Dwight’s shining moment in a season of frustration propelling himself into the conversation as a starter next week against Crystal Palace.

However, Gayle couldn’t convert the golden chance, and Newcastle left Turf Moor empty-handed. The lads failed to do what they had done so well the past three matches, get the goals that counted despite not playing great.

Dwight Gayle hasn’t scored for Newcastle since the season finale against Chelsea in 2018. While that may seem like a long drought, it’s actually only just under an hour and a half on the pitch since he’s last scored in a Newcastle shirt.

His goal against Chelsea was scored in the 23rd minute and he was substituted for Joselu just after halftime. This season Dwight has only played 62 minutes of football in his five appearances. He was on loan at West Brom all of last season.

It’s been a frustrating time for Dwight since we were promoted back to the Premier League. He managed only 6 goals in our first season back despite starting 23 games in the league and twice in the FA Cup.

This season a calf injury kept him out all of pre-season and up until October. Despite Steve Bruce’s constant insistence that he rates the 29-year-old, he’s barely played since regaining his fitness.

It was an opportunity to change all of that on Saturday. However, his miss has just compounded the frustration he’s felt all season.

Who Was Newcastle's Best Player In Defeat At Burnley?

  • Javier Manquillo (34%, 257 )
  • Andy Carroll (29%, 217 )
  • Martin Dubravka (14%, 107 )
  • Federico Fernandez (6%, 43 )
  • Joelinton (4%, 31 )
  • Fabian Schar (3%, 26 )
  • Isaac Hayden (3%, 25 )
  • Paul Dummett (3%, 19 )
  • Jetro Willems (2%, 13 )
  • Sean Longstaff (1%, 9 )
  • Christian Atsu (1%, 8 )

I suppose we have to be gracious to poor Dwighty. Ring rusty TBF and I bet he would have given an arm to poke that ball in and give himself a shot at Big Bruce Stars.

Ketsbaia that may seem obvious to us but in the Ashley dimension you are trying to explain how infinity works.

Yar, we don’t sign older players. Made a mistake not keeping Diame and also should’ve gave Slimani a greater chance. Would rather have Slimani than Carroll or Joelinton. Slimani has pace. We made a mistake not signing Lee Hughes back in 2009. Would’ve done a job for us in the fizzy pop.

Man City racked up 24 fouls today in winning 0-3 away at Arsenal.
Last week I recall we racked up just 7 fouls away at Sheffield United.
Maybe if we were more street wise we could build on results.
Certainly the big clubs know how to break up the opposition’s attacking play while hitting them on the break with fast flowing passing.
    Shy bairns get nowt.

The thing is, you can have a fast striker like vardy or even vardy himself. You still need the players to find him and his runs. We don’t have that other than shelvey when he’s on form. Look at who vardy has at Leicester.

    BBS

    Great, just follow my instructions!

I want you to close your eyes and concentrate on your presence on the blog.

You are surrounded by fellow bloggers and friend.

Now start to extend your consciousness beyond the environs of the blog and keep this going until you have left it far behind.

Once you have achieved this just keep your consciousness expanding, keep it going and going and going.

You will come to the infinite barrier of no return through which you need to pass, keep going, going , going and pop.

For those not making this journey this is an audible pop which will reverberate up to and beyond infinity.

    OK one down, who’s next.

Aah toon22, let me explain infinity to you.

Apparently Perez is bench warming now, after a great start to his Leicester life.

Possibly needs a bit more time to settle in! It’s not easy moving to a new club for some players.

If you watch ManC a lot of their play is very simple passing which shouldn’t be beyond the capabilities our lads.

Of course it also depends on players being able to control the ball when it comes to them and not let it ricochet off them. Something most of lads are very capable of, the ricochet that is.

We are a bit slow in the middle of the park. We need a really good hardworking box to box central mid with a bit of pace, to keep up with Almiron and St Max, and get closer to Joelinton or Carroll. Just that one player would really significantly improve us and allow us to get on the ball further up the pitch.

I don’t suppose that has gone unnoticed at the club and getting one in is quite a tall order to be fair, because what team doesn’t need a player like that, other than the very best.

But money is there, so a proper attempt at getting the right calibre of player needs to be made. Once we’ve got him, we could then consider going 4 at the back and look to control the centre of the park in games, and get forward in greater numbers and ditch this sub 40% possession football.

He might give this side a go.
    ……………..Dubravka
    ..Scharr…Fede…Lejeune..Dummett.
    …………Hayden…Longstaff.
    ..Almiron……Shelvey……Joelinton.
    ………………….Carroll.

We really do need to show more in the final third, and that set up gives us an extra body up there and is still defensively solid.

I have been calling for a 4-2-3-1 for forever. Get Bowen in and when ASM comes back, what a 3 that could be with Almiron. Also possibly move Willems up in place of joelinton.
