Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player In 1-1 Draw At Rochdale?

Well, for about 55 minutes, we were looking likely to get through to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with relative ease. While Newcastle failed to take their chances in the first half or craft any real opportunities early in the second, Martin Dubravka was yet to be tested in the Newcastle goal.

But it all changed as Rochdale grew into the game and started to craft some chances of their own. It was a first-half substitute in 17-year-old Luke Matheson, who made a massive difference for the hosts.

The youngster was able to shut down Christian Atsu, who was dominant in the first 30 minutes of the game. Matheson also was able to get in some lethal crosses in the second half. One of which led to Rochdale’s equalizer through 40-year-old Aaron Wilbraham, himself a second-half substitute.

Newcastle just didn’t take their chances in the first half. Both Joelinton and Muto had excellent opportunities to put this game away and failed to do so. Considering the competition, this was Joelinton’s worst display in a Newcastle shirt.

Our makeshift defense played well enough, considering it consisted of a left-back and defensive midfielder. They were put under pressure for the last 30 minutes and couldn’t keep the slim one-goal advantage.

Martin Dubravka made some game-saving stops, so it was a wise decision to keep him in goal. However, this just was not good enough. We dominated this game early and should have put this team away.

Miguel Almiron was the only one to take his chance and it was a superb finish. Unfortunately, he looks to have suffered a groin injury. The situation just gets worse for Newcastle.

Who Was Newcastle's Best Player In 1-1 Draw At Rochdale?

  • Martin Dubravka (26%, 428 )
  • Christian Atsu (15%, 255 )

  • Joelinton (6%, 96 )
  • Matty Longstaff (4%, 61 )
  • Matt Ritchie (2%, 37 )

  • Isaac Hayden (1%, 18 )
  • Sean Longstaff (1%, 15 )

Well, that was shite. Good to see Matt R back.
If we can’t beat a team like Rochdale then how are we going to compete against Wolves and Chelsea.

If we don’t get any players in Jan then I can see us come end of March, back in the relegation fight.

Munster my opinion of Joelinton is follows:

The lad is not a striker and never will be (so whoever thought that the case needs to be sent down the road). He has zero confidence at the moment and needs to be dropped and only considered going forward for a deeper supporting position. I wouldn’t bring him back in until we have a side playing with more confidence in general. He may not make the grade at Newcastle which will be a huge shame however I do feel he will go onto playing for decent team and get back to his old self in which he earns a strong reputation again.

What exactly don’t you agree with?

Rotherham had three substitutes so they played a total of thirteen outfield players – including a 16 yr old, a 17 yr old and a 40 yr old. Every one of those 13 players was better by a long way than Joelinton. Every one. He must have lost possession about 20 or 25 times – including the run up to their goal.

He should never play for NUFC again. I assume that the only reason that he wasn’t replaced by Sorensen in the last half hour was because SB was terrified of another injury.

Jesus christ that plank munster doesn’t half talk some shite.

Imagine not calling a manager of Rafa Benitez’ ilk World class.

Even regardless of what he has achieved elsewhere, he’s still been our must successful manager in years. One adored by fans because of his achievements here taking on a sinking ship and getting them promoted and making them a solid force in the Premier league all on a negative net spend.

But no, of course, he wasn’t even that good for us. He didn’t take us to top 6 so he’s not world class.

Shut your mouth man, I can feel my IQ going down just from reading your posts.

A lot of comments made about Joelinton this afternoon. I’d suggest he is not simply the target of the boo-boys. Although some of have said he’s the worst forward we’ve ever had, I’d doubt that – I’ve seen some terrible performers over the years. Though having said that, they’ve nearly all had some saving grace / skill you could refer to.

The mystery is what is his position, and what does he bring to the team?

He’s possibly a centre forward / No 10 / wide player who cannot hold the ball up / beat defenders with skill / head the ball / shoot. We’ve had him play alone, with a partner and with wide men in support

If someone including Bruce can identified a real strength he has, maybe we can get something out of him until we manage to sell on. At this moment in time I just can’t see it.

It’s also pointless venting at Bruce, two men have deliberately and with warped insightful calculation plotted this season out between them. Everything was going well, fans turning up and the team progressing but because it wasn’t being done their way they threw a spanner in the works and reverted to EXACTLY the same policy that got us relegated just a short three years ago. Why, just why would you do that???

