What Does Spinazzola Loan Collapse Mean For Newcastle’s Pursuit Of Lazaro?

There was a report late Thursday that Newcastle were leading the race to sign Inter Milan’s Valentino Lazaro. The twenty-three-year old was reportedly available due to Inter being close to signing two players in Manchester United’s Ashley Young and Roma’s Leonardo Spinazzola.

Ashley Young has completed his move and is now part of Antonio Conte’s squad at Inter.

However, the deal for Leonardo Spinazzola has just collapsed, according to Sky Sports Italia. This may now give Conte pause to let Lazaro leave on loan this month.

The Spinazzola deal to Inter was basically a player swap with Matteo Politano going in the opposite direction. They both would be loans until the end of the season with a €25m obligation to purchase in the summer.

However, Inter have haggled a bit on the original agreement, and despite both players passing medicals, they have now returned to their respective clubs.

The report in Sports Italia now claims that Conte may hold onto Lazaro unless they can bring in another player. However, there is a glaring problem with this scenario.

Leonardo Spinazzola is a left-back while Valentino Lazaro is a right wing-back/winger. Matteo Politano is also a right-winger, so it hardly makes sense that this swap deal collapsing would have any effect on Lazaro’s availability.

Lazaro is still behind Antonio Candreva, who is Inter Milan’s primary starter on the right side of midfield. So hopefully, Lazaro is still available to bring in on loan this month.

The report does go on to say that Newcastle have made the best offer for the 23-year-old. However, they also claim that Red Bull Leipzig have come into the picture.

Leipzig have been trying to get Monaco’s German right-back Benjamin Henrichs in this month but have not made much progress on that front and may have now turned their attention to Lazaro.

Newcastle are also reportedly preparing a bid for Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen soon. We’re not sure if Bruce would pursue both Bowen and Lazaro, with them being right-sided players and neither being a striker.

However, it would make sense in that both are very different type players that would add a lot of quality to this squad.

Guardian ( I know they just make it up) has us in a 32212 formation, and really it looks pretty good, apart from perhaps Krafth, who I think is fine as a conventional right back, but not so great at wing back.

Anyhoo, we get the wing backs forward, press a little earlier and it looks like it could do the job v Chelsea.

    ………………….Dubravka..
    ……….Fede….Lascelles..Lejeune..
    Krafth…………………………………….Ritchie.
    ……………Hayden…S Longstaff.
    ……………………Almiron.
    ………………St Max……Joel.

Has a bit more pace, athleticism, and running about it, particularly through the spine of the side, where we sometimes lack it a little.

would you tell them to surrender possesion and park the bus?
maybe against Chelsea thats ok, but against smaller teams we should be trying to slaughter them.

TnMW @9: Chelsea is really not that good particularly in defence. If we have an aggressive setup – with Ritchie being available – the game is winnable.

I think that too unused. for starters Chelsea would be taken by surprise. secondly theyll have the wrong set up to deal with us attacking. thirdly it would be a confidence booster for out players to be told to play, especially the attackers. theyd want to show they are good enough to be trusted to play. when they are told to cede possesion what theyre hearing is youre not good enough, youre not as good as sheff utd so you need to use dirty tactics. this is fine if you have crap players, they wont be offended. but we have good players. we can do much better.

On the Bowen story that MA has sanctioned the purchase, maybe true maybe not.

Hull City have signed Mallik Wilks on loan until the end of the season, with the option to make the deal permanent.

The 21-year-old, who can play as a winger or striker, is this Hull saying we now have cover and if the right bid comes in, we would sell?

I think Mikeys doing a good job here. Smart negotiator Froggy. We don’t get taken for mugs and we generally (besides Joel) get value. I think we can trust Mikey here but like him I wouldn’t waste money unless he can spin a few bucks down the line. He is an excellent man to look after our money 22 and its good to have his prudence. We may not be minted but Mike is safe for us and you should value his financial rectitude.

It’s going to be very interesting how Ritchie fits back in to the team. I think he was only ever deployed as a LWB out of necessity and the owners parsimony. He was definitely earmarked for a contract extension by our former manager so he must have featured in his plans and I doubt it was to continue as a LWB. I wonder if the plan was to switch to two wingers or whether he was just going to be a valuable squad player. We’ll never know, as it stands if Willems is going to occupy the LWB then Ritchie has to take ASM place or sit on the bench.

If we play the same system as against ManCity and the same tactics we may unsettle Chelseas backline today. Stifle possession and pass forward quickly, play the game as far away from our goal as possible and frustrate their forwards.

My only questions on player selection would be, is Hayden and Maximin able to start? Can Ritchie and Krafth cope defending against Odio or Williams pace?

    Joelinton
    Atsu—S.Longstaff—M.Longstaff—Almiron
    Ritchie–Lejuene–Lascelles–Fernandez–Hayden

Having watched a lot of Bowen recently at first I wasn’t convinced certainly not as a winger. The more I watch him the more I think he could become the next Jamie Vardy (with less pace). He has finishing instincts of a striker and gets in all the positions you would want with the same tenacity as Vardy.

Not sure he would work up top on his own though and would be very good in a 2 man striker formation playing from the right side.

When we last played Chelsea at SJP
    1- 2
Sarri was still their manager and it was only our 3rd game of the season
    the team was
    Dubravka
    Yedlin Fernandez Clark Schär Dummett
    Ritchie Diame Ki Murphy
    Rondon
Chelsea got a very dodgy penalty from a Schar tackle
Joselu scored a fine header late on
    We only had 18% possession
Rafa said when asked about this
    .

“I remember a long time ago, I don’t know if it was Guardiola at Barcelona, but they played against Celtic and they had 80% against 20% and they lost 2-0, so possession now is just for the TV, for the stats.
If you create five chances like yesterday, which Wolves did against Manchester City was an amazing game and they had 71% of possession, so possession means nothing.”

    Nufc-83,
You’re talking about turning a winger in to a clinical finisher who is relying on the nous of his manager to get the team in sync to provide those chances. Graeme Potter was brought in to Brighton because the owners didn’t like CH’s football and the annual flirtation with relegation. He is getting plaudits for altering their style of play. We have a manager with grand ideas of front foot football but with no clue of how to implement it. How on earth do you expect him to turn a winger in to Jamie Vardy.

Jail have you seen Bowen play? The whole point of the post was to say he has more qualities that would suit him playing as a striker than he has a winger. I don’t think playing out wide he would be that good of a player in the prem. There is no turning the player into a clinical finisher required he already has that in his locker (+his movement in the box, his tenacity etc).
