Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley held their transfer meeting yesterday, in which Steve Bruce reportedly asked the owner for help getting some of his top targets in this month.
One of those is RB Leipzig winger Ademola Lookman who Newcastle are struggling to prise away from the Bundesliga team.
Just yesterday, the club’s managing director Oliver Mitzlaff proclaimed that Lookman would not be loaned out this month.
If Newcastle really want the 22-year-old, they will have to pay at least the £22.5m Leipzig paid for the winger this summer.
That’s where Mike Ashley would come in. The Northern Echo are reporting that a permanent deal for Lookman was proposed by Steve Bruce during yesterday’s meeting.
This seems like it would be a hard sell to us. While Lookman looks the part in terms of the profile for a permanent signing, the £22.5m Leipzig want to recoup for their summer signing is quite a steep one.
It’s more than the £20.5M Newcastle shelled out for Miguel Almiron last January, though that deal too presented a significant risk with Miguel never having played in a top league.
With Almiron having found his groove in front of the net recently as well as Allan Saint-Maximin primed for a return, Mike Ashley may well think a permanent deal for Lookman is unnecessary.
Bruce is bound to be asked about his talks with Ashley during the press conference for the Chelsea match on Saturday. How he responds could be quite revealing as to what to expect this month for permanent singings.

Comment #2Everton are reportedly considering making a bid for Dalian Yifang player Yannick Carrasco
The Belgian winger was a bit of a wash-out at Atletico Madrid before moving to China.
I wonder if this is a sign that , rumours of Wanda withdrawing their support , are true.

Comment #4Bowen has scored 30 plus in two years. Lookman maybe 1. i wanted to get him two years ago after his decent loan but its a worry hes done nothing since. its usually a bad sign when young players are regressing so id be cautious. think hes ok but id value Bowen double lookman.

Comment #5It all sounds perfectly reasonable to me, Jib. Not sure I agree with him that “We have had a fantastic start to the season” – I think it’s been ok so far, could have been better, could have been worse.

I’d agree on some of that but would also say that lookman has played at a higher level than bowen, Leipzig have a seriously good squad, lookman hasn’t cemented a 1st team place but if in championship I’d imagine he’d do well.
I’m torn on lookman, not sure if he adds loads of value but I’d say he’s better than Atsu and still has time to get better

Comment #8if were after a winger the algerian lad at Brentford looks good. my colleague was showing me youtube footage under ‘algerian messi’ and hes very exciting. brentford have a cracking team and stick to an attacking philosophy. their chairman says he plans to get to the top not by pumping his money in but by employing the right managers who play nice football. theyve had several good attacking managers and will probably overtake us soon if we keep getting clowns. if they or leeds fail to go up we should take their manager. likewise whichever premier team goes down we should consider their manager unless its west ham.

Comment #13‘He has been in the game a long time and he played at the very top level in Europe with Manchester United.
“He has won things at the top level.
“He is a really good man and he has this club’s best interests at heart.”
Doesnt say hes a good manager. Just hes a canny bloke, wants the club to win, and won things as a player. id take a horrible bloke who won zero as a player if hed achieved something as a manager or if he was talented like Potter.
im surprised Ritchie (who is trying to get back in the team) didnt say ‘hes a big fat cabbage whose brain has only ever been used for heading balls and he plays the most dire football ive ever seen.’

Comment #19Bowen seems legit, will be a big mistake if we snooze on it and lose out.
An attack of Asm -Miggy-Bowen behind a CF would do nicely and allow us to play more attackingly than this 5 at the back is allowing.

Comment #20For me he’s looking in the wrong area. Put Joelinton wide left and get a striker in. Just looking at the top 4 clubs there are Origi, Gundogan, Iheanacho and Batshuayi who can score and aren’t playing regularly. Go for one of them and forget about getting another winger. We don’t have a striker who can score goals for god’s sake.

Gundogan is a CM, Origi i dont see leaving liverpool, even as a backup he made a big impact last season, in the CL espec so will be content to do the same again and .
The other 2 are fair enough, tho im hoping Big Joe can push on like Miggy has done now he has got a goal. He was getting chances evey game so hopefully he has some confidence now.

Le Mans forward Stephane Diarra will be allowed to leave the club in January with Newcastle interested in signing him, according to the Sunderland Echo.
The club’s chief Thierry Gomez has said he is loathe to lose the striker, but realises he may not have a choice.
“For now, we haven’t received any offer. Stephane also knows where he comes from. If anything were to happen, it would be with our support,” he said.
“The subject isn’t relevant now. We’re entering a month that can bring up a lot of hope but also a lot of danger, so let’s stay focused on the next games, including the one against Caen on Friday night.”

None of them will come or will be available to come in this window, Leicester have used kelechi more often, gundogan (no chance) citeh wont let him go and he’s a midfielder not a cf. Origi is cover for mane, salah, firmino and is hardly a prolific, batshuayi no chance especially seeing as Giroud is off to Inter, chelsea wont have any cover for tammy if he leaves.

Comment #24I really don’t get the big love in for Potter. By a lot of people’s opinion on here we’re the worst team to ever grave the premier league but I believe we’re ahead of Brighton.
They get a lot of plaudits for playing ‘good’ football but as we see time after time, the smaller teams that play ‘good’ football often end up relegated.

The article also doesn’t say he’s a bad manager. Guess having the players behind him is a big tick in the box. Ritchie words today and Joe’s celebration earlier in the week shows the good man management Bruce has which again comes as a surprise to me.
Hull have said Bowen is not going anywhere this window, we keep mentioning him but they’ve got no intention to sell. Cant go and buy someone that isnt for sale

“Le Mans forward Stephane Diarra will be allowed to leave the club in January…”
Remember the last Stéphane that we signed? A certain Monsieur Guivarc’h. Now, I know it’s a tenuous link at best but ‘once bitten…’ I say we should leave all Stéphanes well alone.

Comment #28Bowen is also not signing his new contract. I think that decision will be made by both parties at the end of this season – if Hull are promoted (they’re 6 points off the play-offs) then Bowen will stay. If they aren’t, he’ll be a free agent able to sign wherever he wants, including Newcastle United.

Comment #32Hull are increasingly falling behind the pack. Another loss or two and Hull have little reason to keep him.
Niall Quinn described Bruces style of being a good man manager and having good camaraderie too. Again no mention of tactics. This is 2020 not 1992.
John Reese,
Id have said Burnley were the worst team to watch to grace the premiership. We are worse this year. Sure youve had terrible little teams who barely got any points. But a team playing the way we do on purpose with a decent squad is disgusting. Especially as we will struggle for points too and maybe go down.
