It was a disappointing afternoon at Old Trafford on Boxing Day to be sure. There were few bright spots as we made far too many individuals errors that ended up gifting Manchester United goals.
We started brightly, however, and looked to have a decent plan to get a result. The counter-attack looked quite dangerous early but we again had trouble finishing our chances.
However, Matty Longstaff stepped up once again and took his chance very well, giving Newcastle a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Unfortunately, Newcastle didn’t keep the same intensity while Manchester United kicked into another gear.
In addition to Matty’s goal, we thought Joelinton had one of his better games in a Newcastle shirt. He did brilliantly to hold the ball up and tap it to Matty for his goal. It was the 23-year-old’s second assist this season.
He also linked up well with Dwight Gayle early in the game. The Brazilian again created a chance for Dwight that the poacher just didn’t take.
These two players are the ones who dominate our best player poll. For the second time this season, Matty Longstaff comes out on top. The 19-year-old easily won the poll when we beat Man United at home in October. For that game, he collected 57% of the vote.
This one is a whole lot tighter as he narrowly edges out Joelinton by just 17 votes. We hope to see Matty get more games in the second half of the season. He’s got something about him and has two goals in just four appearances this season.

Comment #2Very tough for the wingbacks, midfielders and forwards to go again after only 48 hours. The centre backs do a bit less running, so they can probably go again a bit more readily. Almiron was subbed on 60 and seems to have bundles energy so he may start.
We might easily see these 11 players start.

Comment #4Sterling has scored two goals, took the second well (although the keeper went down early) but he has been woeful on the pitch.
De Bryne is class mind, would love him in our team.
Not gonna happen

Comment #5I really do think Muto gets a run ahead of Gayle in this one. He runs around, has better technique and can finish. If we do continue with two up top, he really should be starting given tired legs and his pedigree.

Comment #20Munster I think the major problem with your anti – Rafa arguments is that it’s completely baffling, and I suspect I speak for many, that you are actually doing it at all and think it’s relevant. Why do you keep mentioning it in such detail like it has anything to do with things now? And why is it you think anyone cares? I don’t. Does anyone else? You’re sliding off your trolley.

Comment #22Got to say I would laugh my ar$e off if we signed anyone in Jan never mind this Everton guy at £45M.,
The amount on here, dougie pick of the pack, who have said we’ll never sign anyone because we look safe from relegation…
As KK once said..
I would love it, just love it, if we proved the screaming doomsters wrong.

Comment #23Muto was a strange buy considering we played one up top. If we play two from now on he should be given a chance to show his worth. Not sure how much say Rafa had in that one, just as Joel and St Max were lined up whether Rafa stayed or not. So much for that Ashley nonsense about the manager getting any player he wants, so long as the money’s there. Total codswallop.

Comment #24Wonder which Toffees team will turn up tomorrow
A big Dunc kick ass and protest team or Ancellotti’s attempt to change their style
Either way we need to do some damage with crosses into Andy Carroll and a couple of goals from him at least plus one from Miggy and one from JJ
4-0 to the Toon

Comment #26Mmm, I guess our cagey owner never did quite promise that level of control though, did he?
More along the lines of “he can have every last penny, and spend it all on one player if he likes. It’s up to him.”
Still wasn’t the actual case though.

Comment #37Tarquin it really had been good schooling you on how to look dispassionately at a managers work and not being afraid to voice an opinion that went against the flow. Not being star struck by a managers great work, and sweeping under the carpet the lesser stuff over his career. In the meantime you keep abusing SB, like the little bitchy populist you are. And keep sporting your red and white colours like a hard core nufc fan.

Comment #40Delighted for Aaron Hughes. Superb professional, and was probably quite underrated when he was here. It wqs a mistake selling him, and let him go so cheaply!
