Who Was Newcastle’s Man Of The Match In Win Against Chelsea?

Newcastle have again grabbed a late winner to claim victory after struggling for much of the match. This time it was Isaac Hayden with a header deep into stoppage time to get three points against Chelsea.

Hayden had moved to right wing-back when Emil Krafth came off in the 70th minute but got into the box on the late corner. Isaac has been so versatile over the past few weeks covering for our injured center-backs and right-backs.

The defenders today were outstanding especially our back three of Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez, and Ciaran Clark. They were at times an impenetrable force that Chelsea struggled all game to break down.

When the Blues were able to get the odd chance, Martin Dubravka was there steady as ever to make the save.

Joelinton had one of his best games in a Newcastle shirt today. His holdup play was outstanding. The Brazilian came so close to getting a goal with his first-half header off the crossbar.

Allan Saint-Maximin also put in a committed display and came through with the assist on Hayden’s winner. We were a bit surprised Bruce left him out for 90 minutes but he’s come away unscathed.

Miguel Almiron was superb again. The Paraguayan was all over the pitch today and totally committed to the cause.

Toon played their get out of jail card tonight, yet for all of Chelsea’s possession never really created a clear cut chance.
    Lascalles and Clark were outstanding
but I gave my man of the match to JoeLinton, ploughed a loan furrow up front, hit the bar and won most headers and hold up play was good
Also kept on battling and won the corner that led to the goal.
    Merit marks
Dubravka 7 – had a easy-ish afternoon due to his defenders excellent defending and when or back four were breached he was there to save
Willems – not on long enough
Clark 8- probably his best game on a Toon shirt – solid performance headed kicked every ball away
Lascalles 8 – captains display – marshalled his back four again defended as if his life depended on him
Fernandez 7 – defended well but his passing was poor gifting Chelsea the ball to many time’s
Kraft 5 – weakest link at the back never got near Willems but give him his due stuck to his task
Hayden 7 – right place at right time but looked tired in midfield until went to full back where he looked more comfortable.
Shelvey 7- mixed bag some good some bad but looked like he was carrying a injury
Almiron 8 – puts in a shift – better defending than attacking today but that was due to Chelsea pushing their full-backs up denying him any room
Saint Max 6 – great cross for goal but like Almiron was denied space by Chelsea pushing up on him – tired near end – still got a game under his belt
JoeLinton 8 – my man of my match just – for his hold up battling display – up against two defenders all game. Won most duels and his hold up play bringing other players into the game was good. His never give up attitude led to the corner and the goal. Needs someone to get near him to help him
    Subs
Ritchie 6 – did ok – did not have his passing radar on today but defended well in Willems position
Sean Longstaffe 5- did ok strengthen midfield at end when getting overrun
Matty Longstaffe – not on long enough
Crowd – more noisy than usual
Bruce 7 – thought we would get overrun midfield which we did at times but fair play to him we got the job done

Who doesn’t love a last minute winner?

Saw some decent touches and interplay under pressure which we don’t see enough of, definitely need to see more of it.

Enjoyed most of the game, some dull parts but the ref was terrible first half and not much better second.

Great 3 points, as much of the ball as Chelsea had they barely threatened.

Wonder how overwhelmingly in favour of Joelinton this vote would go if it had went in off the woodwork? Clark mom for me, but could easily have been Joelinton or Lascelles. Toughest vote for me this season.

What a result that was, never expected it at all,i feared the opposite would happen.
We fought really well in defence and i thought for that alone we deserved a point.
To get 3 is most wellcome, its normally the opposition get late goals and sicken the fans.
Well done Cabbage heed, keep it going, haha

Yes Bill I was there. Charlie’s review spot on Lascelles and Clark great. I too Thought Joel had a good game. Honestly he fought for every ball. The second half was backs to the wall, but like I posted noway did Chelsea deserve to win couldn’t take the chances they had. Soo pleased we won.

    Our lass is a legend.
    ?
Thought her record might go today but she came through unscathed again.
Wtf is wrong with some you on here? This is how we play, have you not worked it out yet? We let teams try and break US down and hit back on the break. We’re simply not good enough to go toe to toe with most teams, but it’s, still exciting stuff. Defending is an art itself.
There was nowt wrong with the atmosphere either.
Bruce deserves huge credit for where we are in the league considering what he’s, got to work with. He’s one of us ffs, give him a break.
Nobody wanted him – me included – but despite that he’s worked wonders. Rafa’s gone. He’s unlikely to come back and it’s time people moved on. Great effort from the lads again and on chances created, maybe a draw would have been fair but who gives a toss? We won again against a top top team who couldn’t break us down.
Had to cancel my night out cos I did my back in getting out the car but I’m still happier than some on here. HOWAY THE LADS!!!!

Lilo, she’s been to four home games and three away so far I think. No losses, no goals against. Its bizarre. 😀

I’d say Joelintons performance just goes to show how much a single goal, doesn’t matter against which opposition, can make a difference to a players confidence. Looked that bit stronger and sharper. Hopefully he can keep it going and start to play like that more consistently. His header off the bar also showed if we give him good service in the box he could be dangerous.

Hats off to the team and Bruce, the team for sticking in and holding Chelsea at bay and nicking a winner also Bruce for delivering good management with the team we have. A weaker squad than Rafa had last season and out performing him.
    Well done!

The counterattacking game will continue to suit us for a while, but we surely won’t continue to drop off quite so far if we add a couple of more attacking players to the mix, and we do need to transition from defense to attack more quickly when we win the ball back, and we do need one of our central midfield to get forward to support Joelinton or Carroll better than we presently do.

Schar and Lejeune pinging long cross field balls to fast breaking wingbacks, and Hayden and Sean Longstaff busting their nuts in the centre of the park was how Rafa addressed this last term.

Press a little earlier, get the wingbacks on the ball in the final third quicker and more often, and get more support to the target man. That surely is where we go first from here, and the sooner we get a couple in to help us do it the better.

Confuses me that so many are now praising Joelinton whe he played the same way he has done most of the time for us, battled hard but was isolated.. But before everyone was saying he is terrible and today he was great… Would they be saying that if Chelsea snatched the late winner?

Just so it’s clear I’ve always thought Joelinton has done okay with the little he has to work with on top of the fact he isn’t a striker

Gutted for Willems, he’s been a revelation for us this season. I’d still sign him if he doesn’t play again all season, he’s earned a contract assuming he comes back from this injury.
The team spirit is fantastic when it could so easily have gone the other way.
This time last season we were 17th. Bruce will never be as good a manager as Rafa, but he’s doing the best he can and frankly, as disappointed as I was when we signed him, he’s, rammed my words down my throat and I couldn’t be happier for him. He’s a likeable guy who took his dream job and is making the most of it.
Remember, we were odds on to finish BOTTOM in August. Does that not deserve some credit? We’ve got a Geordie manager and four Geordies playing regularly. What’s not to like?
