Luke Edwards with the Telegraph is reporting that Steve Bruce wants to add three players next month for a second half-season push for a top ten finish.
However, the head coach is aware that to accomplish that lofty goal, he’ll need to offload Dwight Gayle, Ki Sung-yueng, and at least one more Magpie.
Some of the targets mentioned in the report are familiar, while a couple of new names have crept into the discussion.
Of course, the name most associated with a move to Newcastle is Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen. In the article, Bowen is called a realistic target who would like to join the Magpies next month.
The issue with the 23-year-old will be if they can pry him from Hull’s reluctant grip. We certainly expect that an attempt will be made for the prolific winger.
Two other names on Newcastle’s radar are Genk striker Mbwana Samatta and Burnley winger Dwight McNeil. Samatta is a player we’ve been linked with since the summer. While he has just turned 27 last week, he is a prolific scorer in Belgium and has a release clause of only £10m.
Dwight McNeil– promising young winger
Burnley’s Dwight McNeil is another player Newcastle have been tracking for quite some time. The 20-year-old would be a fantastic addition to our ranks. However, he’s likely to cost a lot more than the reported £20m we have available next month.
That could be where fees for outgoing players like Dwight Gayle would come into the picture. Newcastle will reportedly not part with the 29-year-old for less than £15m. However, they will likely find it very hard to find takers at that amount.
The Telegraph also names a couple of midfielders that Newcastle have not been linked to in a while. They are Chelsea’s Danny Drinkwater and Liverpool’s Adam Lallana.
Drinkwater is expected to be recalled from his loan spell at Burnley next month, where he’s only played twice. The report stated that Newcastle were hopeful of landing the 29-year-old on loan in January but that it is now looking unlikely.
Adam Lallana is a compelling case as he’s out of contract in the summer. Jurgen Klopp wants the 31-year-old to sign a 1-year extension so Liverpool won’t lose him for nothing.
However, Lallana may test the free-agent waters this summer, and Steve Bruce is said to be very interested in bringing him to Newcastle possibly even this winter. Whether Mike Ashley would be willing to offer a competitive deal seems to us to be very unlikely.
We just can’t see Newcastle bringing in 3 first-team players next month. Though we could see us making a run at Jarrod Bowen. Then if we can sell Dwight Gayle, Mbwana Samatta could be an excellent buy.
We really rate Dwight McNeil but just can’t see that happening next month though maybe we can make a move for him in the summer. As far as Danny Drinkwater or Adam Lallana, we just don’t see them coming through the door either.

Comment #1On that basis, Bruce is hoping for three inward transfers:
1 straight purchase
1 player in dependent on player(s) going out
1 loan player

Comment #2I’ll be very, very surprised if there is a permanent signing made in January. There’ll be, imo about five gone and a striker and CM brought in on loan, the striker will be an aged journeyman and the CM will be a young player we were going to bring in the summer.

I reckon transfers will depend on where we are mid to late Jan to see what happens regarding transfer activity.
We could easily lose 5 players if we can offload the dead wood. And Atsu and the likes need to follow suit.

Sounds like you’ve got Ashley’s approach off to a tee.
Do nowt ’till we’ve lost most if not all January games then do something as the window’s near closing. And as other clubs near the bottom strengthened and pick up points, we are drawn into the relegation mix.
All because Ashley likes to provide entertainment and an exciting end to the season for the free ST brigade and others who’ve looked in.

Comment #13Bruce won’t be accepted by some on here unless he shags Ashley’s missus whilst simultaneously revamping the training ground and spending 100 mill on two players. Oh and then he has to win the b*tch Tsunki a trophy. Rough gig.

Comment #15The narrative this season seems to be that “if somebody can improve us we’ll have a look” which imo is double speak for if there’s an absolute bargain (regardless of whether there is a pressing demand for that position) then they’ll act. If they don’t bring in a striker next month then what they’re saying is that there isn’t a striker that we could realistically go after that would improve us which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Comment #40Has any incoming transfer rumor turned correct in recent past other than those of Joelinton and Carroll? Those transfer “rumors” turned out correct because they were purposefully “leaked” by the ownership to publications they consider friendly just to keep an agitated fanbase interested. Reinforcements would only if ST sales figures remain depressed and we lose both of our next two EPL fixtures, I’d think.
