Contract Offer Unlikely For In-Form Defender – Report

A few days ago, there was a report that West Ham were readying a bid of £5m for right-back Javier Manquillo.

The report came amid interest from Crystal Palace and Brighton as well as the Hammers. With only 6 months remaining on his contract, a bid of £5m would be seen as a small windfall for a player who could leave in the summer for nothing.

Of course, the sticking point is that Manquillo has been stellar since coming back into the team 4 games ago. He’s played some of his best football for Newcastle in that time.

However, it could be that Newcastle will want to cash in on the 25-year-old next month. We are well stocked at the position with DeAndre Yedlin and Emil Krafth in the squad.

There’s even Jamie Sterry, who can be drafted in and added to the squad for the last six months of his Newcastle career if necessary.

Mark Douglas with the Chronicle thinks Newcastle will not offer Manquillo a new deal. He believes the club is looking at a summer overhaul and that Javier Manquillo is not in the future plans.

If this is accurate, then selling Manquillo next month may be in play. He was bought for £4.5m in the summer of 2017, so any amount to offset that or even make a profit on the right-back would be seen as good business by Newcastle.

The money could also be used to help strengthen other areas in which we are a bit short. Newcastle have some decisions to make next month with new contracts and outgoings. We also hope they are working on bringing another one or two into the team.

What Will Be The Result In Saturday's Match Against Crystal Palace?

  • Win (55%, 655 )
  • Draw (24%, 284 )
  • Loss (22%, 262 )

My thoughts, for what they’re worth, keep Manquillo and sell Krafth.

Jib @6 (previous): being on a yellow, you should be careful. You should seek Rafa’s advice. He brought around Shelvey; you never know he may even spare a moment for you.

If I can add my two pennorth to the percentages debate.

    There’s no such quantity as 160 %, 100% is a complete total.

ie If you offered to cut up your Greggs steak bake into portions totalling 130 % and said you’d give your mate the extra 30% you’d be offering him or her nothing.

No player can ever give more than 100% effort despite what managers might say, in fact 100% is probably impossible.

It’s a bit like the old Theosophical discussions about passing camels through the eyes of Angels a concept and nothing more.

EGB @4: you’re being too hard on Lindisfarne. Getting to a total of more than 100 shows the extent of confidence.

I’m thinking that the retention of Krafth and possible
sale of Manquillo signal Bruce eventually moving
away from wing-backs and installing his favoured
    4 – 4 – 2
which by the way should be better for Joelinton ASM and Miggy

I think that you’d agree that i wouldn’t be the first to leap to the defence of toon22, but i believe that the comment you keep picking him up on was intended as irony.

I would extend Manquillo and Fernandez’s contract. Both have done well for us and deserve to stay.
