Our Player Ratings For 1-1 Draw At Molineux

This is the team Steve Bruce fielded at Molineux for Newcastle’s gritty 1-1 draw, including the three substitutions.

Here are our individual player ratings for the match.

Martin Dubravka – 9

  • Once again, Dubravka has secured points for Newcastle with some brilliant saves. It was against Wolves at home that Martin made an error that allowed Jonny to get an equalizer. At Molineux, he made up for it with some outstanding saves. Two of them, in particular, were amazing. His first-half save from a point-blank Raul Jimenez header was top-notch. Then he may have outdone even that one in the second half when he flung himself to block a Neto header that looked a sure goal.

Isaac Hayden – 7

  • Isaac played very well filling in at right wing-back with Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth, and DeAndre Yedlin all out with injuries. He didn’t do too much going forward but was outstanding preventing Wolves from attacking down his flank.

Fede Fernandez – 6

  • Fernandez again took the captain’s armband but struggled at times. He left Leander Dendoncker unmarked in the 14th minute. Allowed Jimenez to get to Traore’s cross that Dubravka made one of his world-class saves on. However, he did the job to help keep Wolves at bay in the second half.

Ciaran Clark – 8

  • Considering this was his first game in a month, this was an outstanding display from Clark. He was so composed, and his experience showed. He made a number of clearances and was our best defender.

Paul Dummett – n/a

  • Not enough time on the pitch to get a rating. Paul left in the 12th minute with another hamstring injury and was replaced by Florian Lejeune.

Jetro Willems – 6

  • Jetro again had trouble keeping up with Adama Traore but did better than in the home draw when both Traore and Doherty easily beat the Dutchman time and again. This time it was only on a few occasions, and Jetro improved as the game went on. He caused the interception that led to Almiron’s goal and subsequently put in a perfect cross to Dwight Gayle who got the ball to Almiron.

Matty Longstaff – 8

  • An excellent performance from the youngster who at times showed his inexperience. Matty Longstaff made a crucial clearance in the first minute of the second half on a Matt Doherty shot. He was a dynamo in the midfield and put in some crunching tackles, though some were a little late.

Sean Longstaff – 6

  • This was a big improvement from Sean, who had a lot of touches and played much better than he had recently. He made a wonderful pass to Willems on the first goal. Jetro caused the Wolves player to lose possession, and Sean quickly played Jetro down the left. The elder Longstaff launched a couple of long shots that were well off target when better options were available. However, it was a solid performance overall.

Joelinton – 5

  • Joelinton was more involved on the right before Dwight Gayle went off injured. He still didn’t manage a shot and does not do enough to get into the box when in possession. It wasn’t a terrible performance, but he’s still struggling to make any sort of impact for Newcastle.

Miguel Almiron – 9

  • This was one of Miguel’s best performances for Newcastle. His goal was another beauty. However, it was his commitment to the cause that was most impressive. He ran all day long, even tracking Adama Traore back to the byline. Almiron was also our biggest threat going forward. He always wanted the ball and seems so much more composed now than early in the season. His goal against Crystal Palace has done wonders for him.

Dwight Gayle – 7

  • Gayle was very lively before coming off in the 28th minute with a groin injury. He made an interception that fell to Miguel Almiron early in the game, but Miguel’s shot went wide. Dwight also did brilliantly to get the ball to a trailing Almiron on the goal. He was running the channels, and his movement cause Wolves a lot of problems. It was such a shame he went off. He seemed to have found his rhythm.

Florian Lejeune – 6

  • Florian came on for Paul Dummett in the 12th minute. Bruce was wise to move the Frenchman to the middle and have Clark on the left. It was a tidy performance from the Frenchman who looked a lot better with a week and a half of rest.

Christian Atsu – 4

  • This was a disappointing display from Atsu. He gave the ball away far too often and rarely made the right decision. Christian was full of effort but showed very little quality at Molineux.

Andy Carroll – n/a

  • Not on the pitch long enough for a rating. Andy came into an already scrappy game and threw his weight around as you would expect.

Who Was The Man Of The Match In Draw At Wolves?

