Both Newcastle and Crystal Palace are facing an injury crisis ahead of Saturday’s match at St James Park. We were forced to field a patched-up side against Burnley with Joelinton on the left-wing and Isaac Hayden playing higher up the pitch in a more creative role.
We’ll find out more over the next few days about the availability of Ciaran Clark, Jonjo Shelvey, and Miguel Almiron. They are due to partake in tomorrow’s training session. If they come through unscathed, they could very well be declared fit for Crystal Palace.
The Eagles are facing their own injury crisis as they were missing six players in their 1-1 draw against Brighton on Monday.
The Shields Gazette have published some comments from Steve Bruce about the plights of the two teams entering into the weekend. This is some of what he had to say:
“Yes, I mean, we have been patched up and I saw Crystal Palace last night and watched that one and they were patched up as well.
“So, I think it is this particular time of year, games come thick and fast, injuries can be a little bit cruel to you.
“Certainly after looking at Crystal Palace and ourselves at the weekend, we were both dealt a bad deal.
“So hopefully we can get one or two fit and see how we are then.”
Crystal Palace were still able to rescue a point on Monday with a late goal from Wilfried Zaha. However, they had issues with Jairo Riedewald as a fill-in left-back and he had to be replaced at the half.
He was in for former Magpie Patrick Van Aanholt, who could return this weekend. Though it looks another former Newcastle player in Andros Townsend will not be able to make it.
This is what Roy Hodgson said about the timescale for some of his injured players.
“Patrick van Aanholt because it was a muscle injury, we’re hoping that might not be quite so long.
“But Jeffrey Schlupp is a long term injury, Andros Townsend is a long term injury, Gary Cahill has had a minor operation and it will be a relatively long term injury and Mamadou Sakho has got one more game of his suspension.”
From these comments, it appears as though Crystal Palace will still be missing a few players, though if they get van Aanholt back that would be a boost for them.
Hopefully, we will get the trio of Amiron, Clark, and Shelvey back and ready to go for Saturday. We’ll still be missing some key players, but having these three back will give Bruce a few more options than this past weekend.
