Newcastle got a massive three points on a late Isaac Hayden header deep into stoppage time. We defended for much of the second half but were again able to get a late goal to turn a draw into three points
The team came out unchanged after a scoreless first-half. The second half started a bit more open with Chelsea having several counter-attacks, but Newcastle were able to get players back to handle the threats.
Neither side could create anything of quality in the first 20 minutes of the half, but Chelsea started to ask questions at about the 65-minute mark.
Steve Bruce made his first change bringing Emil Krafth off for Sean Longstaff in the 70th minute. Hayden moved to right wing-back.
Right after the change, Chelsea almost created a great chance with a number of passes that sent Tammy Abraham through on Dubravka. However, the striker couldn’t get a shot on target as he tried to round Dubravka.
Abraham got another chance in the 79th minute as a Cesar Azpilicueta header had him clear on Dubravak again, but the Slovakian got a slight touch on the ball. However, it was still goalbound when Matt Ritchie was able to get back and clear it.
Chelsea were in total control at this point as Steve Bruce brought off Jonjo Shelvey for Matty Longstaff in the 84th minute.
The lads were knackered but kept defending to keep Chelsea at bay. If anyone was going to score it looked a certainty to be the visitors.
Then when it seemed like we had gotten a decent point, Newcastle won a late corner. After Ritchie’s delivery was handled by Chelsea, Allan Saint-Maximin gathered the ball and launched a cross into the box.
Isaac Hayden got on the end of it and Kepa Arrizabalaga couldn’t keep it out. Newcastle get a massive win and have moved into 12th in the table on 29 points.

Comment #5There seems such a great spirit between the coaching staff and the players. Hayden again running to celebrate with Bruce before the restart. The never say die attitude is superb as well. They absolutely never give up. Got to love that aspect, even if you disagree with the football.
Need to make sure signings fit the same mould.

Comment #9Always good to see us winning. Victory a bit in Rafa’s style – first of all don’t concede and than try to sneak win in late game. Success 🙂 Congrats to Hayden and what a cross from ASM!

Comment #12Very important 3 points. Our defensive play was outstanding, Chelsea has a lot of the ball but are only able to create 3 good opportunities all game. We defended the set pieces great too. Hoping for a couple of signings which will make us better offensively.

Comment #14Lots of people predicted 0 points from the next 4 games after Everton. 4 out of 9, is looking a good return with probably the easisest of the 4 (on paper) to come.

Comment #15Tbf honest assessment from bruce in his interview, talking about next steps to progress which is possession by adding quality. Players are used to playing in a defensive system and it’s working for them. We tried to change it and it didnt work so it’ll take time.

Comment #19I only watched the 2nd half, but I thought we were outstanding, we are never going to go toe to toe with them, but having said that, I did not think Chelsea were any good today, if you want a lesson on how to keep the ball and pass it side ways, that was as good as you will see,
We only really let them shoot from distance, only 4 on target out of 19, which is what you want to see.
Don’t think Krafth is anywhere near good enough, the scouting of this summers has been a real mixed bag, willems and ASM where ok, big questions on Joe, hopefully will come good, but 40 mill, hmm
Well done NUFC

Positives… Spirit..Almiron work rate..SM ball for goal brilliant…Lascelles and now Ritchie back massive plus points..missed that leadership
Negatives…Krafth is below sub standard..very poor footballer…Fernandez yet again a liability..ball watches..too slow and poor passing…needs to be replaced asap

Is it not that we performed so well defensively that stopped them creating better chances. We stifled them, and worked hard as a unit to shut down space and openings for them.
We stopped them being at their best, not thwm underperforming.

Comment #28Jester Jib (the Blog Fool). No twisty face from me. Terrific result. Although it is the greatest highway robbery I have ever seen on a football pitch. Dick Turpin would have been proud of what happened today.
Chelsea have themselves to blame for not putting the ball in the net and Hayden 10 out of 10 for a non stop performance.
Noted a couple said the first half was a decent game – clearly amatoooooors of the game.

Comment #29Great result! I would never have guessed that result.
Would be nice to see us with a bit more confidence on the ball. Giving it away way to easy and the matches become boring to watch. I don’t think it is all about player quality, though. Seems to be a mental thing.

Comment #32Well deserved after dominating the game for 15 seconds in the end. Brilliant attacking display for at least 30 seconds.
Chelsea as per usual lucky to hold on for such a long time. Would have been a travesty if they got away with a point.
Justice at last.

Comment #33Delighted, obviously. However- I still think Hayden was the worst player on the pitch today, both he and Shelvey were atrocious.
Ciaran Clark man of the match for me.

Comment #34Lascelles and Clark were outstanding, for me, Clark edges it today, but hairs breadth splitting them so who cares!!
Pound for pound, Clark looks more and more like one of Rafa’s best pound for pound signings. Considering the majority of fans were underwhelmed when he signed (myself included), and we talk of selling him most summers, he really has played himself into a key component of this team.
Almiron worked hard, and supported the defence throughout, and Joe had one of his better games, probably his best when playing as a lone out and out striker.