I voted for Dubs again, if it weren’t for him we would be out of the cup, in fact , if it weren’t for his saves this season, I think we would be already bottom 3 of the premier league with around 10 points (if that) , Darlow would more than likely conceded more than one today so I’m pleased we risked Dubs to at least give us a chance at a draw

agree Small World about Joel. There is actually nothing there. What does he do? I have to say that was the worst CF performance I’ve seen in a while, doesn’t matter if he’s not a real striker, how difficult is it to hold up a ball, beat a defender, head, shoot? he shows no attributes and offers nothing. Either Brice has been told to play him or he’s flippin’ amazing in training!
To make matters worse and to give some perspective, Salah cost €42m and Mané £34m. Really makes you think.

Jail, as far as the slug is concerned, he buys the players, pays their wages they are all footballers who can play football so we should be alright, hopefully one or two will increase in value so they can be sold at a huge profit so he can continue with his zero spend running the club on a shoestring ethos, sell the club eventually for a massive profit since he’s already had more than he’s put into the club from free advertising, etc……job done

Joelinton lost the ball nearly in the opponents penalty area. WHat about the midfield and defense? Where were they? Where were the midfield and defense for the previous 2 chances that Rochdale made, including the Dubravka save, that had nothing to do with Joelinton?
Frankly, yes, Joelinton is struggling and is no centre forward. But for goodness sake, the overall second half performance is not down to Joelinton. We sat back and gave them possession and played the wrong way.

Basically Ashley and Charnley had a Volvo(XC60) with a few miles on it, ,not great to look at but not bad either, dependable if not spectacular and would have got you easily from A to B with a very good trade in value when it was time to upgrade. Ashley and Churnley didn’t like it so the took out the engine, got a new one and left it out in the rain for a couple of weeks before getting the groundsman to put it back in, they then took out the old leather seats and replaced them with the most expensive PVC on the planet, this is where we’re at!!!

RE:”Joelington shows no attributes and offers nothing”

Disagree there. He offers a lot as a wide forward.
The facts also disagree with you. For example:
According to Neil, “….. it should have two. Joelinton took an interception from Muto and drove through the Rochdale midfield. He cut to his left in the box but his left-footed shot went wide….”

That sounds like someone who just needs to recover his confidence in front of goal
    Not someone who offers nothing
    imho

Making him their scapegoat for everything wrong with the team

Joelinton makes Shola look like Drogba.
Whoever scouted this guy and advised to spend 40 million should be sacked immediately.
I wouldn’t have spent 4 million on him. He’s not quick.. he’s not strong.. his touch is average at best… but worst of all his work rate is poor.
People saying he isn’t a striker…. then why the hell did we offer him and he duly took the number 9 shirt…. he clearly did think of himself as a striker.
We are hands down by a country mile the worst team I’ve seen in the Premier League this season.
If we’re not relegated this season I’ll be absolutely amazed.

I’ll give you my take on Joelinton.

I’ve seen some good wins at home this season. Have said on here J/L, Almiron and ASM, I was able to support, due to their honest effort and commitment. I’m not out and out anti Joelinton. I think I can give a balanced view.

Firstly, he does not have a powerful shot. Or a good shot for that matter. Takes an age to get it away, which is important. Watch him warm up, those of you who go to games. In shooting practice he does not compare well with others.

Pace. Not slow. Does not I would say trouble/worry defenders with his pace.

Heading. Not good at judging the flight of the ball. Hence not good.

First touch. Not the best, but not terrible.

Knack of scoring. A skill impossible to analyse. You have it or you don’t. He does not.

Does not look particularly balanced at times.

Only hope. In a team with lots of possession and an attacking front 3 ( like Liverpool ) would he come into his own. I don’t think we will ever find out.

I don’t blame Joelinton for giving the ball away. What disappointed me was his response or lack of one in trying to regain possession.
The bloke is too slow in everything he does. Lackadaisical. Even his shots lack energy. There is an issue with him. He is lacking motivation. This is either his personality or he has a serious problem.

For what it’s worth, Joe may just need to start putting his laces through the ball and hitting it as hard as he can, when he places it, there is not enough power and often too easy for the keeper to save, he could do with a striking coach to guide him …..but the slug probably won’t pay for a decent one , maybe we need a Sheareresque coach, just to get him to keep his body shape ready to to move forwards quickly and anticipate where the ball might be in a couple of seconds rather than when it’s passed/cannons off someone.
