Dwight Gayle had the perfect opportunity to rescue a point at Burnley yesterday. Joelinton delivered him a flawless ball as he closed in on the Burnley goal. However, Dwight pushed it wide when it would have been easier to have scored.
It could have been Dwight’s shining moment in a season of frustration propelling himself into the conversation as a starter next week against Crystal Palace.
However, Gayle couldn’t convert the golden chance, and Newcastle left Turf Moor empty-handed. The lads failed to do what they had done so well the past three matches, get the goals that counted despite not playing great.
Dwight Gayle hasn’t scored for Newcastle since the season finale against Chelsea in 2018. While that may seem like a long drought, it’s actually only just under an hour and a half on the pitch since he’s last scored in a Newcastle shirt.
His goal against Chelsea was scored in the 23rd minute and he was substituted for Joselu just after halftime. This season Dwight has only played 62 minutes of football in his five appearances. He was on loan at West Brom all of last season.
It’s been a frustrating time for Dwight since we were promoted back to the Premier League. He managed only 6 goals in our first season back despite starting 23 games in the league and twice in the FA Cup.
This season a calf injury kept him out all of pre-season and up until October. Despite Steve Bruce’s constant insistence that he rates the 29-year-old, he’s barely played since regaining his fitness.
It was an opportunity to change all of that on Saturday. However, his miss has just compounded the frustration he’s felt all season.