  • Martin Dubravka (52%, 1,112 )
  • Miguel Almiron (43%, 932 )
  • Matty Longstaff (1%, 27 )
  • Joelinton (1%, 25 )
  • Andy Carroll (1%, 11 )
  • Isaac Hayden (0%, 7 )
  • Jetro Willems (0%, 6 )
  • Ciaran Clark (0%, 6 )
  • Paul Dummett (0%, 4 )
  • Dwight Gayle (0%, 4 )
  • Christian Atsu (0%, 4 )
  • Sean Longstaff (0%, 4 )
  • Federico Fernandez (0%, 3 )
  • Florian Lejeune (0%, 2 )

And there we have it, posters trawling through years of injuries articles to justify having 13 out as if it’s the norm – Bruce’s physical conditioning staff and methods need to be looked at, we’re bringing kids back from loan to make the numbers up for god’s sake.
We’re halfway through the season and just played a lot of games in a short space of time – the players don’t need to train everyday at the moment, it’s important they get rest days for the rest of this month to keep them fit for games

We must sell before we can loan.

Mad frog – well you can bet your life nobody has been bought – doubt we’ll sell anyone though – everyone is injured so selling means we’ll be unlikely to have a bench for games

What?! Excellent Dubravka beating amazing Almiron?

You can’t judge by only watching MOTD…

Mindshaft I wud think Ashley would pay up to improve the S+C side of things. A cheap solution for him but certainly Bruce’s injury history seems poor although we haven’t compared it to prem league or lower level averages? It does seem shocking but the players need to push this too, if they are not happy with what’s going on.

I would strongly suspect that Brucie’s mindset will move from putting a strong team out for the cup replay as he did for the 1st game and keep the core of the regulars back so as not to make the injury situation worse.

I reckon that there’ll be a lot of the fringe players starting including Saivet with youngun’s like Watts and Allan in the team.
Should still be good enough to beat Rochdale but I doubt if there’l be any tears shed by the management if we don’t.

I’m interested to know how bad Joelinton’s alleged groin injury is given how he played through it “for the team” according to the Chron.

Neil- Sorry but Atsu wasn’t full of effort as you say. He barely tried and never made any runs into space. Most of the time just defended or jogged about uninterested. When he had time to make something happen he lost the ball 10 times out 10. A 4 rating is being very generous indeed!

We need to replace him in this window of not definitely in the next window. No where near good enough.

Cyprus it was a tough call, I went for Dubs cos it was his fantastic saves that won us the point but Miggy’s sheer energy and work rate was instrumental in relieving some of the pressure on the defence, so equal billing would be fair.

I think that J’s family must be voting in the poll’s! 🙂

Our position relative to other teams in terms of # of injuries suffered:

2018/19 (total for the entire season): 16/20
    2019/20 (so far): 20/20

    The injuries not the letter.

The letter I thought was very good and well thought out so credit to the Mag for sending it.

I doubt very much if it’ll affect Mikem’s approach to the way he mis’runs the club but we can (as always) live in hope.

    My take on yesterday’s match;

A point beforehand no doubt would’ve been welcomed. However, it was pretty embarrassing to see how happy we were at halftime with it being even

Sure, some will disagree because of injuries but Wolves, who have shown to be one of the top teams in the league, had an off day yesterday. We didn’t even endeavor forward in the second half.

I suppose I can give Bruce a break for waiting so long to bring on Carroll, but we sure could’ve used him sooner, such was Joelintons lack of impact yet again

MOM: tie between Dubravka, who without we would’ve lost, 100%, and Miggy, who had more industry than Jetro, Joelinton and Atsu combined.

Deadbeats; already mentioned Jetro— truly hope there’s an upgrade on him available; Joelinton— so tired of saying this week after week but he will never make it with us. Period. In any poisition. He’s a s*** footballer; Atsu— League One is his level. He showed as much against Rochdale— great first 15 min against a clearly inferior wingback and then put to rest for the remaining 75 min by a decent 17 year old

In short— we better buy this month. In probability— this situation has all the makings of past placations, i.e. Marlon Harewood, Shefki Kuqi, Fernando Ferreya

Oh. Last thing. With our current forwards

I’d take Papiss Cisse back in a heartbeat. Could careless if he’s never learned the offsides rule yet.

I’m sure there wasn’t much truth in the original story, but a 34 year old cisse who is banging them in in Turkey (and, who has managed to score prolifically throughout his career, save his last few seasons with us) has more ability than our current options combined.

If he did come back and had the same start for us as he did then it’d be great but the latter day Cisse wouldn’t be so good.

Cisse is on fire in Turkey. Worth signing. Better than Joelinton. Atsu is a good player but he’s inconsistent. Was our best player against Rochdale. Didn’t release the ball enough yesterday. Keep getting tackled at the crucial stage.
